Background and purpose Female judo has an intensive development at the current time. One of the urgent task is a developing a training process gender-specific knowledge for female judokas, taking into account gender characteristics, is a very urgent task. Among the various types of monitoring, one of the most reliable and valid methods is the multiple assessment of mental and psychophysiological indicators of judo performance. There are different opinions about the gender aspect of stress's impact on special performance in martial arts. At the same time, there is a lack of understanding of gender-specific characteristics of the development of stress resistance characteristics in elite judokas. The purpose: to study the gender aspects of psychophysiological characteristics of stress resistance in highly qualified judokas through comprehensive testing. Methods The study involved 33 elite male judokas (age 26.62; SD = 3.62) and 24 elite female judokas (age 24.73; SD = 3.57). The choice of research methods measuring psychophysiological factors was based on previous studies demonstrating reliable and valid assessment of factors correlated with specific athletic performance. The test battery is a classic component of the "Multipsychometer-05" computerized psychodiagnostic system. Results The obtained results demonstrate a correlation between stress tolerance and nervous system endurance in judokas. In female judokas, an inverse relationship was observed between the stability of test performance and stress resistance. Furthermore, female judokas with high stress resistance demonstrated a balance between excitation and inhibition of nervous processes. A correlation was established between stress tolerance and autonomic regulation of heart rate in elite female judokas. Conclusions Gender differences in stress resistance among elite judokas are associated with distinct patterns of psychophysiological variables. Male judokas exhibit psychological discomfort and sympathetic tension. Conversely, female judokas with lower stress tolerance show a predominance of nervous system arousal. Low stress tolerance in female judokas is associated with shorter decision-making time. One of the gender differences between elite judokas is autonomic regulation. In addition, high stress resistance in female judokas was associated with low levels of sympathetic and parasympathetic activation of the autonomic nervous system.
PurposeThis study aimed to examine the effect of mental wellbeing on anger and aggression among combat sports athletes and to investigate the mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of professionalism in this relationship. The study sought to conceptually elucidate the associations between athletes’ psychological resources and their levels of anger and aggression.MethodThe study was designed using a relational survey model and included 333 Olympic combat sports athletes (181 males, 152 females). Data were collected using the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale–Short Form, the Competitive Aggressiveness and Anger Scale, the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale–Short Form, and the Professionalism Scale for Athletes. The validity of the measurement models was tested through confirmatory factor analysis (AMOS 21). Hypotheses were tested using SPSS 25 and Hayes’ PROCESS Macro Models 4, 1, and 14.ResultsThe indirect effect of mental wellbeing on anger and aggression through psychological resilience was found to be significant (b = −0.302, 95% CI [−0.479, −0.148]), explaining approximately 9% of the total variance. The moderating effect of professionalism was examined, and the interaction between psychological resilience and professionalism was found to be statistically significant (b = −0.032, 95% CI [−0.051, −0.012]). Interaction analyses indicated that the effects were stronger at higher levels of professionalism. A conditional process analysis (PROCESS Model 14) revealed that professionalism moderated the indirect effect (b = −0.029, 95% CI [−0.047, −0.014]); specifically, the effect of mental wellbeing on anger and aggression through psychological resilience became more pronounced when professionalism was high.ConclusionThe findings demonstrate that mental wellbeing has a significant effect on anger and aggression among combat sports athletes through psychological resilience. This effect was stronger among athletes with higher levels of professionalism, highlighting its critical role in reducing anger and aggression. The results suggest that psychological resilience and professionalism are key factors in emotional regulation and performance management among athletes. Future studies may benefit from employing longitudinal and experimental designs to examine the effects of mental wellbeing on psychological resilience over time.
