Measurements of the tensor and vector spin observables C(0,NN,0,0), C(0,SS,0,0), and C(0,N,0,0), in p-d elastic scattering at 600, 800, and 1000 MeV equivalent proton bombarding energy, are reported. The data were taken in the range 0.1<-t<1.2 (GeV/c${)}^{2}$. The experiment employed a polarized deuteron beam with tensor and vector components of \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.75 and \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.25, respectively, a liquid hydrogen target, and a single arm magnetic spectrometer. The tensor and vector spin parameters C(0,N,0,0) and C(0,NN,0,0) were extracted from the data with beam polarization normal to the scattering plane. The observable C(0,SS,0,0) was obtained by precessing the deuteron polarization into the scattering plane. Comparison of the data with the predictions of a relativistic multiple scattering theory is made.
In this paper, results are presented from a study of the hadronic final states in ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ annihilation at 29 GeV. The data were obtained with the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) at the SLAC PEP ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ colliding-beam facility. The results are based on 6342 selected events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$. The distributions of the events in sphericity (S), thrust (T), and aplanarity (A) are given and compared to other ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ data in the same energy range. We measure 〈S〉=0.130\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010 and 〈1-T〉=0.100\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002. The sphericity distribution is compared to sphericity measurements made for beam jets in hadronic collisions as well as jets studied in neutrino scattering. The data sample is further reduced to 4371 events with the two-jet selections, S\ensuremath{\le}0.25 and A\ensuremath{\le}0.1. The single-particle distributions in the longitudinal and transverse directions are given. For low values of the momentum fraction (z=2p/W), the invariant distribution shows a maximum at z\ensuremath{\sim}0.06, consistent with a QCD expectation. The data at high Feynman x (${\mathit{x}}_{\mathit{F}}$) show distribution consistent with being dominated by a (1-${\mathit{x}}_{\mathit{f}}$${)}^{2}$ variation for the leading quark-meson transition. The rapidity distribution shows a shallow central minimum with a height (1/${\mathit{N}}_{\mathrm{ev}}$${\mathit{dN}}^{\mathrm{h}}$/dY${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Vert}}}_{\mathrm{Y}=0}$=2.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07. The mean charged multiplicity is measured to be 〈${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{ch}}$〉=13.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6. The mean transverse momentum relative to the thrust axis 〈${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}$〉 rises as a function of z to a value of 0.70\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02 GeV/c for z\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.3. The distributions are compared to those measured in other reactions.
During the initial data run with the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) at SLAC PEP, an integrated luminosity of 19.6 p${\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV was accumulated. The data on Bhabha scattering and muon pair production are compared with the predictions of QED and the standard model of electroweak interactions. The measured forward-backward charge asymmetry in the angular distribution of muon pairs is -8.4%\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.3%. A comparison between the data and theoretical predictions places limits on alternative descriptions of leptons and their interactions. The existence of heavy electronlike or photonlike objects that alter the structure of the QED vertices or modify the propagator are studied in terms of the QED cutoff parameters. The Bhabha-scattering results give a lower limit on a massive photon and upper limits on the effective size of the electron of ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{+}>121$ GeV and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\ensuremath{-}}>118$ GeV at the 95% confidence level. Muon pair production yields ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{+}>172$ GeV and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\ensuremath{-}}>172$ GeV. If electrons have substructure, the magnitude and character of the couplings of the leptonic constituents affects the Bhabha-scattering angular distributions to such an extent that limits on the order of a TeV can be extracted on the effective interaction length of the components. For models in which the constituents interact with vector couplings of strength $\frac{{g}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}}\ensuremath{\sim}1$, the energy scale ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\mathrm{VV}}$ for the contact interaction is measured to be greater than 1419.0 GeV at the 95% confidence level. We set limits on the production of supersymmetric scalar electrons through $s$-channel single-photon annihilation and $t$-channel inelastic scattering. Using events with two noncollinear electrons and no other charged or observed neutral particles in the final state, we see one event which is consistent with a simple supersymmetric model but which is also consistent with QED. This allows us to exclude the scalar electron to 95% confidence level in the mass range 1.8 to 14.2 GeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$.
Inc1usive production of (D, D ) and D' mesons have been observed in e+e annihilation at 29 QeV.The signaIs correspond to R values of R(D +D ) = 3.25+1.2and R(D++D ) = 1.35+ 0.6.D*' production is also observed via the process D*+-D 7I' and its charge conjugate.The D and D* production rates are compared.
