The psychological well-being of edentulous patients before and after receiving complete dentures, focusing on parameters such as confidence in smiling, ability to eat and pronunciation is of interest. Data shows substantial improvements in all assessed parameters are found. Confidence in smiling and eating showed the highest levels of improvement, while pronunciation difficulties significantly decreased. Thus, the transformative impact of complete dentures on enhancing both oral function and overall psychosocial well-being is highlighted.
Satisfaction levels in edentulous patients before and after receiving conventional complete dentures, focusing on smile confidence, eating comfort and pronunciation is of interest. Hence, a cross-sectional analysis of 100 patients (aged 52–75 years) using a structured questionnaire was completed to assess post-treatment improvements. Confidence in smiling increased from 8% to 62%, while eating comfort and pronunciation improved in 67% and 58% of patients, respectively. Thus, transformative impact of complete dentures on both functionality and psychosocial well-being is highlighted. Therefore, comprehensive care and patient education are essential to optimizing treatment outcomes.
Background: Root canal cleanliness is crucial to the success of endodontic treatment, as residual debris can harbor bacteria that may cause reinfection. Laser-assisted irrigation (LAI) has emerged as a potential method to enhance debris removal within the complex anatomy of the root canal system. This study evaluates the efficacy of LAI in removing debris from root canals compared to conventional irrigation techniques. Materials and Methods: Forty single-rooted mandibular premolars were selected and randomly divided into two groups of 20 teeth each. Group 1 was treated using conventional irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (5.25%), while Group 2 received LAI with the same irrigant. Both groups used EDTA as a final rinse. The debris remaining in the canals was evaluated under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at three levels: coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Debris levels were quantified using a 4-point scale (0 = no debris; 1 = minimal debris; 2 = moderate debris; 3 = heavy debris). Results: Group 2 (LAI) showed a statistically significant reduction in debris compared to Group 1 (conventional irrigation) at all three canal levels (P < .05). Mean debris scores for Group 1 were 2.3 (coronal), 2.6 (middle), and 3.1 (apical), while Group 2 recorded scores of 1.2 (coronal), 1.4 (middle), and 2.0 (apical). LAI was particularly effective in the coronal and middle thirds, with a noticeable reduction in debris at the apical third as well, though less pronounced. Conclusion: Laser-assisted irrigation significantly enhances debris removal from root canals compared to conventional methods, especially in the coronal and middle thirds. Incorporating LAI may improve the overall success of endodontic treatment by reducing bacterial load and enhancing root canal cleanliness.

Conclusion: With the ability to provide telehealth services, personalized medical advice, and remote monitoring, clinical applications have drastically improved patient outcomes and reduced costs. The incorporation of these applications into daily life not only improves convenience and efficiency but also increases engagement and productivity in a variety of fields.
BACKGROUND:Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterized by pain and dysfunction affecting the temporomandibular joints and surrounding muscles. TMD prevalence in the general population is estimated at 5-12%, with psychological factors like anxiety and depression contributing to its onset and progression. TMD's impact extends to various health conditions and psychological distress. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated musculoskeletal pain, with studies indicating a heightened prevalence of TMD among those affected. OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and impact of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in individuals affected by COVID-19 in Central India. MATERIAL AND METHODS:This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in Central India from January to April 2024 and included 400 patients attending the hospital OPD. Participants were selected via convenience sampling, with a focus on those affected by COVID-19. Data was collected through a pre-tested, self-administered structured questionnaire, validated through expert consultation and a pilot study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21.0, assessing data distribution and significance. RESULTS:Among participants, 24.5% were aged 56 years or above, with 120 (30%) diagnosed with TMD. Of these, 46.67% were diagnosed post-COVID, with jaw pain being a prominent symptom. The pandemic worsened symptoms for 55.56% of participants, with many attributing this to increased stress. A significant number of participants sought medical help during the pandemic, but satisfaction with treatment options was low. Challenges such as increased pain and difficulty eating were reported, and most participants faced additional health issues post-COVID. CONCLUSIONS:The study reveals that TMD diagnosis and symptoms were notably affected by COVID-19, with increased pain and functional challenges reported. Despite seeking treatment, participants expressed dissatisfaction with available options, highlighting need for enhanced management and support strategies for TMD in the context of post-COVID health challenges.