Purpose: to analyze the competitive activity of medalist wrestlers at the 2024 Olympic Games. Material and methods. The analysis of video recordings of the final matchеs (matchеs for 1st and 3rd places) at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris (France) was conducted. A total of 18 matchеs were analyzed. The initial data of the athletes' performances were taken from the website of the international wrestling federation UWW. The analysis of competitive activity was carried out using the internet platform (Performance Data Analysis - PDA), which is used by the international wrestling federation UWW. Statistical analysis of data was carried out using licensed Excel spreadsheet packages. For categorical data, the results were expressed in absolute numbers (number of times) and percentages (%). To compare the indicators of the wrestlers' competitive activity, the Student's t-test was used, the extraction was considered reliable at (p<0,05). Results: analysis of scientific and methodological information and Internet resources allowed us to determine that the study of various parameters of competitive activity at major international competitions is important in sports science. Analysis of the matchеs of Greco-Roman style medalists at the 2024 Olympic Games allowed us to establish that the highest number of points was scored by wrestlers of the middle weight categories 77 kg (29 points) and 67 kg (26 points), the lowest number of points was scored by wrestlers of the 97 kg weight category (10 points). It should be noted that wrestlers of the 77 kg weight category have almost the same number of points scored in the standing position (15 points) and in the ground (14 points), and wrestlers of the 97 kg weight category won all points in the standing position (10 points). For wrestlers in the 87 kg and 97 kg weight categories, the number of non-technical points exceeds the technical ones, this is explained by the fact that wrestlers in these weight categories received points for passivity and pushing off the mat. The largest number of points was received for simple technical and tactical actions (TTD): passivity (26,55 % of all TTD); falls (19,47); rolls in the ground (17,70 %); throws with the back and reverse belt (12.39 %); pushing off the mat (7,08%). There were few points scored for TTD from the group of throws from the stand (1,77 %). This negatively contributes to the spectacle of this sport. Conclusions. An analysis of the competitive activity of Greco-Roman style medalist wrestlers at the 2024 Olympic Games was conducted. It was found that wrestlers scored more points in the standing position (61,95 %) than in the ground (38,05 %) and technical points (60,18 %) were scored more than non-technical points (39,82 %) and these differences have a significant difference (p<0,05) in both cases. It was determined that wrestlers often perform simple technical and tactical actions that do not lead to the risk of missing a counterattack. It was found that Greco-Roman wrestling requires adjustment of the competition rules.
PurposeThis research aimed to examine the fluctuations in body composition and Urine-Specific Gravity (USG) of elite wrestlers in a high-level official wrestling competition.MethodThirty-one wrestlers in the Türkiye Senior Greco-Romen Wrestling national team participated in this research. Wrestlers were divided into weight loss and non-weight loss groups, and changes in their body composition and USG were measured at three different times (beginning of the camp, weigh-in, and before the competition). The duration between the beginning of the camp and the competition weigh-in time was considered as a dehydration process and the duration between the competition weigh-in time and before the competition was regarded as a rehydration process. In the data analysis, 3 × 2 repeated measures ANOVA was used.ResultsIt was determined that during the dehydration process of wrestlers who lost weight, there was a decrease of 4.02%, 2.50%, 14.62%, and 2.66% in body weight, FFM, FM, and TBW, whereas, during the rehydration process, there was a gain of 1.85%, 1.77%, 2.63%, and 1.87%, respectively. In addition, it was determined that wrestlers who lost weight had a 0.87% increase in USG during the dehydration process and a 0.41% decrease in the rehydration process. The results show that wrestlers cannot regain body weight and FM lost in the hydration fluctuation during a competition, but they can regain FFM, TBW, and USG. However, although it was determined that the wrestlers were statistically able to regain FFM, TBW, and USG, they could not return to the levels at the beginning of the camp.ConclusionIt was determined that before a high-level official wrestling competition, wrestlers still preferred weight loss practices and it was determined that they were exposed to fluctuations in their body composition and USG. It is thought that this result may negatively affect the wrestlers’ health and competition performance during a high-level competition.
Background. The Olympic Games represent the greatest sporting event, uniting athletes from around the world spirit of competition, achievement, and unity. The 2023 World Championship serves as the primary qualifier 2024 Olympic Games, providing critical data on the technical and strategic performance of elite wrestlers. Problem. The Study Aim is to identify key aspects of the best-ranked teams at the 2023 Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship and to conduct a comparative analysis. Methods. This study analyzed 271 matches involving 86 wrestlers from 10 countries using the Performance Analysis platform by United World Wrestling. Key performance indicators such as match duration, number in standing and parterre positions, and success indices were calculated. Results. Performance indicators revealed preferences for standing and parterre positions, with teams like France scoring highest on the Most Successful Wrestler Index at 2.69 and 1.92, respectively. Notably, actions wrench, step out, lifts, and take down represented over 70% of all actions. Statistical analysis confirmed differences in parterre actions among wrestlers from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia. Conclusions. The study underscores the complexity of tactical preferences that influence team performance championships. The findings underscore the pivotal role of advanced analytics in enhancing understanding tegic planning in competitive wrestling. The success index metrics, while associated with teams' rankings and qualification, do not fully capture the extent of their achievements.
