Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) has emerged as a gasotransmitter molecule that modulates several physiological functions in plants, specially, different biotic and abiotic stresses. Pointed gourd (PG) fruits start losing their soft texture and appealing colour within 2-3 days of harvest, resulting in poor marketability and shelf life. Here, the effect of exogenous H2 S (1 and 2 mm) application on lignification and other biochemical markers linked to ripening, shelf-life and edible quality of PG was assessed during cold (12 °C, 85-90% RH) and ambient (27 ± 2 °C, 55 ± 5% RH) storage. The synergistic effect of H2 S was recorded during simulated storage at ambient conditions. Postharvest H2 S treatment (1 mm) effectively delayed yellowing and chlorophyll loss (four-fold reduction) and maintained the phenolic content and higher antioxidant activity (36%). The H2 S-treated PG fruits had significantly lower lignification and membrane permeability i.e. 15% and 13%, respectively, than control samples. H2 S-treated fruit also maintained higher PAL and lower PPO activity. Therefore, postharvest application of H2 S (2 mm) could be effective in maintaining postharvest quality of PG fruits and extending the marketing period.
The prolongation of coke oven service life beyond 40 years has become the norm in coke ovens abroad. Unfortunately, the average service life of a coke oven battery in India is only about 20 years. This anomaly needs to be rectified. Simultaneously, with the recent introduction of stringent environmental norms for Coke Oven Batteries, oven health gathers more criticality, since oven health and environmental pollution are directly related. A system was introduced at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL for monitoring and diagnosing battery condition in terms of the health of refractory brickwork and the bracing system. The refractory brickwork condition was monitored through cross-leakage measurement of the whole battery as well as individual flues. The condition of the bracing system was monitored through thermal imaging of the oven top focusing on the vulnerable areas where the bracing system (cross and longitudinal tie rods) is in close proximity to heat sources. At the same time, feedback was taken from the on-line pusher ram current measurement system to validate the first two observations. Using these three observations, an integrated battery health monitoring system was developed. The system helped RSP in taking timely preventive repair actions and improving battery health.
The Ligand 3,3 | -((1E,1 | E)-((4-methyl-1,2-phenylene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalene-2-ol) ( L) have been used to synthesize four new Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II),and Cd(II) complexes(1-4).The Ligand (L) was derived from the condensation of 3, 4-diamino Toluene and 2-hydroxy naphthaldehyde in 1:2 molar ratio.The ligand and four new metal complexes were characterized by Spectroscopic studies.Physical methods such as Melting points, Elemental Analysis, and Magnetic moment properties.The FT-IR spectral data indicate that the synthesized ligand was coordinated with the metal ion in a tetradentate manner.The UV/Visible spectra and magnetic moment data showed octahedral geometry for Cr(III) and Co(II) complexes whereas Zn(II) and Cd(II) showed distorted square pyramidal structure.The magnetic moment of metal complexes was low as expected.The synthesized metal complexes were insoluble in many organic solvents thus supports the proposed structure.The tetradentate Schiff base ligand and complexes (1-4) were tested against bacteria E. coli, B. megaterium and P. aeruginosa for their antibacterial activity for the determination of inhibition potential.

This paper presents the factors affecting the uncertainty of measurement in sound transmission loss testing and the single-number quantities (SNQs) used widely in building acoustics. It provides a retrospective view of the recently published work especially in European continent and standard ISO 12999-1 for interpreting and elaborating the concept of calculation of measurement uncertainty in SNQs particularly for the laboratories engaged in sound transmission loss testing in India by presenting case studies for different types of building materials. The study suggests that the poor low frequency sound insulation and low frequency mass-air-mass and flexural resonances inculcate a higher uncertainty in SNQs for building elements. It is imperative to adopt the strategy recommended in ISO 12999-1 in Indian scenario particularly with growing international trade in building materials and technology and for the recognition as well as acceptance of testing results of Indian laboratories across the globe.
This study reports efficacy of three bis pyridinium derivatives of 2-(hydroxyimino)-N-(pyridine-3-yl) acetamide in terms of survival, reactivation of brain and serum acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in diisopropylphosphorofluoridate (DFP) intoxicated Swiss albino male mice. LD50 of DFP (3.9 mg/kg, s.c.) and new oximes, HNK-102, HNK-106, HNK-111, (282.8, 35.0 and 35.0 mg/kg respectively, i.m.) was determined. Various doses of DFP and oximes as treatment doses with atropine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) were used to determine protection index (PI). For time dependent maximum AChE inhibition, two doses of DFP (0.20 and 2.0 LD50) were chosen. At optimized time i.e. Sixty minutes, IC50 value was calculated as 0.249 and 0.017 LD50 of brain and serum AChE, respectively. Shift of DFP induced brain AChE IC50 curves to right was observed at 0.20 LD50 treatment dose of oximes with respect to 2-PAM. These findings propose that new HNK series of oximes are effective antidote, compared to that of 2-PAM in vivo.
The present study concerns an in-depth investigation of the influence of laser surface cladding of Ti-6Al-4V on the microstructure (both the top surface, cross-section and interface), wear resistance, corrosion resistance and bio-activity of AISI 316L stainless steel. Laser surface cladding has been carried out using a 5 kW continuous wave (CW) fibber optics delivery Nd:YAG laser with a beam diameter of 4 mm. Microstructure of the surface clad layer consists of acicular alpha' -phase and the microstructure of the interface consists of equiaxed grains of alpha-phase and white precipitates of FeTi intermetallic phase at the grain boundaries. The average microhardness of the clad zone and the interface increases to 240 and 531 VHN, respectively as compared to 220 VHN for as-received AISI 316L stainless steel. Fretting wear behaviour against hardened steel ball showed a marginal improvement in fretting wear resistance due to laser surface cladding. On the other hand, the wear resistance of the interface increases significantly. An improvement in corrosion resistance with improved bio-activity is also noticed due to laser surface cladding.