AIM:The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the impact strength of conventional acrylic resin, high-impact acrylic resin, high-impact acrylic resin reinforced with silver nanoparticles, and high-impact acrylic resin reinforced with a zirconium oxide powder.MATERIALS AND METHODS:A total of 60 samples were prepared of dimensions 60 mm length × 7 mm width × 4 mm thickness to test impact strength. Machined stainless steel dies of the same dimension were used to form molds for the fabrication of these samples. Of 60 samples, 15 samples were prepared each from conventional acrylic resin (Group A1), high-impact acrylic resin (Group A2), acrylic resin reinforced with silver nanoparticles (Group A3), and acrylic resin reinforced with zirconium oxide powder (Group A4). Izod-Charpy pendulum impact testing machine was used.RESULTS:The impact strength of group A1 was in the range of 2.83-3.30 kJ/m2 (M = 3.12 kJ/m2, SD = 0.16), group A2 was in range of 5.10-5.78 kJ/m2 (M = 5.51 kJ/m2, SD = 0.18), group A3 was in range 3.18-3.56 kJ/m2 (M = 3.37 kJ/m2, SD = 0.11), and group A4 was in range 7.18-7.78 kJ/m2 (M = 7.5 kJ/m2, SD = 0.18). Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA and t-test revealed significant differences (p < 0.001).CONCLUSION:High-impact acrylic resin reinforced with zirconium oxide powder has the highest impact strength.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:This research sheds light on the usefulness of novel filler materials in clinical prosthodontics.
Context: Residual ridge resorption(RRR) affect the patient’s satisfaction with complete denture by decreasing the sulcus / vestibular depth, Aims: The aim of this study is to find the correlation between difference in sulcus / vestibular depth by intraoral examination and on master cast/ old denture with patient’s satisfaction from complete denture. Settings and Design: The study included old denture wearer and complete denture prosthesis made by different operators in the college. Methods and Material: The vestibular sulcus depths at 7 different sites in edentulous maxilla and 12 different sites in edentulous mandible and respective flange height in maxillary and mandibular denture were measured. Prevalidated questionnaire was used to measure the satisfaction of patients with denture. Statistical analysis used: Pearson correlation was done to find the correlation between satisfaction score and difference in sulcus / vestibular depth. Results: The difference in sulcus depth in maxilla with maxillary cast and mandible with mandibular master cast/ denture showed medium to large negative correlation with p value 0.01. The increase in difference will lead to decrease in satisfaction score of patients.
Background: One of the main purposes of root canal treatment is the complete debridement of root canals. Regardless of the instrumentation technique used 35% or more of the root canal surfaces have been observed to remain uninstrumented. To remove debris and address these uninstrumented surfaces, it is necessary to copiously irrigate the root canal. Many adjuncts have also been developed and being used in an effort to improve the delivery and effectiveness of these irrigants. Although much research have been conducted on different root canal treatment regime and irrigants used in dentistry, only a little data can be found on the widespread practice or acceptance of such methods.Aims and Objectives: The purpose of this survey was therefore to ascertain the current trends in the use of root canal irrigants and irrigation protocol followed by Endodontists and Postgraduate students across Central India (Madhya Pradesh).Material and Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted and participants were asked to fill in responses to some questions regarding their preferences for root canal irrigation like irrigant selection, irrigant concentration, technique used for delivery and activation of irrigants, etc.Results: The majority of the respondents considered both irrigations as well as instrumentation to be of equal importance. Also, the majority of respondents prefer full-strength sodium hypochlorite (5.25%) while only a few have been found to use its lower concentration (3%).Conclusion: It is essential for future prospects to get an awareness of the properties and actions of irrigants and incorporate them into practice for executing a successful endodontic treatment.
Oral carcinogenesis is known as multifactorial process which engaged plentiful genetic events that transform normal activity of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. It is observed that aggregation of genetic alterations is the ground for advancement of a normal cell to cancer cells, which is known as a multi-step carcinogenesis. Because of this event, growth factor production increases as well as increase in total of receptors on cell surface and increased intracellular signal messengers. The present review scrutinize the existing documentation in the literature related to the oral squamous cell carcinoma. English language articles were searched in various databases such as Pubmed, Scopus, Science direct and Google scholar. The keyword used for searching are “oral squamous cell carcinoma”, “Genetics and Oral squamous cell carcinoma”,“Molecular mechanism in oral squamous cell carcinoma”. The present review spotlights on understanding the molecular mechanism and the genetic factors which is responsible for alteration in the cell which leads to oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Biomaterials are the materials that are used for the restoration and reorganization of various tissues as well as organs. Some of the common materials presently used are organic, metallic, and composites. To increase the biocompatibility of these materials, some types of coatings are regularly applied. Hydroxyapatite is one of the materials which is mostly used for coating these materials. Hydroxyapatite acquires the same structural and chemical characteristics as human bone. In the present review, we discussed the various aspects of hydroxyapatite coatings that consist of rationale, coating process, various techniques, and coating failures.
