Overly detailed and technical descriptions for IT positions, together with inconsistent occupation identifiers, cause companies to pass on qualified candidates who do not match every requirement, while job seekers fail to identify roles matching their skill sets. To address this matching problem, we analyzed 15,000+ IT job postings to create a list of 41 IT occupations, called ITOcc List. Leveraging this list will enable companies to attract a wider range of qualified candidates, and job seekers to more easily identify relevant openings.
Coproduction is defined as collaboration between an organization and the consumer in the design, marketing, or delivery of goods or services, which the consumer ultimately utilizes. While coproduction has existed for decades, the transition from a full-service to a coproduction environment, if not handled correctly, can be met with apprehension, resistance, or resentment by the consumer. The impact of coproduction resentment has received limited attention in information systems research. This study highlights the importance of including coproduction in the nomological net and explores the impact of coproduction resentment on continuance intention within the context of self-service technology, in particular self-checkout. A sample of 309 responses from individuals in the United States was collected using a survey instrument and crowdsourcing. Utilizing the IS continuance model as the theoretical lens, results indicate that coproduction resentment has a negative impact on both consumer satisfaction and continuance intention.
The worldwide big data and analytics investment market continues to grow, with projections indicating strong compound annual growth rates over the next decade. To achieve true competitive advantage from business intelligence and data analytics, organizations must control how these investments are being integrated into the culture of the organization. Analytics integration is dependent on employees displaying a comprehensive set of skills that extends beyond technical competencies. This qualitative research identifies specific personal, interpersonal, and communication skills critical for effective interaction among analytics specialists and corporate decision makers. In applying these skills, analytics professionals can shift the decision culture within the organization to engage a data-informed approach to decision making.
Traditional brick-and-mortar retailers face increasing competitive pressure from online alternatives. One promising technology to help retailers cope with the ongoing retail crisis is mobile self-checkout systems (MSCOS). However, there have been issues with MSCOS implementation. This study aims at gaining a better understanding of consumer needs related to MSCOS. Using diffusion of innovation as its theoretical lens, we explore the impact of relative advantage, trialability, compatibility, and ease of use on MSCOS adoption. Since MSCOS involves financial transactions, we also consider the impact of perceived privacy, accuracy, and security. A crowdsourcing data collection resulted in 302 responses from US respondents. Findings support that relative advantage, trialability, and perceived security positively affect usage intention. Moreover, compatibility and ease of use positively affect relative advantage, and perceived privacy and accuracy positively affect perceived security. Los comercios al por menor tradicionales (con establecimientos fisicos) se enfrentan a la creciente presion competitiva de las alternativas en linea. Una tecnologia prometedora para ayudar a los minoristas a hacer frente a la actual crisis de su sector son los sistemas moviles de pago automatico (MSCOS, por sus siglas en ingles). Sin embargo, la implantacion de los MSCOS no ha estado exenta de problemas. El objetivo de este estudio es conocer mejor las necesidades de los consumidores relacionadas con los MSCOS. Mediante la utilizacion de la difusion de la innovacion como prisma teorico, estudiamos el impacto de la ventaja relativa, la capacidad de prueba, la compatibilidad y la facilidad de uso con respecto a la adopcion de los MSCOS. Dado que los MSCOS implican transacciones financieras, analizamos asimismo el impacto de la privacidad, la precision y la seguridad percibidas. Mediante una recopilacion externa de datos se obtuvieron 302 respuestas de encuestados estadounidenses. Los resultados respaldan que la ventaja relativa, la capacidad de prueba y la seguridad percibida afectan positivamente a la intencion de uso. Ademas, la compatibilidad y la facilidad de uso afectan positivamente a la ventaja relativa, y la privacidad y la precision percibidas afectan positivamente a la seguridad percibida. Self-service technologies allow organizations to shift work from employees to the consumer, creating a coproduction environment where the consumer is an active participant in the delivery of a service, which they ultimately consume. While these technologies can have benefits for both consumers and the organizations, they can also present challenges (e.g., value erosion, feelings of coercion) that may give rise to consumer resentment. This study, using the theory of reasoned action as its theoretical lens, is one of the first in information systems to explore coproduction resentment. In particular, this study investigates the coproduction resentment within the context of self-checkout continuance intention. The study also investigates the effect of technology anxiety, fear of confrontation due to misuse, and technology-driven job losses on coproduction resentment. The study found support for the seven proposed hypotheses.
