Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant mental health condition that may occur after traumatic events. Given its body- and movement-related features, psychomotor therapy (PMT) may be a valuable treatment option for PTSD. PMT employs body- and movement-oriented activities to reduce psychiatric symptoms, enhance mental health, and improve psychosocial functioning. The potential merits of PMT for individuals with PTSD are reviewed, combining evidence from a systematic literature search and insights from an expert panel. Body-oriented psychotherapy professionals are informed about how PMT can address trauma-related mental health conditions and provide a theoretical background for its implementation. Various interventions tailored to diverse populations within the trauma spectrum are included. Common factors across these interventions, which may underpin PMT's working mechanisms, include developing adaptive interoceptive awareness, regulating arousal, and improving interpersonal functioning. The reviewed literature indicates that PMT may be beneficial in both the diagnosis and treatment of trauma-related conditions.
Swim coaches routinely monitor the performance and performance determining variables of their athletes to optimize training programs in an individual-specific manner with the ultimate aim to swim faster and win races. To interpret the collected data, they require a suitable, and practically useful, conceptual framework, which can be found in the power balance of swimming. For coaches a heuristic model for training and performance optimization based on the power balance has been proposed. We build on this model and illustrate how it can be employed in the training practice using data of an exemplary sub-elite swimmer (700 FINA points), which was collected continuously during two training sessions. Variables that are used in daily swim training practice, such as heart rate (HR), stroke count (SC), stroke rate (SR), and lap time (LT), were measured. By combining external load variables (e.g. LT) and internal load variables (e.g. HR) with technical variables (e.g. SR), the degree to which the swimmer complies with the training program can be determined. The measured values of these variables are presented using a traffic light feedback system indicating the degree of compliance. The traffic light system enables coaches to adjust the program if deemed necessary. It is thus shown how the model and commonly measured variables can assist swim coaches in the design and evaluation of training sessions in their pursuit of personal performance improvement leading to greater athletic success.
Muscle overload injuries in strength training might be prevented by providing personalized feedback about muscle load during a workout. In the present study, a new muscle load feedback application, which monitors and visualizes the loading of specific muscle groups, was developed in collaboration with the fitness company Gymstory. The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of this feedback application in managing muscle load balance, muscle load level, and muscle soreness, and to evaluate how its actual use was experienced. Thirty participants were randomly distributed into ‘control’, ‘partial feedback’, and ‘complete feedback’ groups and monitored for eight workouts using the automatic exercise tracking system of Gymstory. The control group received no feedback, while the partial feedback group received a visualization of their estimated cumulative muscle load after each exercise, and the participants in the complete feedback group received this visualization together with suggestions for the next exercise to target muscle groups that had not been loaded yet. Generalized estimation equations (GEEs) were used to compare muscle load balance and soreness, and a one-way ANOVA was used to compare user experience scores between groups. The complete feedback group showed a significantly better muscle load balance (β = −18.9; 95% CI [−29.3, −8.6]), adhered better to the load suggestion provided by the application (significant interactions), and had higher user experience scores for Attractiveness (p = 0.036), Stimulation (p = 0.031), and Novelty (p = 0.019) than the control group. No significant group differences were found for muscle soreness. Based on these results, it was concluded that personal feedback about muscle load in the form of a muscle body map in combination with exercise suggestions can effectively guide strength training practitioners towards certain load levels and more balanced cumulative muscle loads. This application has potential to be applied in strength training practice as a training tool and may help in preventing muscle overload.
According to the dual-axis model, running styles can be defined by cadence and duty factor, variables that have been associated with running performance, economy and injury risk. To guide runners in exploring different running styles, effective instructions to modulate cadence and duty factor are needed. Such instructions have been established for treadmill running, but not for overground running, during which speed can be varied. In this study, five participants completed eight field training sessions over a 4-week training period with acoustic instructions to modulate cadence, duty factor, and, in combination, running style. Instructions were provided via audio files. Running data were collected with sports watches. Participants’ experiences with guided-exploration training were evaluated with the user experience questionnaire. Data analysis revealed acoustic pacing and verbal instructions to be effective in respectively modulating cadence and duty factor, albeit with co-varying effects on speed and the non-targeted variable (i.e. duty factor or cadence). Combining acoustic pacing and verbal instructions mitigated these co-varying effects considerably, allowing for running-style modulations in intended directions (particularly towards the styles with increased cadence and increased duty factor). User experience of this form of guided-exploration training was overall positive, but could be improved in terms of autonomy (dependability). In conclusion, combining acoustic pacing and verbal instructions for running-style modulation is effective in overground running.
