Accurate forecasting of wind farms power produ c- tion up to two days ahead is recognized as a major contribution for rel iable large -scale wind power integration. Especially, in a liberalized electricity market, prediction tools enhance th e pos i- tion of wind energy compared to other forms of dispatchable ge n- eration. As wind integration increases, the requirements for wind power forecasting diversify depending on the end -user and the context. In the frame of the EU project Anemos multidiscipl inary research has been carried out in wind forecasting by a number of research organizations and end -users with wide e xperience in the field. Advanced statistical, physical and combined modeling a p- proaches were developed including methods for on -line unce r- tainty and prediction risk a ssessment. An integrated software platform was developed to host the various models. It was i n- stalled by several end -users for on -line o peration and evaluation at a local, regional and national scale. This paper pr esents the re search methodology and the major results o btained.
This paper concentrates on numerical studies of thermally induced shock waves in a tantalum target using the commercial LS-Dyna code. Initial calculations of the stresses induced in the Neutrino Factory target are presented as well as an estimation of the shock stresses resulting from pulsed heating of a tantalum wire using an electric current.

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES six complete and one fragmentary tripod ewer found in Wales, and discusses their form, its origin, and their metallic composition. Six are simplified versions of a more elaborate prototype, and are of a type widely distributed and copied in Britain and N. Europe, which probably signals the more general adoption of metal vessels in 14th-century households.

Most of the thirty‐six pewter items were found to have been made from high quality tin‐rich alloys with low lead content, hardened with a small amount (0.5–3.0%) of copper; these were thought to be from the later part of the period. Three items, one with the highest copper content of all the alloys, were thought to be from the earlier part of the period. Five items with up to 2% of copper hardener but with lead levels up to 26.5% were thought to be of provincial origin. A possible correlation of alloy composition and date and place of manufacture with rim‐form is discussed. A wavelength‐dispersive technique was used for the analyses.
SummaryTen medieval ribbed mortars from British collections, only three with known provenances, are described, and their relationship with the Hispano-Moresque and Islamic series of such vessels discussed. They have been sampled for analysis of the alloys used in their manufacture, most being found to be alloys which would today be referred to as ‘leaded bronze’ or ‘leaded gunmetal’. The Deptford mortar, however, was found to be made from an impure copper, and the Coity vessel from a ‘leaded brass’.
A small electron focusing cage for use in electron bombardment floating zone melting is described. The design eliminates contamination of the specimen by the filament. The filament, which is protected from material ejected by the molten zone, is not visible to the operator and does not interfere with observation of the zone. A grid electrode has been used; this resulted in a reduction of the power required to form a given zone.
As part of an investigation into the effect of substrate structure on the nucleation and growth of electro-deposits, it was desired to produce in a metal single crystal of high purity various types of imperfection. ‘Striation’1 boundaries and cell boundaries (‘corrugation’2 boundaries) were thought to be suitable as the former should give low-angle boundaries (¼°–5°) with little impurity while the latter should illustrate the effect on nucleation of the impurity contained in cell boundaries.
This paper presents the objectives and the research work carried out in the frame of the ANEMOS project on short-term wind power forecasting. The aim of the project is to develop accurate models that substantially outperform current state-of-the-art methods, for onshore and offshore wind power forecasting, exploiting both statistical and physical modeling approaches. The project focus on prediction horizons up to 48 hours ahead and investigates predictability of wind for higher horizons up to 7 days ahead useful i.e. for maintenance scheduling. Emphasis is given on the integration of high- resolution meteorological forecasts. For the offshore case, marine meteorology is considered as well as information by satellite-radar images. Specific modules are also developed for on-line uncertainty and prediction risk estimation. An integrated software platform, 'ANEMOS', is developed to host the various models. This system will be installed by several end-users for on-line operation at onshore and offshore wind farms for prediction at a local, regional and national scale. The applications include different terrain types and wind climates, on- and offshore cases, and interconnected or island grids. The on-line operation by the utilities will allow validation of the models and an analysis of the value of wind prediction for a competitive integration of wind energy in the developing liberalized electricity markets in the EU.
