Double parton scattering is investigated using events with a Z boson and jets. The measurements are performed with proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected in the year 2016. Differential cross sections of Z + $\geq$1 jet and Z + $\geq$2 jets are measured with transverse momentum of the jets above 20 GeV and pseudorapidity $|\eta|\lt$ 2.4. Several distributions with sensitivity to double parton scattering effects are measured as functions of the angle and the transverse momentum imbalance between the Z boson and the jets. The measured distributions are compared with predictions from several event generators with different hadronization models and different parameter settings for multiparton interactions. The measured distributions show a dependence on the hadronization and multiparton interaction simulation parameters, and are important input for future improvements of the simulations.
Angular distributions of the decay B$^+$ $\to$ K$^*$(892)$^+\mu^+\mu^-$ are studied using events collected with the CMS detector in $\sqrt{s}=$ 8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.0 fb$^{-1}$. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K$^*$(892)$^+$ meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. These are the first results from this exclusive decay mode and are in agreement with a standard model prediction.
The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapidity-dependent difference ($\Delta v_2$) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, $v_2$) between $\mathrm{D}^0$ ($\mathrm{\bar{u}c}$) and $\overline{\mathrm{D}}^0$ ($\mathrm{u\bar{c}}$) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of $\Delta v_2$. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be $\langle\Delta v_2 \rangle =$ 0.001 $\pm$ 0.001 (stat) $\pm$ 0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the $\mathrm{D}^0$ and $\overline{\mathrm{D}}^0$ mesons $v_2$ and triangular flow coefficient ($v_3$) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt $\mathrm{D}^0$ meson $v_2$ values is observed, while the $v_3$ is largely independent of centrality. These trends are consistent with expectations of flow driven by the initial-state geometry.
The $CP$-violating weak phase $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ and the decay width difference $\Delta\Gamma_\mathrm{s}$ between the light and heavy B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ mass eigenstates are measured with the CMS detector at the LHC in a sample of 48500 reconstructed B$^0_\mathrm{s}\to$ J$/\psi\, \phi$(1020) $\to \mu^+\mu^-$K$^+$K$^-$ events. The measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV in 2017-2018. To extract the values of $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ and $\Delta\Gamma_\mathrm{s}$, a time-dependent and flavor-tagged angular analysis of the $ \mu^+\mu^-$K$^+$K$^-$ final state is performed. The analysis employs a dedicated tagging trigger and a novel opposite-side muon flavor tagger based on machine learning techniques. The measurement yields $\phi_\mathrm{s} = -$11 $\pm$ 50 (stat) $\pm$ 10 (syst) mrad and $\Delta\Gamma_\mathrm{s} =$ 0.114 $\pm$ 0.014 (stat) $\pm$ 0.007 (syst) ps$^{-1}$, in agreement with the standard model predictions. When combined with the previous CMS measurement at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV, the following values are obtained: $\phi_\mathrm{s} = -$21 $\pm$ 45 mrad, $\Delta\Gamma_\mathrm{s} =$ 0.1073 $\pm$ 0.0097 ps$^{-1}$, a significant improvement over the 8 TeV result.
The second-order Fourier coefficients ($v_2$) characterizing the azimuthal distribution of $\Upsilon$(1S) and $\Upsilon$(2S) mesons arising from PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV are studied. The $\Upsilon$ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The data set was collected in 2018 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$. The scalar product method is used to extract the $v_2$ coefficients of the azimuthal distribution. Results are reported for the rapidity range $|y|\lt$ 2.4, with the transverse momentum 0 $\lt p_\mathrm{T} \lt$ 50 GeV/$c$, and in three centrality ranges of 10-30, 30-50 and 50-90%. In contrast to the J/$\psi$ mesons, no azimuthal anisotropy is observed for the $\Upsilon$ mesons.
Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson.

The analysis studies P-wave ${\\mathrm {B}} ^0_{\\mathrm {s}} $ meson decays into ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{(*)+} \\mathrm {K} ^- $ and ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{(*)0} \\mathrm {K} ^0_{\\mathrm {S}} $ , where the ${\\mathrm {B}} ^+ $ and ${\\mathrm {B}} ^0 $ mesons are identified using the decays ${\\mathrm {B}} ^+ \\rightarrow {\\mathrm {J}}/\\psi \\mathrm {K} ^+ $ and ${\\mathrm {B}} ^0 \\rightarrow {\\mathrm {J}}/\\psi \\mathrm {K} ^{*}(892)^0 $ . The masses of the P-wave ${\\mathrm {B}} ^0_{\\mathrm {s}} $ meson states are measured and the natural width of the ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{*}_{\\mathrm {s}2}(5840)^0 $ state is determined. The first measurement of the mass difference between the charged and neutral ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{*} $ mesons is also presented. The ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{*}_{\\mathrm {s}2}(5840)^0 $ decay to ${\\mathrm {B}} ^0 \\mathrm {K} ^0_{\\mathrm {S}} $ is observed, together with a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the ${\\mathrm {B}} ^{*}_{\\mathrm {s}2}(5840)^0 \\rightarrow {\\mathrm {B}} ^+ \\mathrm {K} ^- $ decay.
This Letter presents the observation of the rare Z boson decay Z → ψl^+l^−. Here, ψ represents contributions from direct J/ψ and ψ(2S)→J/ψX, l^+l^− is a pair of electrons or muons, and the J/ψ meson is detected via its decay to μ^+μ^−. The sample of proton-proton collision data, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The signal is observed with a significance in excess of 5 standard deviations. After subtraction of the ψ(2S) → J/ψX contribution, the ratio of the branching fraction of the exclusive decay Z→J/ψl+l− to the decay Z → μ^+μ^−μ^+μ^− within a fiducial phase space is measured to be B(Z → J/ψl^+l^−)/B(Z → μ^+μ^−μ^+μ^−) = 0.67 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.05(syst).
Modifications of the properties of jets in PbPb collisions, relative to those in pp collisions, are studied at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV via correlations of charged particles with the jet axis in relative pseudorapidity ($\Delta \eta$), relative azimuth ($\Delta \phi$), and relative angular distance from the jet axis $\Delta \mathrm{r} = \sqrt{{(\Delta\eta)^{2}+(\Delta\phi)^{2}}}$. This analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 404 $\mu$b$^{-1}$ and 27.4 pb$^{-1}$ for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Charged particle number densities, jet fragmentation functions, and jet shapes are presented as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charged-particle track transverse momentum, providing a differential description of jet modifications due to interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.