BackgroundResearch is lacking on body-related consequences of sexual abuse in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF), although the prevalence of abuse is high and body- and movement-oriented diagnostics and therapeutics seem warranted for this group.MethodBody experience in adults with MID-BIF who were sexually abused (SA) and were not sexually abused (NSA) was compared using a self-report instrument, the Body Experience Questionnaire-mb, and an instrument to observe non-verbal psychomotor behaviour, the PsyMot-mb.ResultsThe SA group showed significantly higher self-reported body awareness and more observed problems with body acceptance than the NSA group. No significant group differences were found for self-reported body satisfaction and body attitude.ConclusionsAdults with MID-BIF who were sexually abused are more aware of their body signals, but less able to adequately attend to, tolerate, and interpret these signals. Therefore, body- and movement-oriented therapies hold promise for this group.
Introduction: Strength training (ST) athletes are at risk for injuries, especially at their muscles and tendons (59% of all injuries). While the exact causes of these injuries remain largely unknown, the most common reason mentioned by strength training athletes is overload. Muscle overload may be prevented if strength training athletes receive feedback regarding their personal muscle load during their workout. Therefore, a muscle load feedback application was developed in the present study and the user experience of this application was evaluated. Methods: For development of the application, first, an equation to estimate personal muscle load per strength exercise was created, incorporating the number of performed repetitions and weights, the one-repetition max (1RM) of the athlete for that exercise, and the estimated primary and secondary muscle force contributions for that exercise. This equation was implemented in the Gymstory app, along with a visualization of the muscle load in the form of a colored muscle load body map that could show users which muscles they loaded and in what intensity. In addition, a functionality was implemented that provided a list with suggestions for subsequent exercises, targeting muscle groups that had not or little been loaded yet. Thirty healthy participants (varying in age, gender and strength training experience) were randomly allocated over three groups: control (no feedback), ‘partial feedback’ (only the body map) and ‘full feedback’ (body map and next exercise suggestion)’ and tested the Gymstory application for 8 workouts. All participants completed the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) after the last session, from which a score was calculated for the items: ‘attractiveness’, ‘perspicuity’, ‘efficiency’, ‘dependability’, ‘stimulation’, ‘novelty’. Results: The ‘partly feedback group’ typically scored the same or even lower than the control group, with scores between ‘bad’ and ‘above average’. In contrast, the ‘full feedback’ group always scored better than the control group, with the highest score ‘excellent’ for the items: ‘attractiveness’, ‘perspicuity’, ‘stimulation’ and ‘novelty’; the score ‘good’ for ‘efficiency’; and the score ‘above average’ for ‘dependability’. Discussion/Conclusion: Results of the UEQ indicate that the muscle load feedback including a next exercise suggestion is valuable for strength training athletes and seems to have a stimulating effect. Only a muscle load body map appeared not to be as valuable, potentially because it may still be difficult for participants to select proper follow-up exercises, weights and repetitions based on the body map. Future research should investigate the feedback application during a longitudinal study, to investigate if the feedback can aid in preventing muscle overload injuries. Impact/Application to the field (can be 1-2 dot points): The feedback application developed in the present study can be used by strength athletes to gain more insight on their personal muscle load and to receive more stimulation during their workouts. The present study provides a first step towards muscle overload injury prevention in strength training. Background: Body experience is an important facet of psychosocial functioning and health. However, to date no test exists to measure body experience in adults with mild intellectual disability and borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF). We therefore adapted the Body Experience Questionnaire (BEQ) to this group, resulting in the BEQ-mb, and evaluated its usability, comprehensibility, and reliability. Method: The BEQ-mb was developed in five stages: concept development, focus group, verbal reports, pilot testing, and evaluation. Results: The BEQ-mb is applicable in, and comprehensible by, adults with MID-BIF. Internal consistency is good for the total scale and the body awareness and body satisfaction subscales, but low for the body attitude subscale. Test-retest reliability is excellent for the total scale and the subscales. Conclusion: The BEQ-mb unlocks new opportunities for clinical examination and research on body experience. Future research is needed to investigate its structural validity.

