INTRODUCTION:The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of voice therapy (VT) to management of patients following surgery for vocal fold polyps. METHODS:In this prospective study, two groups were created by randomizing patients diagnosed with vocal fold polyps. Group 1 received only phonosurgery, and group 2 received phonosurgery followed by VT. Subjective test methods conducted before and after treatment were evaluated comparatively. Videolaryngostroboscopy, the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10), and voice analysis parameters, including fundamental frequency variation (vF0), jitter percent (Jitt%), shimmer percent (Shim%), noise-to-harmonic ratio, and maximum phonation time (MPT), were compared before and after treatment. RESULTS:The data of 40 patients, 15 (37.5%) women and 25 (62.5%) men, were examined in this study. Significant reductions were observed in the pre- and post-treatment values in the Voice Handicap Index-10 and GRBAS scale (p < 0.001). In terms of aerodynamic analysis, a decrease was observed in the S/Z ratio in both groups after treatment. Regarding MPT, a statistically significant increase was observed following treatment in (1) both groups (p < 0.001) and (2) group 2 versus group 1 (p < 0.001). In terms of acoustic voice analysis, both groups showed an increase in fundamental frequency (F0) and a statistically significant decrease in jitter and shimmer values. When comparing these parameter changes, it was observed that group 2 had a statistically significant difference compared to group 1 (F0: p = 0.082; Jitt: p = 0.014; Shim: p = 0.035, respectively). CONCLUSION:In this study comparing the outcomes of vocal fold polyp treatment using only surgery versus surgery combined with VT, it was found that the addition of VT to endolaryngeal phonosurgery provided a significant positive contribution.
Objective: To investigate the association between clinical factors and post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) including rebleeding episodes. Methods: The medical records of 1,082 patients who underwent tonsillectomy between May 2018 and April 2019 were reviewed. The entire study cohort included 431 (39.7%) children aged less than six years and 292 (26.9%) adults older than 15 years. Data on patient demographics, surgical indication, dissection technique, tonsils’ grade, postoperative analgesia, surgeon’s experience, the season of surgery, management of hemorrhage, length of hospital stay, and rebleeding episode were noted. Results: Postoperative hemorrhage occurred in 87 cases (8.0%) including 32 children (4.0% of children) and 55 adults (18.8% of adults). Age, surgical indication, tonsils’ grade, and postoperative use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were risk factors found to be statistically significant for PTH in univariate analysis (p<0.05). Multivariable analyses identified patients older than 15 years and those who received postoperative NSAIDs to be risk factors of PTH [Odds ratio (OR): 15.5, 95% confidence interval (CI): 7.68-31.27, p<0.001, OR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.11-0.44, p<0.001, respectively]. About one out of every 60 (1.5%) children had severe oropharyngeal bleeding, whereas every 12th (8.2%) patient of those aged >15 years had severe hemorrhages that warranted surgical hemostasis in the operating room (p<0.001). Conclusion: The risk of bleeding after tonsillectomy was significantly higher in adults and users of NSAIDs postoperatively. Also, the evidence of minor bleeding increased the risk of a second bleeding episode in adulthood.
In adults, the glottis is the narrowest part of the larynx, whereas, in newborns, it is the subglottic region. The subglottic region has a diameter of around 4–5 mm in infants and 3 mm in premature infants. It is crucial to acknowledge that even a 1 mm circumference swelling or edema in the subglottic area of an infant can lead to a substantial 60% obstruction of the airway. Therefore, the treatment of airway issues in pediatric patients may require more immediate and complex interventions compared to adults (Marston AP et al., Clin Perinatol. 2018;45:787–804).
