D/deaf clients perceive music through their bodies. The music therapist needs various methods to appreciate these sensations. It is necessary to examine the instruments from a vibrational perspective. Also, listening to the client is more important than speaking. This article focuses on how non-verbal methods are more appropriate when working with clients who have a hearing loss. Vibrosensoric approach to music combined with touch-based communication methods (social-haptic communication) enhances a positive client response. As a deafblind music therapist, musical vibrations play an important role for me as well as for the client during a therapy process. Background noise and spoken language can sometimes mask the perception of musical tones from different types of instruments. Speech with music within GIM sessions renders the client unable to follow either music or storyline. This distorts the sounds in hearing aid devices. Therefore, the instrument selection within the therapy session needs to be considered from a vibratory aspect. Musical tones from the instruments can be felt in different parts of the body. In this case, the focus is not on how an instrument sounds but more on the vibrational sensations it produces.
One of the most used media is television. Almost all of us have a television set at home. Television is commonly thought also to be accessible, and for most of us, it seems to be so. However, there are people who cannot enjoy televised programmes without special measures. These measures include subtitling, audio description and sign language interpretation. All these are mentioned in the in-force EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive. In this article we look at how these are broadcast in different countries, what equipment is needed for receiving them, and how accessible the programme information (EPG) and menus to choose these accessibility options are, as they most often are not automatic, but have to be turned on in the accessibility options menu or the TV set or digital terrestrial receiver box (digibox). This article focuses on accessibility with special interest on the dual-sensory impaired perspective over four days comparing two countries: the UK where all three accessibility features mentioned above are well-established and Finland, where accessibility features concentrate mainly on subtitling.
This case study investigates interpreting emotions and behaviour for the deafblind. Here we give examples on the different methods used for enhancing emotions based on sign language, speech-to-text and other types of interpreting. The group in question consists of individuals with a hearing impairment (the deaf and hard-of-hearing groups), individuals with a dual-sensory impairment and individuals with a deafblindness. The study investigates the interpreting process as a means to increase a person's social inclusion and well-being. The examples given in the article consist of different types of interprets received by the individuals within a film watching event. A further note is made on venue layout and individual needs with regards to interpreting needs and preferences.

Working with hearing and dual-sensory impaired clients presents challenges for music therapy professionals. Feeling and experiencing the vibrations produced by music help to understand what the concept of music is. Music and vibroacoustic therapies have overlapping effects. Music is for listening while vibroacoustic therapy is mainly similar to physiotherapy. Where vibroacoustic (VA) facilities are not available, some flexible methods could be adapted. One can use a music centre with two separate, moveable speakers positioned on a wooden floor to enhance music vibrations. In conjunction inflatable balloons can be manipulated by the clients. Balloons can be held towards the sound source and used to test the variations of the intensity and dynamics of the vibrations in the room. The choice of music styles plays an important role to amplify the vibrations and introduce music to the clients. Clients’ feedback was very positive indicating they were able to feel some musical tones from low, middle and high levels. These methods appeared to enhance musical vibrations and give some therapeutic experiences, i.e. relaxation and awareness of musical tones. This approach has been tested over 25 years and the individual feedback supports notions on how tones are felt through the body.
For a person with a visual impairment, the quality of life means independence and equality with the sighted people. For this, independent travel and navigation is essential. Orientation within different types of environments is a challenge and tactile maps are key elements for this. It can also be used for learning about new routes independently. A tactile map is an image of spatial information and figure that uses raised lines and surfaces when introducing a certain area in 3D form. For a public tactile map to be useful, it has to contain consistent information for the user. In this study we present results from a survey for the orientation and mobility (O&M) instructors of Finland about usability and ideas for improvement concerning public tactile maps. We sent the survey questionnaire for 30 O&M instructors by electronic mail and there was also a possibility to answer by paper. Altogether we received 24 answers. The main finding was that most of the O&M instructors did not use public tactile maps during the sessions.
Maps are regularly used in planning a trip or a route, e.g. when going on a holiday abroad or driving to a meeting in a place one has not visited before. Sighted people can get hold to a map quite easily as they are available both in paper copies and furthermore virtual maps are more and more widely available too. When one is visiting a city abroad one uses maybe more than one map at a time - city map as well as a route map of the public transport. These can be carried quite easily, as well as referred to on a regular basis. There are also maps of bigger venues like seating plans of auditoriums or concert venues. For the visually impaired tactile maps are also a safety issue [1].
We present the Finnish PropBank, a resource for semantic role labeling (SRL) of Finnish based on the Turku Dependency Treebank whose syntax is annotated in the well-known Stanford Dependency (SD) scheme. The contribution of this paper consists of the lexicon of the verbs and their arguments present in the treebank, as well as the predicate-argument annotation of all verb occurrences in the treebank text. We demonstrate that the annotation is of high quality, that the SD scheme is highly compatible with PropBank annotation, and further that the additional dependencies present in the Turku Dependency Treebank are clearly beneficial for PropBank annotation. Further, we also use the PropBank to provide a strong baseline for automated Finnish SRL using a machine learning SRL system developed for the SemEval'14 shared task on broad-coverage semantic dependency parsing. In this paper, we present the final version of a publicly available treebank of Finnish, the Turku Dependency Treebank. The treebank contains 204,399 tokens (15,126 sentences) from 10 different text sources and has been manually annotated in a Finnish-specific version of the well-known Stanford Dependency scheme. The morphological analyses of the treebank have been assigned using a novel machine learning method to disambiguate readings given by an existing tool. As the second main contribution, we present the first open source Finnish dependency parser, trained on the newly introduced treebank. The parser achieves a labeled attachment score of 81 %. The treebank data as well as the parsing pipeline are available under an open license at http://bionlp.utu.fi/ .

In work places where there are hearing and visually impaired col-leagues, there are safety related issues that are not present in work environment where there are only hearing and sighted employees. For example all the premises and safe routes within have to be precisely memorised by all employees in case there is an emergency during the work day. In an ordinary work place annual safety rehearsals and fire drills are enough to remind all workers about the safe routes and procedures in an emergency, but for the visually and hearing impaired employees this is not enough, but for the dual-sensory impaired employee it might prove difficult just to realise what room he/she is in at a particular moment. This procedure is made easier by so-called body mapping, i.e. drawing a simplified floor plan of the room on the back or on the back of the hand of the worker [1, pp.136-138]. The body map includes the exits, the emergency exit should there be any, and safe routes to the exits. Sometimes, tactile maps can be provided for the same purpose too [2]. Another issue related to fire alarms is that the hearing impaired workers might not be aware of the fire alarm sound. Thus the information must be relayed to the colleagues using other methods. Currently, there is a specialised touch-based social quick message system [3], which is used in some international deafblind meetings and conferences, and it is also taught to hotel staff in venues of Finnish Deafblind Association AGMs.
In this work, we present the first results of a project aiming at a Finnish Proposition Bank, an annotated corpus of semantic roles. The annotation is based on an existing treebank of Finnish, the Turku Dependency Treebank, annotated using the well-known Stanford Dependency scheme. We describe the use of the dependency treebank for PropBanking purposes and show that both annotation layers present in the treebank are highly useful for the annotation of semantic roles. We also discuss the specific features of Finnish influencing the development of a PropBank as well as the methods employed in the annotation, and finally, we present preliminary evaluation of the annotation quality.