CONCLUSIONS Sexual abuse in individuals with bif-mid is associated with a broad range of behavioural and psychological characteristics similar to that of individuals with (above) average iq. Whether sexually abused individuals with bif-mid have similar problems in body experience as sexually abused individuals with (higher than) average iq needs to be investigated.

To assess the efficacy of body- and movement-oriented interventions (BMOIs) in traumatized adults with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of pertinent literature. Four bibliographical databases (PsycINFO, Ovid MEDLINE(R), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) were searched using keywords and text words for trials on BMOIs addressing PTSD. The search included articles published between October 2005 and August 2017. Studies were included if participants were adults suffering from PTSD, if BMOIs were the therapeutic strategy under investigation, and if a psychometrically evaluated standardized outcome measure for PTSD was used. No limitations for control conditions were applied. Hedges' g was computed as the effect size (ES) for the treatment versus control condition. The meta-analysis included 15 studies, which resulted in a mean ES of g = 0.85, 95% CI [0.31, 1.39], with very high heterogeneity, I2 = 91%. After removing one study as outlier, a mean effect size of g = 0.56, 95% CI [0.29, 0.82] (i.e., medium effect), still with considerable heterogeneity, I2 = 57%, was found. BMOIs seem to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, but more research is needed to identify working mechanisms and to determine which types of intervention are most effective for various subgroups of patients.
Background: Sexual abuse in individuals with average IQ or above is associated with a wide range of behavioural, psychological and body-related characteristics. It is unknown whether individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and a history of sexual abuse suffer from similar clinical characteristics. Objective: The aim of the review is to provide an overview of the literature on the clinical characteristics of individuals with ID who have experienced sexual abuse. Method: PubMed, Embase, Psyclnfo, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Web of Sciences were searched for relevant publications using terms related to concepts of "intellectual disability" and "sexual abuse". Two independent reviewers screened and selected articles for inclusion in the study, resulting in seven studies. Results: The studies mostly reported behavioural and psychological characteristics such as aggression, self-injury, or posttraumatic stress, anxiety or depressive symptoms associated with sexual abuse in individuals with ID. None mentioned body-related characteristics. Conclusions: Similar to individuals with average IQ or above, sexual abuse in individuals with ID is associated with a broad range of behavioural and psychological characteristics. Conduct disorders, self-injury, inappropriate sexualised talk and poor feelings of personal safety seem to be more indicative for the ID population. Anxiety, depression and PTSD are prevalent in individuals with and without ID who both have experienced sexual abuse. Whether individuals with ID experience body-related characteristics is unclear.
The purpose of the present study was to identify factors that underlie differences among runners in stride frequency (SF) as a function of running speed. Participants (N = 256; 85.5% males and 14.5% females; 44.1 ± 9.8 years; 181.4 ± 8.4 cm; 75.3 ± 10.6 kg; mean ± SD) shared their wearable data (Garmin Inc). Individual datasets were filtered to obtain representative relationships between stride frequency (SF) and speed per individual, representing in total 16.128 h of data. The group relationship between SF (72.82 to 94.73 strides · min-1) and running speed (V) (from 1.64 to 4.68 m · s-1) was best described with SF = 75.01 + 3.006 V. A generalised linear model with random effects was used to determine variables associated with SF. Variables and their interaction with speed were entered in a stepwise forward procedure. SF was negatively associated with leg length and body mass and an interaction of speed and age indicated that older runners use higher SF at higher speed. Furthermore, run frequency and run duration were positively related to SF. No associations were found with injury incidence, athlete experience or performance. Leg length, body mass, age, run frequency and duration were associated with SFs at given speeds. KEY POINTS On a group level, stride frequency can be described as a linear function of speed: SF (strides · min-1) = 75.01+ 3.006·speed (m · s-1) within the range of 1.64 to 4.68 m · s-1. On an individual level, the SF-speed relation is best described with a second order polynomial. Leg length and body mass were positively related to stride frequency while age was negatively related to stride frequency. Run frequency and run duration were positively related to stride frequency, while running experience, performance and injury incidence were unrelated.
