ABSTRACT: This study examined the determinants, perceived benefits, and barriers to the adoption of Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) in Brazilian agriculture, with a focus on the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Digital transformation has become a strategic driver of efficiency, decision-making, and sustainability in rural management, yet the diffusion of FMIS remains limited. To investigate the factors shaping adoption, we conducted a survey with 103 farmers in August 2023 and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and Probit modeling. The results indicated that financial constraints, distrust in digital technologies, and limited availability of qualified labor significantly reduce the likelihood of adoption. Conversely, FMIS are positively valued for their role in fiscal and accounting management, suggesting that their administrative benefits are more widely recognized than their operational potential. These findings underscore the importance of targeted strategies to promote digital inclusion in agriculture. Public policies and private initiatives aimed to improve training, facilitating access to credit, and strengthening digital infrastructure are essential to overcome current barriers. By addressing structural and behavioral challenges, FMIS adoption can be expanded, supporting the modernization and competitiveness of Brazilian agriculture.
PurposeThis study aims to measure the performance of agribusiness cooperatives and investigate the determinants of their performance differentials.Design/methodology/approachMicrodata obtained from a sample of 230 Brazilian agribusiness cooperatives in the year 2022 were analyzed. We combined cluster analysis, data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Tobit regression models.FindingsCooperatives in the sample presented low technical efficiency (TE) scores, with average efficiency levels of 21.85%, 35.96 and 63.93% for clusters 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Thus, these firms could considerably increase the production value with the same endowment of inputs (labor and capital) and production technology. It was also observed that larger cooperatives tend to be more technically efficient than small ones. Board members' education level and the proportion of women in the workforce have positive and statistically significant effects on TE of cooperatives.Originality/valueStudies on TE in agricultural cooperatives in the context of Brazil considering microdata are scarce. Relevant managerial propositions are presented.
Food waste accounts for nearly one-third of global food production, and Brazil is among the countries with the highest levels of household food waste, exacerbating national food insecurity that affects approximately 52 million people. Addressing this challenge is crucial for advancing cleaner production and more sustainable consumption patterns. This study examines the behavioral determinants of food waste in Brazilian households to support the development of prevention-oriented strategies. A literature review identified key behavioral drivers, informing an analytical framework grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Survey data collected from 2047 consumers were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results confirmed eleven of the eighteen proposed hypotheses. Environmental and economic concerns, feelings of guilt, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control significantly increased consumers' intention to reduce food waste. Conversely, actual food waste behavior was primarily explained by perceived behavioral control, household planning practices, consumption of convenience foods, and the identity associated with being a good provider. By highlighting how behavioral factors shape household food waste in an emerging economy, this study contributes to the literature on sustainable consumption, offers insights for designing effective food waste prevention policies, and supports broader efforts to promote cleaner production and reduce resource inefficiencies and environmental impacts.
Objective: Analyze the extent of food waste that occurs in a Popular Restaurant unit located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Theoretical Framework: In Brazil, “popular restaurants” are establishments that provide affordable meals to low-income people who are food insecure. Reducing waste in these restaurants would make it possible to expand the population served, as well as improve the quality of the meals offered. Method: The study was conducted in two stages. Initially, we diagnosed the problem through semi-structured interviews, participant observation and data collection. We then compared the results obtained with those reported in the literature on food waste in restaurants. Results and Discussion: We found that the restaurant in question sets targets for wasted dishes (3%) and kitchen scraps (2%), allowing the determination of the overall limit on the amount of wasted food. The restaurant exceeded these targets in the period analyzed, characterizing excessive food waste. Research Implications: The research highlights the importance of controlling food waste, contributing to operational efficiency, cost reduction and promoting sustainability. Originality/Value: The research stands out for its originality in investigating food waste in a popular restaurant, a topic little explored in academic literature. Its practical approach provides unprecedented data and replicable strategies for waste management, contributing to public policies on food security and sustainability.
Food waste is a global challenge with critical impacts. This study examines fruit and vegetable waste in Brazilian street markets, an underexplored yet essential sector in fresh food distribution. A theoretical model was tested through a survey of 138 vendors in Cuiab & aacute;, Brazil. Five hypotheses addressed climatic factors, inadequate practices, sales planning, appearance standards, and market organization. Using PLS-SEM, significant effects were found for handling, appearance standards, and market organization. The results highlight the need for vendor training, consumer education, and public policy improvements. The model offers a replicable framework to support collaborative efforts to reduce food waste.
ABSTRACT: The National School Feeding Program (PNAE) is the oldest and most extensive food and nutrition program in Brazil. Art. 14 of Law 11.947 stipulate that at least 30% of its operational resources need be used to purchase family farming products. However, there are important barriers that hinder the application of this law. The present article developed a conceptual model that described and analyzed the barriers to this requirement. A systematic literature review identified twelve barriers, divided into three constructs political administrative infrastructure and human capital, which enables PNAE management to develop mitigation strategies, including a larger number of farmers in the program, thereby increasing its efficiency.
Abstract Lean manufacturing (LM) is a management philosophy focused on reducing waste while enhancing system productivity. Although its advancements have been more pronounced in the manufacturing sector, the benefits that LM are increasingly being recognized in other areas, including agriculture. Research on the application of LM in agriculture and livestock farming remains limited but has been gaining traction in recent years, as evidenced by the findings of this study. To contribute to the exploration of this emerging field, this article aims to map the current research landscape through a systematic literature review, supplemented by a content analysis. The SLR presented in this study had three main objectives: to identify which LM tools and techniques are most used in rural production, their benefits, and the elements that are central to their successful implementation. The research identified value stream mapping as the most widely used tool in rural production. The primary benefits observed were waste reduction and increased farm revenue. Successful implementation of LM in this context requires a five-step process, which is detailed in the paper.