The number of brick and mortar retailers that have closed their doors or filed bankruptcy is staggering and crosses virtually every retail segment. As consumer demographics evolve and more consumers move to online purchasing, the question arises as to what role brick and mortar stores will play in the future. This pressure has driven retailers to employ new technology aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing the consumer's experience. This study, using diffusion of innovation as its theoretical lens, explores the impact of consumer confusion on the adoption of mobile self-checkout (MSCO) technology. A total of 217 responses were collected using crowdsourcing from respondents residing in the United States. Findings indicate that consumer confusion impacts usage intention through relative advantage (reducing consumer confusion) and compatibility. Relative advantage (saving time) positively impacts compatibility. Trialability and compatibility directly impact MSCO usage intention.
Industry requires employees with strong project management and leadership skills, but for students to develop and improve, they need the opportunity to practice the concepts, techniques, and skills described in the typical lecture. An exploratory case study was conducted at a metropolitan commuter campus to determine if assigning graduate MIS students as project managers for undergraduate MIS student teams working on experientiallearning projects in a systems analysis course would result in an effective learning environment. The course integration delivered a positive outcome for clients, undergraduate students, and graduate students. Clients received projects that met requirements. Undergraduates received higher-quality grade assessments when compared to prior semesters. Graduate students received a hands-on project management experience within the course and were observed to improve in the areas of leadership, communication, relationship development, and team building; as well as the more traditional “hard” technical skills. Recommendations to improve future course integration were developed.
Information System's (IS) requirements inadequacy and volatility are major IS project risks leading to failed, over budget, or over schedule projects. Within requirements determination, an area of focus for the inadequacy and volatility issue is the application domain (i.e., business domain). One step towards better requirements determination methods, techniques, and tools for the application domain would be a theoretically-grounded model for specification emergence and evolution. This paper presents a model of specification emergence and evolution that is confirmed using a case study.
Application and project domain specifications are an important aspect of Information Systems (IS) development. Observations of over thirty IS projects suggest dimly perceived structural patterns in specifications that are unaccounted for in research and practice. This investigation utilizes a theory building with case studies methodology to elucidate some of these patterns. As prerequisites to pattern identification, this investigation identified a theoretically and empirically grounded static model of specification that establishes specification context and structure and a theoretically and empirically grounded dynamic model of specification that establishes the principles of specification emergence and evolution. Using these models as a foundation, this investigation synthesized a specification pattern model from four research disciplines and confirmed the specification pattern model for physical objects in case data. An additional specification pattern model for physical actions was also identified in the case data. The confirmation process found that the physical object and action models could not be extended to abstract informational objects or actions. The findings of this investigation answer a call for research of the application domain, advance understanding of IS requirements inadequacy and volatility, advance ontological research to include a mechanism to integrate static and dynamic dimensions, and provides avenues of study to improve understanding of the structure and dynamics governing stakeholder collaboration. In addition, this investigation suggests criteria to judge, as well as theories, models, and patterns for, a class of IS that is persistently adaptive.
This report provides a guide for achieving a basic service model for traffic signal management and operations. The basic service model is based on simply stated and defensible operational objectives that consider the staffing level, expertise and priorities of the responsible agency. The report includes a Literature Review, which provides a review of the National Traffic Signal Report Card and Self-Assessment, case studies based on agency archetypes that provide an understanding of how agencies deliver traffic signal management services based on their resources and interviews with acknowledged leaders providing support for the basic service concept. A discussion of signal timing versatility in support of the role it plays in providing good basic service is included in the Appendix.

Infrastructure systems permeate society at both the personal and business levels. These systems are taken for granted, but the implications of system breakdowns are staggering and directly impact our national competitiveness, having both immediate consequences and long lasting effects on the local, regional and national economies. Many of the infrastructure systems found in the United States have been in place far beyond their design lives. How does an organization manage these aging assets given constrained resources?
Enterprise architecture enables strategic alignment through creation of a unified business and IS view of the target state of the business. Using a design science approach, this paper proposes an intent-based technique as an extension to existing modeling techniques for strategic alignment. The proposed approach defines a reference architecture of enterprise intent that includes vocabulary, rules, and structure for development of purposefully aligned strategic-level enterprise architecture. The proposed approach results in interacting hierarchies that can be analyzed through network science approaches.
Managing software projects can often degrade into fighting fires lit by the embers of unrecognized and unmanaged risks. Stakeholders are a recognized source of significant software project risk, but few researchers have focused on providing a practical method for identifying specific project stakeholders. Furthermore, no methods provide guidance in identifying and managing project risks arising from those stakeholders. We developed the outcome-based stakeholder risk assessment model to provide this practical guidance. OBSRAM offers the project team a step-by-step approach to identifying stakeholders during requirements engineering, identifying stakeholder influences on the project, identifying the project's impact on stakeholders, and assessing the risks that their potential negative responses pose. We illustrate OBSRAM using a case study of a simulated airline-crew-scheduling system project that aims to reduce aircraft ground turnaround time to 30 minutes or less