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) is a rapid loss of hearing, exceeding 30 dB in at least 3 consecutive frequencies within 3 days, without any identifiable cause despite thorough investigations. Currently, the etiology and pathogenesis of ISSHL have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to assess the size of the cochlear nerve in patients with ISSHL and explore its relationship with pretreatment audiograms and treatment response. Subjects and. METHODS:A total of 125 patients (59 [47.2%] women; mean age 47.7±13.8 years [minimum-maximum: 21-76]) and 60 healthy participants (27 [45%] women; mean age 45.7±16.8 years [minimum-maximum: 20-76]) as a control group were included in this study. The size of the cochlear nerve was assessed on the affected side, compared to the control group, as well as on the unaffected side. Pretreatment and posttreatment audiological values were also analyzed. RESULTS:The cross-sectional area (CSA), vertical diameter (VD), and horizontal diameter (HD) of the CN were found to be smaller on the affected side of ISSHL patients compared to the control group (p<0.01; p=0.04; p=0.02, respectively). In the study group (affected side of ISSHL patients), there were no significant differences in VD, HD, and CSA values between pretreatment audiogram types (p=0.23; p=0.53; p=0.39, respectively), and initial hearing levels (p=0.16; p=0.22; p=0.23, respectively). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in VD, HD, and CSA values between the recovery groups according to Furuhashi criteria (p=0.18; p=0.37; p=0.27, respectively). CONCLUSIONS:The size of the CN may be a risk factor for ISSHL, but it does not affect the type of audiogram curves and was not prognostic in terms of treatment response.
Objetivo: Comparar e investigar los parámetros de la tomografía de coherencia óptica (OCT) de los lados sanos y afectados de pacientes con pérdida auditiva neurosensorial súbita idiopática (PANSI). Método: La evaluación ocular bilateral de los pacientes diagnosticados con PANSI se realizó con OCT. Se registraron los valores de espesor del complejo de células ganglionares (CCG) y de la capa de fibras nerviosas de la retina (CFNR), y se examinaron las diferencias entre los dos ojos. Resultados: Se evaluaron 39 pacientes, con una edad media de 44.82 ± 14.90 años. Se determinó que el grosor de la CFNR de los ojos era una media de 89.87 ± 3.65 μm en el lado afectado y 103.87 ± 3.98 μm en el lado de control sano (p = 0.0001). Se determinó que el CCG medio era 90.46 ± 3.49 μm en el lado afectado y 103.77 ± 3.96 μm en el lado de control sano (p = 0.0001). Conclusiones: Se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los ojos sanos y afectados de pacientes con PANSI con respecto al CCG medio y al espesor medio de la CFNR. La OCT podría ser una técnica útil para medir esta degeneración neuronal.
Objectives: This study aims to investigate whether the middle ear resonance frequency (RF) is affected in acromegaly, which causes growth in the skull bone. Methods: Thirty acromegaly patients and 38 volunteers were included in the study. Pure tone average scores and middle ear RF values of the groups that underwent pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, and multifrequency tympanometry tests were compared. Results: The pure tone mean was 14.95 +/- 12.13 in acromegaly patients and 5.70 +/- 8.52 in the control group (p:0.18). Sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL) was observed in 16.6% of the patients. The average middle ear RF was calculated as 815 +/- 179.05 Hz in patients with acromegaly and 773 +/- 127.15 in the control group. ( p = 0.0001). Conclusion: This study is the first to evaluate middle -ear RF in acromegaly patients. Acromegaly-induced changes in soft tissues and bone structures impact middle ear functions. In this patient group, we found an increase in middle ear RF without conductive -type hearing loss and a 16.6% rate of SNHL.
OBJECTIVE:The objective of the study is to compare the optic coherence tomography (OCT) parameters of the healthy and affected sides of patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) and to investigate the relationships between these and the improvement in hearing levels. METHODS:A bilateral eye evaluation of patients diagnosed with ISSNHL was performed with OCT. The ganglion cell complex (GCC) and retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness values were recorded and the differences between the two eyes were examined. RESULTS:An evaluation was made of 39 patients with a mean age of 44.82 ± 14.90 years. The RNFL thickness of the eyes was determined to be mean 89.87 ± 3.65 µm on the affected side and 103.87 ± 3.98 µm on the healthy control side (p = 0.0001). The mean GCC was determined to be mean 90.46 ± 3.49 µm on the affected side and 103.77 ± 3.96 µm on the healthy control side (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS:A statistically significant difference was observed between the healthy and affected eyes of patients with ISSNHL with respect to mean GCC and mean RNFL thickness. OCT could be a useful technique for measuring this neural degeneration.