Acute ototoxicity is a rare but important complication of antithyroid drugs. Although previous cases have been reported in the medical literature, these cases occurred in younger patients with serological evidence of lupus-like syndrome with positive antidouble-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. We describe the case of a 68-year-old Caucasian male who developed deafness and tinnitus one week after being prescribed carbimazole. The management options include stopping the culprit drug, treatment with immunosuppressive drugs and referring the patient for urgent thyroidectomy. Healthcare professionals who prescribe antithyroid drugs should be aware of this rare but potentially serious complication, so that early drug withdrawal and referral for surgery can be considered.
Haemolytic anaemia generally gives rise to only a modest elevation of serum bilirubin. Unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia of an extreme degree should raise suspicion of additional factors, such as Gilbert's syndrome, hepatocellular dysfunction or renal failure. We present a 17-year-old boy with hereditary spherocytosis coexisting with Gilbert's syndrome.
Epidermoid cysts of the finger phalanx are rare pseudotumours. They are benign lesions with a satisfactory outcome after excision. We describe a case of an epidermoid cyst in the distal phalanx of the ring finger. It was treated successfully and the patient had excellent functional results and radiological healing at one-year follow-up.
Aim: To report a case of papillary renal cell carcinoma in a pediatric patient.Method: A seven-year-old boy complained of hematuria for one year. CT scan showed a mass in the middle zone of the right kidney. Radical nephrectomy was performed without incident.Result: Histology of the specimen showed papillary renal cell carcinoma. As the tumor was stage one, no chemotherapy was offered. At follow-up after 6 months the child was without recurrence or metastases.Conclusions: Papillary renal cell carcinoma is an uncommon kidney tumor in children and in its early stages it can be cured by nephrectomy alone.
The present study was conducted to understand the role of peripheral blood-derived monocytes in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), their contribution in relation to the receptor-mediated processing of circulating immune-complexes (ICs) and the phenotypic and functional changes they undergo due to the abundant cytokines, In this study we have checked the expression of FcRIII (CD16), CR1 and CR3 on the cultured monocytes of RA patients and their phagocytic activity by flow cytometry, Significantly reduced expression of FcRIII, CR1 and CR3 was observed on the monocyte-derived macrophages of RA patients. Phagocytosis of soluble ICs both in the absence and presence of complement was reduced in RA patients. significant direct relationship was observed between FcRIII expression and FcR-mediated phagocytosis as well as between CR1 expression and complement-mediated phagocytosis, indicating impaired receptor-mediated processing in RA patients, Effect of three cytokines, TNF-beta, IL1-alpha and IFN-gamma on the receptor expression and phagocytic activity was also determined. Our results suggest that receptor expression and phagocytic activity of monocyte population in RA is affected by the existing cytokine milieu.
The method of characteristic perturbation is used to analyze the main features of small amplitude waves generated by a planar piston-like surface in a perfectly conducting gas. The nonlinear effects and the effect of a magnetic field on the wave motion are fully taken into account in the analysis. The trajectory of the wave, the particle path in the physical plane, and the speed of propagation for a weak shock wave are calculated. From the calculation, it is clear that the speed of propagation for a weak shock wave is the average of the characteristic speeds on both its sides. It is also found, in the case of central expansion waves, that the gas velocity is not influenced by the magnetic field, whereas the pressure and the density are lowered in comparison to what they would be in the absence of a magnetic field.
A previous mass-conserving finite element cavitation model is extended to include energy conservation in the lubricant film. The extension introduces no additional iteration and very little additional computational effort.
Hepatobiliary ascariasis is an uncommon condition outside the Kashmir valley. We report here a patient with this disease from the eastern part of India.
BACKGROUND:The acid suppressive abilities of H2 receptor antagonists and anticholinergics have been claimed to be additive.METHODS:A multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial comparing ranitidine (150 mg) plus propantheline bromide 15 mg at bedtime to ranitidine 300 mg alone at bedtime was conducted in 161 patients with endoscopically confirmed uncomplicated duodenal ulcer.RESULTS:After six weeks of therapy, ulcer healing rates in the two groups were comparable ie 80% in the combination group (ranitidine + propantheline) and 79.4% in the ranitidine group. Pain relief after one, two and four weeks of treatment was also comparable in the two groups. Side effects to drugs were minor and comparable in both the groups.CONCLUSION:A combination of 150 mg ranitidine and 15 mg propantheline bromide is as efficacious as 300 mg ranitidine in inducing healing of uncomplicated duodenal ulcers, with similar side-effects but at greatly reduced cost.
A mass-conserving simulation algorithm for cavitating hydrodynamic lubrication has been described elsewhere. The algorithm, which is particularly well adapted to finite element implementation, is outlined qualitatively and demonstrated quantitatively through real and ideal engine bearing applications studied previously by others. Present simulation results and previous data agree reasonably closely for these applications, providing a limited validation of the present algorithm and demonstrating the importance of mass conservation in engine bearing design analysis.