Objective: In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), augmented visual feedback (VF) can improve functional motor performance. Conversely, they appear to rely more on visual information than healthy subjects, which is unfavorable when this information is unreliable. Cortical beta activity is thought to be associated with the need for motor adaptation. We here compared event-related EEG parameters during a whole-body postural weight-shifting task between congruent and incongruent feedback conditions. Methods: Twenty-four patients with PD and fifteen healthy, age- and gender-matched controls performed rhythmic swaying movements. VF was presented in real-time (congruent), delayed (incongruent), or was entirely absent. We estimated source activity in four regions-of-interest and determined motorrelated spectral power and power modulation in alpha and beta frequency bands. Results: For congruent VF no significant differences in cortical activity between the two groups were present. For incongruent VF, the PD group showed significantly higher beta modulation in primary motor cortex, and higher alpha modulation in primary visual cortex. Conclusions: Event-related beta modulation in the motor network and alpha modulation in visual areas discriminated between groups, suggesting altered visuomotor processing in PD patients. Significance: This study finds evidence for increased modulation of alpha/beta activity during perceptual-motor tasks in PD, possibly indicating an unwarranted higher confidence in VF. Mechanical power output is a key performance-determining variable in many cyclic sports. In rowing, instantaneous power output is commonly determined as the dot product of handle force moment and oar angular velocity. The aim of this study was to show that this commonly used proxy is theoretically flawed and to provide an indication of the magnitude of the error. To obtain a consistent dataset, simulations were performed using a previously proposed forward dynamical model. Inputs were previously recorded rower kinematics and horizontal oar angle, at 20 and 32 strokes.min(-1). From simulation outputs, true power output and power output according to the common proxy were calculated. The error when using the common proxy was quantified as the difference between the average power output according to the proxy and the true average power output (P-(residual)), and as the ratio of this difference to the true average power output (ratio(res./rower)). At stroke rate 20, P-(residual) was 27.4W and ratio(res./rower) was 0.143; at stroke rate 32, P-(residual) was 44.3W and ratio(res./rower) was 0.142. Power output in rowing appears to be underestimated when calculated according to the common proxy. Simulations suggest this error to be at least 10% of the true power output.
It has often been shown that performance and learning in movement tasks may be improved by focusing on the effect of the movement in the environment (external focus of attention) instead of the movement itself (internal focus of attention). Nevertheless, most coaching instructions and feedback information given in sports seem to favor an internal focus of attention over an external one. In the present study, we investigated coaches’ instructions and feedback in an instrumental sports action, viz. baseball pitching, in which external targets are readily identifiable, such as the strike area or the catcher’s glove. To this end, we recorded and analyzed the pitching instructions and feedback statements of six baseball coaches given to 70 elite youth baseball pitchers (mean age 15.3 ( SD 1.67) years) during regular pitching training sessions over a training period of four weeks. All instructions and feedback statements were classified according to the type of focus of attention invoked (i.e. internal or external), and a rest category of all other statements. Of the statements promoting a specific focus of attention (717/1699), only 31% (224/717) were classified as external focus of attention statements. Correspondingly, the responses on a questionnaire filled out by the pitchers indicated that they used an internal focus of attention during practice and preferred to receive internally oriented over externally oriented instructions and feedback. The present results show that, even in sports involving clear external targets such as baseball pitching, the internal focus of attention instructions prevails, the experimental evidence in favor of external focus of attention instructions notwithstanding.