It is assumed that the selection of gifted children aged 13-14 years old is dominated by those with accelerated biological development. A better understanding of this problem can greatly improve the selection process for gifted children. The paper aimed to determine the differences in motor, functional, and sport-specific skills between children with different levels of biological acceleration. The study was conducted on a sample of 26 wrestlers aged 13.8±0.74 years old selected from the city of Zagreb. The participants were divided into three groups according to the acceleration of biological development (early maturers, n=9; normal, n=10; late maturers, n=7) and tested with a battery of 10 tests (6 motor, 1 functional, and 3 sport-specific). As was expected, even though there were no differences in experience and placement, the groups differed in all physical characteristics (Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA: age p=0.01; body mass, p<0.01; body height, p<0.01; sitting body height, p<0.01; body mass index, p=0.02). The groups differed significantly in two sport-specific tests and one motor test (Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA: wrestling bridge flexibility p=0.02; flipover p=0.04; medicine ball throw p<0.01). Although these were selected wrestlers, not all of them were classified as early maturers; rather, they were evenly distributed in different groups. We can assume that late maturers had technical–tactical advantages that compensated for the early maturers’ advantage in explosive power. Early maturers were better in terms of explosive power, but the late maturers were better at sport-specific flexibility, as expected.
Background and Study Aim. In the basis of the boxer's power qualities is the ability to perceive and process external information. Therefore, in order to ensure the proper training of qualified boxers, there is a need to monitor the functional state of the boxer’s organism. The relationship between cognitive functions and special working capacity of elite boxers were studied. Material and Methods. The level of special working capacity was studied by the test of punching a boxer for 8 s at maximum speed. Cognitive functions (verbal and nonverbal intelligence, and word memory) were studied using the "Multipsychometer-05" hardware-software. 26 elite boxers, aged 18-24, were tested. Results. The research results showed that groups of boxers with different levels of special working capacity differ in terms of accuracy and efficiency when performing a cognitive task with verbal stimuli. The resulted that the high level of special working capacity of elite boxers is provided by the manifestation of verbal intelligence. Besides, the special working capacity is related with activation of mental functions of attention, speed of visual perception, operational and logical thinking. At the same time, significantly higher values of decision latency in this group of boxers indicate a slowdown in the processing of nonverbal information in boxers with a high level of special working capacity to work. It can be noted that the special working capacity of boxers has a direct relationship with quality and inverse relationship with the speed of information processing. The speed of memorizing verbal information is better in boxers with a high level of special working capacity. This fact indicates the importance of the verbal factor for the assimilation of special information in the training of boxers. The best values of accuracy and efficiency indicate the relationship of special working capacity in skilled boxers with the quality and volume of memorized verbal information. Conclusions. The special working capacity of elite boxers has a direct relationship with quality and inverse relationship with the speed of information processing. The elite boxers with a high level of special working capacity have a better speed of verbal information memorizing.
No research was previously performed on wrestling related to parental support. It is not known whether there are differences in support between younger and older children. The popularity of a sport can be reflected in parental support, and parents may be more inclined towards popular sports. The aim of this research was to examine differences in parental support among wrestlers of different age categories and between those coming from communities in which wrestling is a popular sport versus communities in which it is less popular. The sample of participants consisted of 172 wrestlers. The Parental Support Scale for Children in Sports was applied. Parental willingness to set an example was lower. As far as age is concerned, the period of entry into specialisation is sensitive. At this age, children perceive less parental support (p = 0.04) and lower parental belief in the benefits of sports (p = 0.01). The popularity of the sport is related to parental support. In environments in which wrestling is popular, parents know the sport better and can participate; therefore, children perceive more parental support. The findings of this study may help coaches to better understand athlete–parent relationships.