Besides the variations in genomic DNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are also responsible for many diseases, including cancer. MtDNA among individuals from the same and different ethnic groups is highly polymorphic. In the present study, we screened mitochondrial CO-1 and ND4 gene sequences of Turkish head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patient group and examined the possible relationship between CO-1 and ND4 gene mutations and the development of the disease. Sixty unrelated Turkish HNSCC patients and thirty six unrelated healthy volunteers from different geographic regions of Turkey were included in this study. Total DNA isolation from blood samples were carried out and amplification of CO-1 and ND4 gene regions of mtDNA were performed by PCR reaction. PCR products were purified and sequencing was carried out by Sanger sequencing. Two mutations in CO-1 gene were identified and among them A6272d mutation was found as statistically significant in the studied HNSCC patient group with respect to control group (p 0.05). Also differences in the alpha helix structure of the protein in patients with mutations were observed. Two mutations (A11251G and T11017TA) in the ND4 gene region were identified, however, none of these mutations were seem to be responsible for the disease development (p 0.05). However, we cannot detect a statistically significant alteration between patient and control groups for ND4 gene (p 0.05). These differences can be due to ethnic differences.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the expression of estrogen receptor beta 2 receptor in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas and its relationship with lymph node metastasis. Methods: Histopathological specimens of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent laryngectomy and neck dissection were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of lymph node metastasis. Estrogen receptor beta 2, Ki-67, and p53 antibodies were studied by immunohistochemical methods in the tumoral and non-tumoral tissue specimens. The evaluation of immunohistochemical staining pattern was evaluated with Allred scores. The difference between tumoral and non-tumoral tissues of estrogen receptor beta 2 Allred scores and the relationship of lymph node metastasis with Allred scores of estrogen receptor beta 2 were examined and correlated with Ki-67 and p53 expression. Results: This study included 26 patients in lymph node metastasis (+) group and 46 patients in lymph node metastasis (−) with a total number of 72 patients. There was a significantly higher estrogen receptor beta 2 Allred score of tumoral tissue with respect to non-tumoral tissue (P < .001). Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship between lymph node metastasis (+) group and lymph node metastasis (−) group according to tumoral tissue ERβ2 Allred score (P=.092). This study aimed to analyze laboratory and radiological imaging results in the prediction of treatment strategy in patients with deep neck infections. Eighty-three patients (55 (66.3%) men, mean age: 38.2±14.5 years) were included in the study. Patients were divided into three groups according to the treatment strategy: group 1 received only antibiotic treatment, group 2 underwent abscess drainage with needle puncture in addition to antibiotic treatment, and group 3 underwent surgical drainage with antibiotic treatment. Laboratory outcomes, imaging methods, duration of hospital stay, treatment strategy, and clinical outcomes were analyzed.According to the laboratory results, complete blood count values did not vary among the three groups, but C reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values were higher in group 3 (p<0.01). Based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the cut-off levels for CRP and ESR associated with the need for surgical drainage were 133 mg/L and 42.5, respectively. According to radiological imaging results, the number of involved neck spaces was significantly different among the three groups (p=0.03), and group 3 had more spaces involved when compared with groups 1 and 2 (p=0.04). Gas formation in the neck tissues was noted in 10 patients in group 3 and 5 patients in groups 1 and 2 (p=0.02). ESR and CRP levels were higher in patients who underwent surgical drainage. In patients with deep neck space infections, the involvement of two or more neck spaces and gas formation on radiological images might indicate surgical drainage as a treatment strategy.
Objective: To reveal the incidence and predictive parameters of occult cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with cN0 laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC) who underwent surgery as definitive treatment. Methods: Patients with cN0 laryngeal cancer who had undergone elective neck dissection together with partial or total laryngectomy between January 2006 and November 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical and histopathologic predictors of occult metastasis were also analyzed. Follow-up data were used to obtain recurrence and survival analysis. Results: A total of 86 patients with a mean age of 62.5 years were included in the study. Occult LNM was detected in 15 (17.4%) patients. Tumor grade, pT stage, thyroid cartilage invasion, and extralaryngeal extension were found to predict occult neck metastasis in univariate analysis. The mean follow-up time was 60.7 months and in the survival/recurrence analysis, pT stage, tumor location, tumor grade, presence of occult metastasis, pre-epiglottic space involvement. and extralaryngeal extension were found to predict poorer outcome. Conclusion: Overall occult LNM is low (17.4%) in N0 laryngeal cancer, but the presence of LNM is a poor prognostic factor. Correct determination of the neck status and proper treatment is crucial. The incidence of LNM is very low in T1–T2 stages and well-differentiated tumors. The “wait and see” strategy may be applied in T1–T2 cases as well as selected T3 cases with well-differentiated tumors.