%e have observed inclusive production of D and D+ mesons, and their charge conju- gates, in e+e annihilation at 29 GeV on the basis of a data sample of 106 pb '.These sig- nals correspond to R values of R(DO+Do) =1.8 +0.5 and R(D++D ) =1. 2 +0.4.Tak- ing the D+ and D data together, we measure a charge asymmetry of A = -0.08 +0.12 for charmed quarks.A comparison of R(D+D) with R(D'+D') obtained via the process D" + Don+ gives a D/D' ratio of 1. 0+oo~3, indicating that direct D" production dominates over direct D production.
Deuteron vector and tensor asymmetries were measured for the first time in p‐D↘ elastic scattering at 800 MeV in −t range between .02 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. Considerable sensitivity of the data to the multiple scattering mechanism and the form of the N‐N amplitude was found.
We report the results of the first measurement of the deuteron tensor and vector asymmetries in p-d elastic scattering at 600 MeV proton kinetic energy.
Deuteron tensor and vector analyzing powers have been measured for the first time in p-d elastic scattering at 800 MeV proton laboratory energy for a -t range between 0.032 and 1.038 (GeV/c)2. The data provide a very sensitive test of the multiple scattering theory at intermediate energies. The inclusion of the noneikonal correction in the Glauber diffraction theory is essential in the description of the data, especially for -t ⪆0.2 (GeV/c2), where discrepancies of up to 150% are observed with the theory based on the eikonal approximation.
The large-angle analyzing power $A$ in proton-neutron elastic scattering at 2, 3, and 6 GeV/c with use of the polarized proton beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron and a liquid deuterium target have been measured. The measurements, the first at high energy, show that $A$ is large (20-40%) and negative over much of the angular range and shows no decrease with incident energy, unlike the earlier data at smaller angles.
The depolarization parameter for $\mathrm{pp}$ inclusive scattering at an incident momentum of 6 GeV/c was measured. The $D$ parameter for inclusive scattering indicates the dominance of natural-parity exchange at small $t$, except in the case of ${N}^{*}(1232)$ production, where $\ensuremath{\pi}$ exchange is more important. $D$ for elastic scattering has also been measured. This parameter shows a small decrease from unity with increasing momentum transfer.
A comprehensive measurement of the differential cross section for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p$ and $\mathrm{pp}$ elastic scattering has been made at large center-of-mass angles. ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and $\mathrm{pp}$ scattering were measured with incident laboratory momenta ranging from 2 to 9.5 GeV/c. ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p$ scattering was measured with momenta from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c. Scattering angles were in the range $\ensuremath{-}0.3\ensuremath{\lesssim}{cos\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.4$. The results of the experiment are compared to constituent models and statistical models.
Abstract Large deuteron vector and tensor asymmetries have been measured for the first time at imtermediate energies. We have used a 2 GeV polarized deuteron beam whose tensor and vector components were 0.75 and 0.25, respectively. The tensor and vector quantities P yy and P yy were extracted from data obtained with the beam polarization normal to the scattering plane, and P xx was obtained when the polarization was precessed into the scattering plane. Analysis of the data using multiple scattering theory demonstrates the considerable sensitivity of the data to the quadrupole form factor of the deuteron and to the double spin flip components of the NN amplitudes.
We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for $p$-$^{4}\mathrm{He}$ elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near $\ensuremath{-}t=0.25$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$ which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed.NUCLEAR REACTIONS elastic scattering, $p$-$^{4}\mathrm{He}$; GeV energies; measured differential cross section; measured polarization; comparison with theory.
New results from the Argonne ZGS on the scattering asymmetries of inclusively produced pions are presented. The preliminary data is for the reaction pup-arrow..--> pi../sup -/+X near X=0 for a Pt range extending past 1.0 GeV/c.
Measurements are reported of the spherical tensor component ${t}_{20}$ for 1.0-, 0.8-, and 0.4-GeV equivalent proton bombarding energies for elastic $p\ensuremath{-}d$ scattering between 155\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}-175\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. They are very close to zero in disagreement with the predictions of nucleon exchange models, including the Kerman-Kisslinger model with ${N}^{*}$ components in the deuteron wave function. The experiment was performed with a vector- and tensor-polarized deuteron beam scattered from a liquid hydrogen target.

We have measured ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p$ and $\mathrm{pp}$ elastic differential cross sections in the range $|{cos\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}|<0.35$ for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and $\mathrm{pp}$ and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p$. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle $\ensuremath{\pi}p$ differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of $s$. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.