Purpose: Given the growth in the use of wearable measuring technology, this study aimed to investigate the frequency of writing about wearable monitoring devices in the field of sports sciences and sports-related health professions during the years affected by the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 to 2022). The goal was to observe the number of studies right before the quarantine and during the first years of pandemic. Methodology: A systematic literature analysis was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC) and Scopus databases in March 2023. The filters used in the search were the following: original scientific papers in the English language and open access. The research field was sports sciences in the past three years (2020–2022) in the Wos CC, and health professions and medicine in Scopus. Results: The initial search resulted in 54 studies in the WoS, 16 of which were included in a detailed qualitative analysis, and 297 studies in Scopus with 19 of them analyzed (35 altogether). The keywords used were “fitness watch” (sport watch, smartwatch), “smart shoes”, “smart clothing”, “smart ring”, “smart belt”, and “smart glasses”. In the past three years, there has been a steady increase in the number of studies using smart monitoring devices to measure their data (nine in 2020, nine in 2021, and seventeen in 2022). Results showed that the most used device is a smartwatch, while the most carried out studies were about physical activity and daily activities of living. Furthermore, there are more studies about measuring devices being used as testing equipment than about device performance in general. Conclusions: This study summarizes various research conducted in the field of sports with the use of wearable measuring devices to determine the frequency of use of such devices in sport studies.
Background and Study Aim: Success in wrestling depends on many different factors, but strength could be considered as the most important one. Different strength indicators are closely related to high-level wrestling performance. The aim of this review is to generalize the recommendations of the authors of works dedicated to the analysis of muscle strength in wrestlers, regardless of style (Greco-Roman and freestyle) and knowledge of the most commonly used tests to assess the various manifestations of this motor ability Material and Methods: The search and the analysis of the studies were done in accordance to PRISMA guidelines. A literature search of 3 databases (Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct) was conducted. The identified studies had to meet the following criteria: year of publication (2010-2021), published in English, wrestlers as sample of par- ticipants, who do not suffer from acute and chronic injuries. Results: A total of 24 papers were included to analyses, with a total of 1254 participants, both genders. Greco-Roman style participants were 530, while freestylers were 529. Hand grip strength conducted 18 studies, explosive power of legs 12 studies, basic motor tests 8 studies, 1RM squat and bench 4 studies, isokinetic strength con- ducted 4 studies and isometric strength only once. The most commonly used test to assess different types of strength in wrestlers are handgrip strength, isometric and isokinetic strength, 1RM bench and squat, explo- sive strength of legs tests and basic motor tests. Conclusions: The authors cannot with certainty determine an optimal wrestlers profile, but this review can serve as an framework for eventual practical preparation for the demands of competition.
Purpose: improving the technical and tactical readiness of qualified taekwondo wrestlers at the stage of specialized basic training to improve the effectiveness of competitive activity. Material and methods. The study involved 30 athletes aged 12-13 years. Athletes are engaged in WTF taekwondo in the Dnepropetrovsk region. The research was carried out on the basis of the Communal out-of-school educational institution "City Specialized Children's and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve" of the Dnipro City Council (Taekwondo Department of the WTF) and the sports club "Bars" (Dnipro). Created control and experimental groups in the amount of 15 young men in each group. Anthropometric methods, the index method were used; pedagogical methods for studying the physical and technical-tactical readiness of taekwondo fighters aged 12-13, analysis of video recordings of competitive fights of qualified taekwondo fighters in weight categories up to 33 kg, up to 37 kg, up to 41 kg, up to 45 kg, up to 49 kg, up to 53 kg, up to 57 kg ; methods of mathematical statistics. Results. After conducting a pedagogical experiment based on the results of general physical training among athletes in the experimental group, the increase in performance indicators was from 8.97% to 54.91%; in athletes of the control group - from 1.90% to 31.03%. Also, the taekwondo players of the experimental group significantly outweighed the athletes from the control group for all indicators of special physical fitness, the increase in indicators was from 10.79% to 32.30%; in the control group - from 1.25% to 17.62%. The analysis of performance indicators showed that the athletes of the experimental group significantly reduced all indicators (p < 0.01), in addition to the number of effective performance programs. Indicators of technical and tactical readiness among athletes in the control group grew from 2.38% to 19.85%; in taekwondo players of the experimental group, the increase in indicators of claves was from 13.22% to 56.53%. Conclusion. Analysis of the scientific and methodological literature on the problem of training taekwondoists at the stage of specialized basic training revealed a number of problematic issues. This concerns the features of improving the process of technical and tactical training of taekwondo cadets. The structure of the annual training of taekwondoists at the stage of specialized basic training has been developed and experimentally substantiated, which is built taking into account the individual style of conducting a competitive taekwondo duel, the manifestation of physical qualities and the calendar of competitions. An improvement in the level of physical fitness of taekwondo wrestlers, a better performance of complex technical and tactical actions and a higher efficiency of indicators of the competitive activity of athletes have been established. It has been determined that the most dominant and effective fighting styles are game and tempo, which is associated with the specifics of the WTF taekwondo and the rules of the competition.