Background Dysphagia is a geriatric syndrome. Changes in the whole body that occur with aging also affect swallowing functions and cause presbyphagia. This condition may progress to oropharyngeal and/or esophageal dysphagia in the presence of secondary causes that increase in incidence with aging. However, no study has been published that provides recommendations for use in clinical practice that addresses in detail all aspects of the management of dysphagia in geriatric individuals. This study aimed to answer almost all potential questions and problems in the management of geriatric dysphagia in clinical practice. Methods A multidisciplinary team created this recommendation guide using the seven-step and three-round modified Delphi method via e-mail. The study included 39 experts from 29 centers in 14 cities. Results Based on the 5W and 1H method, we developed 216 detailed recommendations for older adults from the perspective of different disciplines dealing with older people. Conclusion This consensus-based recommendation is a useful guide to address practical clinical questions in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and follow-up for the management of geriatric dysphagia and also contains detailed commentary on these issues.
Objective: To investigate the prognostic value of the magnetic resonance imaging in Bell's palsy patients. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed and treated with Bell's palsy between October 2013 and March 2016 retrospectively selected. House-Brackmann grades, pre-and post-treatment pure tone audiograms, stapedial reflexes were analyzed and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans with gadolinium-based contrast agents were evaluated. Contrast-enhanced segments of the facial nerve were determined. MRI findings were compared statistically with pre-and post-treatment grade, recurrence rate of Bell's palsy, MRI scanning timing, presence of stapes reflexes and posttreatment recovery data. Results: No significant correlation was observed between pretreatment House-Brackmann grades and enhancement (p>0.05). Similarly, there was no significant correlation between clinical recovery and enhancement (p>0.05). Also, no significant correlation was observed between MRI scanning time, the recurrence rate of Bell's palsy and MRI findings (p>0.05). None of the MRIs showed neoplastic contrast enhancement. Conclusion: The routine use of the contrast-enhanced temporal MRI is not recommended in the diagnosis and monitoring of Bell's palsy patients, because the contrast enhancement pattern of the facial nerve has no effect on the prognosis of Bell's palsy. MRI should be used in cases that do not heal despite treatment, for the differential diagnosis of facial nerve tumors and in patients who are candidates for surgical decompression.
Introduction:. The gap junction beta 6 (GJB6) gene encodes connexin 30. This protein plays critical role in tissues and is responsible for the formation of gap junctions, which have a wide variety of physiological functions. Disease-associated variants of GJB6 cause non-syndromic hearing loss (HL) and skin lesions. We herein describe a Turkish girl who was diagnosed with HL and in whom genetic analysis revealed a causal variant of GJB6. Case presentation:. The 1-year-old girl patient was diagnosed with bilateral HL when she was 1 month old. Apart from this, the patient’s motor/mental development and physical examination were normal. As a result of the analysis with the multi-gene panel, the causative genomic change, c.175G>A(p.Gly59Arg) in the GJB6 gene was determined as heterozygous. Segregation analysis proved the same genotype in the patient’s mother and grandfather. The patient’s mother and grandfather had bilateral HL and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis phenotype. The patient was diagnosed with Clouston syndrome, and genetic counseling was provided to her family. Discussion:. Causal variants of GJB6 cause skin manifestations and signs of HL. Molecular diagnosis of these patients is a valuable tool for clinicians in reaching their optimal treatment and clinical management. Conclusion:. In syndromic cases in which many organs are affected, the determination of the causative gene is important in directing the patients to appropriate observation, screening, and treatment strategies.