Introduction :Interglobular dentin is the area of hypomineralized or unmineralized denitn. Interglobular dentin is located at various region in teeth. Aim : To identify the most common location of interglobular dentin in ground section of teeth. Settings and Design : the study comprised of 69 extracted tooth. Materials and Method: The study comprised of 69 extracted teeth. Ground sections of all 69 extracted teeth were prepared with the help of Arkansas stone, mounted on glass slide with the help of DPX and then observed under routine microscope by 2 observers. Results: The most common location of interglobular dentin is cervical third Conclusion: The interglobular dentin is more commonly seen in cervical third portion of crown as well as root in males and females.
Background Forensic odontology deals with age, sex, and race determination of the deceased at crime scenes, disasters, or natural calamities. Studies regarding the role of secondary dentin in age estimation have been documented on a several occasions in the literature but use of secondary dentin in gender predilection has not yet been documented. So, the present study was aimed at using the secondary dentin as a diagnostic tool in gender predilection. Materials and Methods The study included a total of 20 samples (10 males and 10 females). Extracted teeth were collected and placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution. The sections were ground on Arkansas stone until the appropriate thickness of the ground sections was achieved. The freshly prepared ground section was mounted on a slide using DPX mounting media. Ground sections were visualized under a microscope and the thickness of secondary dentine was measured using the image analysis software. Results The data were collected and subjected to group statistics. The secondary dentin thickness of all the samples, males and females, was measured. It was observed in our study that the mean thickness of secondary dentin was more in male samples (0.2970) with the standard deviation of 0.01494, as compared with that of females where the mean thickness was found to be 0.1970 with the standard deviation of 0.02058. Conclusion This study has shown that variation in secondary dentin thickness does exist between male and female groups. This criterion can be considered as an aid for gender determination in the future.
AbstractThe accurate examination of oral cavity may acknowledge findings that demonstrate the presence of underlying systemic, which helps in earlier diagnosis as well as treatment. The oral tissues are accountable to damage as a disease consequence that primarily affects other body systems. Various systemic diseases show oral manifestation. Some of these oral conditions include oral ulcers, caries, dry mouth, gingival bleeding, and gingival hypertrophy. This review article is prepared to make general physicians as well as dentist aware about systemic disorders or conditions that show dental or oral manifestation.
Background: Good adhesive bonding of restorative materials to cavity walls minimizing microleakage is an important criterion for the performance and longevity of a restoration in the oral cavity. The present study is aimed to compare the microleakage among newer composite materials. Materials and Methods: Forty-five extracted healthy premolars were collected; standard Class II cavities were prepared. They were randomly divided into three groups of 15 teeth each. The groups were made based on the different composite restorative materials used for restoration. Group A consisted of conventional microfilled composite resin restorations, and Group B was posterior nanocomposite resin. Group C was restored using ORMOCER – Admira. After completion of restorations, all teeth were subjected to thermocycling at 5° C, 37° C, and 55° C for 250 cycles. Later, all samples were immersed into 50% silver nitrate dye group wise for for 4 hours (h), and teeth were sectioned buccolingually. Sectioned teeth were observed under a stereomicroscope for the evaluation of microleakage. ANOVA and unpaired t-tests were used for statistical analysis. The significance level was at set P < 0.001. Results: The results of this study showed that Group C (ORMOCER – Admira) presented with the least microleakage followed by Group B (Tetric N-Ceram) followed by Group A (Tetric Ceram). Conclusions: Overall ORMOCER – Admira performed better than the other two composite materials with the least microleakage.
Substance abuse is an important health problem throughout the world including India, but prevalence and pattern of abuse varies from country to country and in different types of population. Slums have their own social and economic problems so that substance abuse may be different in this population and might be related with these problems. The aim of the present study was to study the prevalence and pattern substances in slum population. Prakash Chandra Sethi Nagar slum area of Indore district was selected for the purpose of this study. In first phase of the study, first a camp was organized to sensitize local leaders, key persons, and local inhabitants about drug abuse at Chandra Prakash Sethi Nagar. After that basic information was gathered with the key persons in Chandra Prakash Sethi Nagar. In second phase by house-to-house survey, all members of the family were interviewed in detail and information was recorded on semi-structured proforma. We observed prevalence rate of 560/1000 populations, 78.2% were males, 28.2% were females, and two-third abusers were laborers (72%). In order of frequency, tobacco was the most common substance abused in 53.9% population followed by gutka (nontobacco pan masala). Other drugs in order of frequency were alcohol 46.5%, cannabis 8.9%, opiates 4.9%, sedative and hypnotic 2.0%, solvents 1.0%, and cocaine in 0.1%. Slum population has higher prevalence rates than general population.