Objectives: The study of sequential effects in aiming tasks might shed light on the organization of repetitive motor performances over time. To date, investigations of such effects in sports have been limited and yielded mixed results. Given the relatively short time intervals between successive attempts, and the absence of defensive interventions, dart throwing provides a potentially fruitful testing ground for examining the presence of sequential performance effects in the motor domain. Methods and Results: A total of 80 competitive darts matches of 10 of the world’s best players were scored from publicly available video footage in terms of sequences of hits and misses of triple 20. In darts, throws are organized in legs, i.e., a rapid succession of three throws by the same player, allowing us to investigate various transitions in performance (throw 1 → 2, 2 → 3, and 3 → 1). The resulting binary sequences were analyzed statistically in terms of independence and stationarity. Across players significant statistical evidence was found for sequential dependence from the first throw in a leg to the second throw, but not for the other transitions. As regards to stationarity, a significant decline in performance was observed in the course of the match. Conclusions: In professional darts, evidence can be found for both sequential dependence as well as for non-stationarity, implying that performance does not, or at least not always, constitute a stationary random independent process. More research is needed on the motor control mechanisms underlying the observed carry-over effects within triplets as well as the possible causes of non-stationarity.
This paper evaluates a new and adaptive real-time cadence detection algorithm (CDA) for unconstrained sensor placement during walking and running. Conventional correlation procedures, dependent on sensor position and orientation, may alternately detect either steps or strides and consequently suffer from false negatives or positives. To overcome this limitation, the CDA validates correlation peaks as strides using the Sylvester's criterion (SC). This paper compares the CDA with conventional correlation methods. 22 volunteers completed 7 different circuits (approx. 140 m) at three gaits-speeds: walking (1.5 m s(-1)), running (3.4 m s(-1)), and sprinting (5.2 and 5.7 m s(-1)), disturbed by various gait-related activities. The algorithm was simultaneously evaluated for 10 different sensor positions. Reference strides were obtained from a foot sensor using a dedicated offline algorithm. The described algorithm resulted in consistent numbers of true positives (85.6-100.0%) and false positives (0.0-2.9%) and showed to be consistently accurate for cadence feedback across all circuits, subjects and sensors (mean SD: 98.9 +/- 0.2%), compared to conventional cross-correlation (87.3 +/- 13.5%), biased (73.0 +/- 16.2) and unbiased (82.2 +/- 20.6) autocorrelation procedures. This study shows that the SC significantly improves cadence detection, resulting in robust results for various gaits, subjects and sensor positions. (C) 2018 IPEM. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: Athletes require feedback in order to comply with prescribed training programs designed to optimize their performance. In rowing, current feedback parameters on intensity are inaccurate. Mechanical power output is a suitable objective measure for training intensity, but due to movement restrictions related to crew rowing, it is uncertain whether crew rowers are able to adjust their intensity based on power-output feedback. The authors examined whether rowers improve compliance with prescribed power-output targets when visual real-time feedback on power output is provided in addition to commonly used feedback.Methods: A total of 16 crew rowers rowed in 3 training sessions. During the first 2 sessions, they received commonly used feedback, followed by a session with additional power-output feedback. Targets were set by their coaches before the experiment. Compliance was operationalized as accuracy (absolute difference between target and delivered power output) and consistency (high- and low-frequency variations in delivered power output). Results: Multilevel analyses indicated that accuracy and low- frequency variations improved by, respectively, 65% (P > .001) and 32% (P = .024) when additional feedback was provided. Conclusion: Compliance with power-output targets improved when crew rowers received additional feedback on power output. Two additional observations were made during the study that highlighted the relevance of power-output feedback for practice: There was a marked discrepancy between the prescribed targets and the actually delivered power output by the rowers, and coaches had difficulties perceiving improvements in rowers' compliance with power-output targets.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with an increased risk of physical disorders as a consequence of chronic stress reactions and adverse lifestyle behaviours. In addition, various other physical signs and symptoms may be present, as well as problems with emotional awareness, such as alexithymia, which may impede verbal information processing. Therefore, a psychomotor diagnostic instrument (PMDI) is developed, based on non-verbal information to contribute to a careful and reliable diagnostic procedure. The PDMI is designed to identify specific goals for body and movement oriented treatments of PTSD. It consists of a manual with an assessment procedure, guidelines for scoring items and for the calculation of cluster scores based on item scores. In this paper, the PMDI and its development are discussed, and illustrated by brief vignettes.