Background. To date, studies have mostly focused on the language outcome of early-auditory interventions including amplification for congenital hearing loss within the first 6 months. We aimed to examine the effect of early-auditory intervention in patients with congenital hearing loss on cognitive, motor and language outcomes, and determine the clinical variables that affect developmental outcomes. Methods. The medical records of 104 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Children were evaluated by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition. Results. The median ages of confirmation of hearing loss, amplification, starting auditory-verbal intervention and cochlear implantation were 9, 10, 13 and 19 months, respectively. Of the patients, 26% received a hearingaid fitting ≤6 months of age. Fifty-one children (49%) had additional disabilities. The median cognitive, language and motor scores of children with no additional disabilities were 95 (65-115), 68 (47-103) and 97 (58- 130), respectively and children with early-auditory intervention (≤6 months) demonstrated higher cognitive, receptive and expressive language subscale scores than late-auditory intervention group (p < 0.05) whereas there was no significant difference in motor scores (p > 0.05). A significant negative correlation was found between additional disability and cognitive, language and motor outcomes (r=-0.78, r=-0.54 and r=-0.75, respectively p < 0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between language outcomes and the degree of hearing loss (r=-0.20, p < 0.05). Multiple regression analyses revealed that additional disability and early-auditory intervention showed a significant amount of variance in cognitive and language scores. The early intervention did not make a significant, independent contribution on motor outcomes whereas additional disability did. Conclusions. Presence of additional disability was the strongest significant variable on developmental outcomes in hearing-impaired children. In children with no additional disability, significantly better cognitive and language scores were associated with the early-auditory intervention. Motor skills were not affected by the early-auditory intervention.
Objectives: To use multifrequency multicomponent tympanometry (MF-MCT) for evaluating the middle ear mechano-acoustics of children with a history of ventilation tube (VT) insertion and to determine the effects of tube insertion sequelae on middle ear function. Methods: A prospective case-control study in a tertiary referral center involving 26 children (51 ears) aged 3-15 years. The children had undergone VT insertion surgery at least one-year previously and had no other known ear diseases. In addition, 13 age-matched healthy controls (26 ears) with no prior history of ear disease were included. The patients and control subjects underwent an otoscopic examination, standard 226 Hz tympanometry, and MF-MCT. Results: In 13.7% of cases, the VT was still in place in the operated ears. Post-operative myringosclerosis and/or eardrum retraction were noticed in 30% of ears with intact tympanic membranes in the patient group. While patients exhibited a great variability of tympanometric types (with standard 226 Hz tympanometry and tympanometric patterns with 1000 Hz MF-MCT), all cases in the control group had type A tympanograms and 3B1G patterns. Conclusion: The effects of VT treatment on the mechano-acoustics of the middle ear have been revealed in this study. It has also been determined that VT application may increase the mass effect on the middle ear functions, which can be detected in the tympanometric shape and pattern.
Introduction: Tegmen defect (TD) has a potential of intracranial spread of middle ear infection, meningoencephalic herniation (MEH), and cerebrospinal fluid leakage (CSFL). Especially the defects >1 cm with MEH or CSFL are generally repaired via the classical middle fossa or minicraniotomy technique. The aim of this study was to show the efficiency of the intracranial, extradural placement of the septal cartilage graft in the closure of the TD larger than 1 cm via the transmastoid (TM) approach. Methods: The demographic, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data of 11 patients with chronic otitis media (COM) who had TD larger than 1 cm were reviewed retrospectively. Hospitalization time and hearing preservation with respect to MEH or CSFL were analyzed. Results: The most common etiology of TD was cholesteatoma (82%), and 91% of the patients had multiple COM surgery history. The mean TD size was 15.4 (10–25) mm. Fifty-five percent of the patients presented with either MEH or CSFL. The mean follow-up of the patients was 22.5 (8–42) months. There was no significant difference between preoperative and postoperative mean bone conduction thresholds. Mean hospitalization time was 5.2 (3–10) days. There was no significant difference in the hospitalization time between patients with MEH or CSFL and without MEH or CSFL. Neither recurrence nor graft infection was encountered. Conclusion: Extradural grafting with the septal cartilage in the large TD up to 25 mm can be repaired efficiently via the TM approach without application of a lumbar drainage.
