The Helmholtz Centers operate scientific-technical infrastructures that produce a high volume of digital research data, making Helmholtz a hub for expertise in research data. With the rapid digital transformation and growing volume of data, Helmholtz has implemented relevant policies and engaged in NFDI in various ways to manage and use research data effectively. The Helmholtz Information & Data Science Incubator, in particular the HMC and HIFIS platforms, contribute to these networking activities. The Helmholtz Open Science Office organized several internal forums for Helmholtz members to discuss NFDI, their findings will be presented at the Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI). Helmholtz' multifaceted commitment to research data infrastructure is closely related to NFDI activities. The presentation at CoRDI will demonstrate how a large national research data ecosystem can be successfully connected to the NFDI network, highlighting opportunities for future collaboration.
Currently, there is limited research investigating the phenomenon of research data repositories being shut down, and the impact this has on the long-term availability of data. This paper takes an infrastructure perspective on the preservation of research data by using a registry to identify 191 research data repositories that have been closed and presenting information on the shutdown process. The results show that 6.2% of research data repositories indexed in the registry were shut down. The risks resulting in repository shutdown are varied. The median age of a repository when shutting down is 12 years. Strategies to prevent data loss at the infrastructure level are pursued to varying extent. Of the repositories in the sample, 44% migrated data to another repository and 12% maintain limited access to their data collection. However, neither strategy is a permanent solution. Finally, the general lack of information on repository shutdown events as well as the effect on the findability of data and the permanence of the scholarly record are discussed.

For more than ten years, re3data, a global registry of research data repositories (RDRs), has been helping scientists, funding agencies, libraries, and data centers with finding, identifying, and referencing RDRs. As the world's largest directory of RDRs, re3data currently describes over 3,000 RDRs on the basis of a comprehensive metadata schema. The service allows searching for RDRs of any type and from all disciplines, and users can filter results based on a wide range of characteristics. The re3data RDR descriptions are available as Open Data accessible through an API and are utilized by numerous Open Science services. re3data is engaged in various initiatives and projects concerning data management and is mentioned in the policies of many scientific institutions, funding organizations, and publishers. This article reflects on the ten-year experience of running re3data and discusses ten key issues related to the management of an Open Science service that caters to RDRs worldwide.
Against the background of continuously rising licensing costs for scientific literature, an international discussion is going on about the open access transformation of the scientific publication system. This article considens a prominent example of this debate: It examines the specialist discourse on the negotiations between the Project DEAL initiative and the three largest international academic publishers, Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley. The analysis focuses particularly on the concept of "Open Access" with its various implications and interpretations. Using theoretical categories from the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD) and Critical Discourse Analysis, more than 200 online available documents were systematically contextualised and analysed. The most important discourse phenomena and problems are worked out from the texts. A list of the actors involved in the discourse and a chronicle of discourse-relevant events serve as contextualization. The discourse analysis reveals that in the debate around Project DEAL financial issues and concrete implementation models are the primary focus of dispute, while ethically motivated arguments and issues play a subordinate role.
Zusammenfassung Aufgrund der stetig steigenden Lizenzkosten für wissenschaftliche Literatur gibt es eine international geführte Diskussion über die Transformation des wissenschaftlichen Publikationssystems in den Open-Access-Modus. Der vorliegende Beitrag betrachtet ein prominentes Beispiel dieser Debatte: Er untersucht den Fachdiskurs zu den Verhandlungen der wissenschaftspolitischen Initiative Projekt DEAL mit den drei größten Wissenschaftsverlagen Elsevier, Springer Nature und Wiley. Die Analyse konzentriert sich insbesondere auf das Konzept „Open Access“ mit seinen unterschiedlichen Implikationen und Deutungsvarianten. Unter Verwendung theoretischer Kategorien aus der Wissenssoziologischen und der Kritischen Diskursanalyse werden über 200 online verfügbare Dokumente systematisch kontextualisiert und analysiert und die wichtigsten Phänomene bzw. Probleme aus den Texten herausgearbeitet und zusammengefasst. Eine Aufstellung der beteiligten Akteure sowie eine Chronik relevanter Ereignisse dienen zur Kontextualisierung. Die Diskursanalyse verdeutlicht, dass sich in der Debatte um Projekt DEAL primär über finanzielle Fragen und konkrete Umsetzungsmodelle gestritten wird, während ethisch motivierte Argumente und Fragestellungen früherer Open-Access-Initiativen in den Hintergrund rücken.
re3data is the global registry for research data repositories. As of January 2021, the service lists over 2620 digital repositories across all scientific disciplines and provides an extensive description of repositories based on a detailed metadata schema (https://doi.org/10.2312/re3.008). A variety of funders, publishers, and scientific organizations around the world refer to re3data within their guidelines and policies, recommending the service to researchers looking for appropriate repositories for storage and discovery of research data. With over 750 entries the field of geosciences is one of the most strongly represented subject groups in the registry. The re3data COREF project (Community Driven Open Reference for Research Data Repositories) started in January 2020 and receives funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for 36 months. With its main focus on the current project the presentation will outline the further professionalization of re3data and the provision of reliable and individualizable descriptions of research data repositories. This includes updates and revisions of the metadata schema, the advancement of the technical infrastructure as well as an enhanced overall (technical) service model concept to embed and connect the service within the research data landscape as a community-driven source and reference for trustworthy repositories. In addition, outcomes from the first re3data COREF stakeholder survey and workshop held in November 2020 will be presented, introducing diverse use cases of the re3data service and examples for the reuse of its metadata. The presentation will address how re3data currently interlinks with external parties and how more advanced options for easier and trustworthy integration of third-party information can be facilitated.
re3data ist ein international anerkanntes Nachweisinstrument fur Forschungsdatenrepositorien, welches derzeit mehr als 2600 Repositorien aus allen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen verzeichnet. Die frei zugangliche Infrastruktur wurde im Rahmen zweier durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geforderter Projekte (2012-2016) entwickelt und fusionierte 2013 mit dem Databib-Dienst der Purdue University. re3data bietet umfassende Beschreibungen der Repositorien auf Grundlage eines detaillierten Metadatenschemas (https://doi.org/10.2312/re3.008) und fordert Open-Science-Praktiken und die Sichtbarkeit von wissenschaftsgetriebenen offenen Infrastrukturen. Wissenschaftliche Communities, Forderorganisationen, Bibliotheken und andere wissenschaftliche Infrastrukturen nutzen re3data und empfehlen den Dienst an Forschende. Das Projekt re3data COREF (Community Driven Open Reference for Research Data Repositories) ist im Januar 2020 gestartet und wird von der DFG fur 36 Monate gefordert. Mit Fokus auf den aktuellen Entwicklungen im Projekt skizziert der Vortrag die Masnahmen zur weiteren Professionalisierung von re3data. Dazu zahlen die Erweiterung des Metadatenschemas, die Weiterentwicklung der technischen Infrastruktur und eine starkere Vernetzung mit der Forschungsdaten-Community. Daruber hinaus werden gemeinsam mit dem Horizon 2020-Projekt FAIRsFAIR und anderen Partnern Losungen erarbeitet, um Forschenden die Identifizierung geeigneter, vertrauenswurdiger und den FAIR-Data-Grundsatzen folgender Repositorien zu erleichtern. Des weiteren werden erste Ergebnisse aus einer Stakeholder-Befragung und einem assoziierten Workshop vorgestellt, die im Rahmen von re3data COREF im November 2020 durchgefuhrt wurden.