BackgroundGrappling is a wrestling style that combines different techniques such as freestyle wrestling, jiu-jitsu, judo, sambo, and others. As with other combat sports, it requires categorizing the athletes in weight classes, which leads to the use of certain methods to lose body weight in a short amount of time which poses a serious threat to athletes’ health and wellbeing. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the most widespread rapid weight loss (RWL) methods and sources of influence used by grappling athletes.MethodsA total of 145 athletes took part in the study by voluntarily filling out a questionnaire regarding their weight loss techniques and methods. They were divided into two groups, male (27.7 ± 5.2 years, 1.76 ± 0.13 m, and 82.1 ± 20 kg) and female (27.33 ± 6.3 years, 1.65 ± 0.08 m, and 64.3 ± 10.4 kg), for further statistical analysis. After calculating descriptive statistics for all the variables, a t-test was conducted for gender differences in weight loss and weight regain, and a chi-square test measured the diversity in techniques and source of influence.ResultsOut of 145 participants, 120 athletes (85.2%) reported engaging in rapid weight loss prior to weigh-in. Coaches (52.4 and 59%) and teammates (42.6 and 22.1%) seemed to be the most influential on their rapid weight-loss strategies, whereas physicians (17.1 and 17.9%) and parents (23.2 and 23.1%) were the least influential. A statistical difference between men and women (p = 0.05) was found when teammates were a source of influence (42.6 and 21.1%, respectively). Regarding the methods used, both groups practiced gradual dieting (85.4 and 79.5%) as the most prevalent, followed by increased exercise (79 and 66.6%) and sauna (78.7 and 66.6%). Moreover, men trained in plastic suits significantly more often than women (67.1 vs. 41%, p = 0.01).ConclusionRapid weight loss is detrimental to athletes’ health and wellbeing. Hence, it is crucial to find and implement methods that will control and ultimately limit its use in combat sports. Physicians and nutritionists need to be closely linked with the staff, collaborate and supervise the weight cutting.
Given the importance of physical activity for the prevention of overweight, this study sought to determine the type and number of physical activity risk behaviours that were associated with overweight in Croatian school children and their association with maternal characteristics – mothers’ formal education, employment, and weight status. This paper used data from the Croatian Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative study from 2015/2016. During an eight-week period anthropometric measurements of children were taken. Data on children’s physical activity risk behaviours and their mothers’ characteristics were provided by the mothers of 4,045 children from the second and third grade (median age 8.6) who were included in the analysis. Insufficient active play outdoors, excessive screen time and exhibiting two or three physical activity risk behaviours were significantly associated with childhood overweight. Children of less educated mothers had lower odds for insufficient active play outdoor and higher odds for insufficient frequenting of a sports or dancing club and exhibiting one, two or three physical activity risk behaviours. Children of mothers who were overweight had higher odds for insufficient sleeping, insufficient frequenting of a sports or dancing club and exhibiting two risk behaviours. Children of unemployed mothers had higher odds for insufficient frequenting of a sports or dancing club and for exhibiting two or three risk behaviours. Physical activity risk behaviours in school children were associated with overweight, as well as maternal characteristics. This finding should be taken into consideration when planning and implementing health promotion and childhood overweight prevention activities.
Using sport exercise with herbal supplements is one of the recommended methods for controlling obesity and its complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of eight weeks of aerobic exercise and consuming caraway on C-reactive protein (CRP) and sleep quality in obese women. In aquasi-experimental study, 30 obese women were selected by convenience sampling. Then, they were randomly divided into 4 groups: supplement-exercise (SE); placebo-exercise (PE); exercise (E), and control. The supplement group consumed 50mg of caraway per kilogram of body weight daily, and the placebo-exercise group consumed the same amount of starch powder. Aerobic exercises were performed for 8 weeks, three sessions aweek with an intensity of 65-75% of maximum heart rate. The level of CRP was measured by special laboratory kits. Sleep quality was evaluated by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after the intervention. It was indicated that waist to hip ratio (WHR) of the SE group was significantly different with all the groups (p < 0.05). Body fat percent (BFP) of the SE group was also significantly different with control group (p = 0.042). WHR in SE group was significantly different with control (p = 0.006) and exercise group (p = 0.021). The CRP of the SE group was significantly different from that of the control group (p = 0.000), and the sleep quality of the SE group was significantly different only the control group (p = 0.001). Consuming caraway with aerobic exercise has positive effects on the level of C-reactive protein and sleep quality.