Idiopathic subjective tinnitus has a complex pathophysiology in which not only cochlear and central classical auditory pathways but also nonclassical auditory pathways of different parts of the brain are involved. Vestibuloocular and vestibulocollic pathways are the central projections of utricle and saccule used in the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test. Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of idiopathic subjective tinnitus on vestibuloocular and vestibulocollic pathways via VEMP. We prospectively analyzed 30 unilateral idiopathic subjective tinnitus patient's cervical, ocular VEMP tests, tinnitus handicap index scores, symptom duration and compared with contralateral ear and 35 healthy volunteers. The latencies and amplitudes of P1 and N1 waves were recorded and pathologic wave criteria was calculated according to healthy volunteer's data. In cervical VEMP there were significant longer latencies of P1 and N1 waves with respect to contralateral ear and control group. In ocular VEMP test, N1 and P1 latencies and amplitudes were not significantly different. The percentages of pathologic wave of the tinnitus side were not significantly higher in both cervical VEMP and ocular VEMP tests with respect to contralateral side. Tinnitus handicap index scores and symptom duration had no relationship with latency and amplitude of VEMP tests. Although cervical VEMP P1 and N1 latencies were significantly longer, subjective tinnitus did not result in pathological alterations in the VEMP test. Presence of subjective tinnitus is not an influencing factor in the VEMP interpretation.
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effect of acupuncture treatment on hearing and tinnitus in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) refractory to treatment. Patients and Methods: Between January 2013 and May 2015, a total of 25 patients (8 males, 17 females; median age: 43.3 years; range, 18 to 65 years) resistant to medical treatment who underwent acupuncture as salvage therapy were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were evaluated with pure-tone audiometry, Speech Discrimination Score (SDS), and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) at pre-treatment (T0), and after 10th (T1) and 20th sessions (T2) of acupuncture. Results: Hearing loss evaluated according to the four-frequency pure-tone average (PTA; 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 kHz) showed a statistically significant improvement at the end of the 10th session of acupuncture (p=0.017). There was also a significant improvement in the PTA values of the worst three consecutive frequencies at the end of the 20th session (p=0.034). A significant improvement in SDS (p=0.022) and THI (p<0.001) was found at the end of the 20th session. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment yields promising results in the improvement of PTA. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture is also evident in the treatment of tinnitus secondary to SNHL.
Backgroud/Objectives: Transoral laser laryngeal microsurgery (LTLM) has been widely used in the treatment of early-stage glottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) for the past few decades. Although T stage, tumor grade, anterior commissure involvement, type of cordectomy, positive surgical margin, and postoperative additional therapies were accused as the prognostic factors for recurrence, there is still controversy about these data in the literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oncological results of our patients with early glottic LSCC treated with LTLM as a single-modality therapy in a single-center study. Methods: Patients with early-stage (Tis-1–2/N0) glottic LSCC who underwent LTLM as a primary treatment from 2011 to 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The clinicopathological factors and oncologic outcomes were analyzed. Results: One hundred and sixty-one patients were enrolled in this study. The 5-year overall (OS), disease-specific (DSS), disease-free (DFS), and laryngectomy-free survival rates were 84.5%, 97.9%, 79.2%, and 93.5%, respectively. The most common stage, histopathological type, and type of endoscopic cordectomy were T1 stage, well-differentiated cancer, and type 2 cordectomy, respectively. A positive surgical margin was defined in 20 (12.4%) patients. There was a significant relationship between histopathological grade and positive surgical margins (p = 0.038). OS and DSS rates of “wait and see” modality were lower, while DFS of radiotherapy was lower than that of other treatment modalities in patients with positive surgical margins, but the differences were not statistically significant. Nineteen (11.8%) patients had a recurrence. DSS was statistically significantly lower in patients with recurrence (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of our study showed that anterior commissure involvement, surgical margin positivity, and higher T stage statistically did not reduce survival rates in early-stage LSCC patients treated with LTLM. As the histopathological grade of the tumor worsens, the risk of surgical margin positivity increases. RT may have a negative effect on recurrence and organ preservation in the additional treatment of patient with positive surgical margins.
