SummaryThe extended BBCH scale is a system for a uniform coding of phenologicaliy similar growth stages of all mono‐ and dicotyledonous plant species, based on the well known cereal code of Zadoks et al. (1974). The BBCH key is it decimal system, with 10 principal growth stages and up to 10 secondary ones, starting with seed germination, sprouting of perennials, progressing through leaf production and extension growth to flowering and senescence. Therefore, it can also be a suitable tool to define the growth stages of different weed species. To encourage further use of the BBCH scale in weed research, definitions of the codes have been more closely adapted to weeds. Possible problems are discussed and guidelines for correct use are given.

SummaryA universal scale (to be known as the BBCH scale) using a decimal code for the description of the growth stages of most agricultural crops and weeds is proposed. The scale and codes are based on the well‐known Zadoks code for cereals.Developmentally similar growth stages of different crops are given the same codes. The general scale provides a framework within which more specific scales for individual crops may be constructed. The uniformity of the scale makes it easy to remember and use in agricultural practice and simplifies storage and retrieval in a computer system.A description of the general scale is given followed by specific scales for cereals, rice, maize, oilseed rape, field beans, peas and sunflower. Comparisons with scales currently in use are given where appropriate.
Atraves do novo codigo BBCH, em sua forma generalizada, coloca-se a disposicao uma escala decimal que permite a codificacao uniforme dos estadios de desenvolvimento fenologicamente identicos das plantas, abrangendo as mais variadas especies cultivadas e silvestres. Os macro- e micro-estadios baseiam-se, conscientemente, na escala para cereais de Zadoks et al. (1974), com o objetivo de e evitar maiores alteracoes neste sistema de codificacao ha muito utilizado. Logicamente, este tipo de escala nao permite a reproducao detalhada de todos os estadios especificos de cada tipo de planta, mas elaboraram-se as definicoes de tal maneira generalizadas, que o uso do codigo BBCH sera possivel universalmente. Desta maneira, o codigo BBCH representa uma contribuicao importante para a unificacao e racionalizacao dos sistemas de pesquisa na agricultura. Para facilitar ainda mais a sua aplicabilidade e utilidade na pratica, tenciona-se criar e publicar, em breve, codigos especificos congruentes para as mais importantes culturas e grupos de plantas.