Background and Study Aim: Reasons why wrestlers and athletes of other combat sports (boxing, judo, taekwondo, etc.) reduce weight loss are better anthropometric characteristics of wrestlers (longitudinal and skeletal volume) compared to opponents in lower weight categories, better focus and motivation of wrestlers, etc. Main cognitive goal of this research was knowledge about the relationship of rapid weight loss indicators and selected psychological indicators on success of Croatian wrestlers. Material and Methods: The research was conducted on 200 Croatian Greco-Roman style wrestlers. The amount of weight loss, the percentage of weight loss, and specific urine density (USG) were determined. Profile of Mood States Questionnaires (POMS), pre-competition anxiety (SCAI-2), goal orientation (TESQ), and intrinsic motivation (IMI) were used. Results: Statistically significant correlation (p = 0.003) of rapid weight loss indicators and selected psychological indicators, with success was determined. Statistically significant correlation was found in the POMS variables (fatigue, p = 0.014), pre-competitive anxiety (self-confidence, p = -0.017), task orientation (p = 0.019) and intrinsic motivation (competence, p = -0.025). Conclusions: Successful wrestlers, despite being dehydrated, are less tired, more interested, more satisfied, have greater confidence and are more task-oriented than less-successful wrestlers. It is assumed that there are differences between age groups of wrestlers which should be investigated by future research.
There is a strong relationship between body composition and performance in male soccer players. This study aimed to display an optimal body height and weight, and body composition profile of male soccer players for four competitive age groups. This cross-sectional study included four groups: U-15 (n = 152), U-17 (n = 154), U-19 (n = 61), and seniors (n = 27). Body height and weight were measured under standard conditions, and the bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA) analyzed body composition. On average, soccer players in the U-15 group had significantly lower body height, weight, body mass index, skeletal muscle mass, fat-free mass, total body water and basal metabolic rate than U-17, U-19 and seniors, but a higher percentage of body fat than U-17 and U-19, p < 0.05. In addition, the results show significant non-linear increases in body height, weight and body composition as the age of soccer players increases, with the exception of the percentage of body fat mass, which tends to significantly decrease with age. The main findings of this study are that body fat mass remains stable and similar across all age groups, including in the senior squad.
The aim of this research was conducted with the aim to examine the influence of body mass on seven measured variables that evaluate the anthropometric characteristics, the motor and functional abilities of boys from 11 to 13 years of age, to determine whether this effect differs in boys who are engaged in team sports played with a ball, martial arts or boys that are not engaged in any sport, and examine the impact of doing sport on the body mass index. The research was conducted on a sample of 147 boys and with a sample of measuring instruments consisted of 10 valid and reliable tests used in elementary and high schools in Croatia. Research used one-sided ANOVA and pairwise t-tests with Bonferroni correction. With Pearson's correlation the correlation of the body mass index with the results of functional abilities was established and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test determined the normality of samples for residual of dependent parameters, and the Three Way Mixed ANOVA was used. Theconnection of body weight with six measured variables that define the physical conditionof boys is great and extremely negative. A moderate degree of correlation was established (-0.45) between the body mass index (ITM) and the results of functional abilities evaluated by the six-minute run test (F6'), pull up endurance (-0.48), trunk lifts (-0.33) and standing long jump (-0.345). It was found that there is a significant difference in the ITM of nonathletes and boys who were engaged in sports (p <0.0000000001), but no significant difference was found between boys engaged in martial arts and boys engaged in team sports played with a ball. The highest values in variables of standing long jumpwere observed in boys who were engaged in some martial arts, and the lowest values in boys non-athletes (AS = 164.47; SD = 26.38; F = 0.871). Equally, the highest value in the variablepull up endurance had boysengaged inany kind of sport, but the influence of body weight was least evident in boys engaged in martial arts. With non-athletes the influence of body weight is significantly more negative than inboys who were engaged in sport (AS = 29.84; SD = 23.92; F = 1.350).A statistically significant difference in changes in anthropometric characteristics, motor and functional abilities between sports groups has not been established and it can be concluded that doing sportof any kind not only has a positive effect on motor and functional abilities but also mitigates the negative impact of body weight. The obtained results show that the Physical Education classes in elementary school alone cannot guarantee a long-term positive effect on the health and anthropological characteristics of boys.
