The University of Algiers (Arabic:جامعة الجزائر – بن يوسف بن خـدة ), commonly called the Algiers 1 University, is a public research university located in Algiers, Algeria. It is the oldest and most prestigious university in Algeria. Emerging from a series of independent institutions in the 19th century, it was organized as a university in 1909 and profoundly reorganized in 2009.
The high production cost of biosurfactants remains a major limitation to their large-scale application in environmental remediation and industrial processes. This study investigated the use of low-cost agro-industrial and fishery residues as alternative substrates for biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa MELI 1 isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Four waste-derived feedstocks, namely prickly pear peels, sardine heads, chicken feet, and ripened dates, were evaluated and compared with a glucose-based medium. Among the tested substrates, prickly pear peels supported the highest biosurfactant production (13.30 ± 0.61 g L−1 crude extract), biomass concentration (3.10 ± 0.15 g L−1), and substrate-to-product conversion yield (Y_P/S = 0.346 g g−1 crude extract; 0.208 g g−1 purity-corrected). Sardine-head medium exhibited the highest emulsification activity (E24 = 64%), whereas date-derived medium achieved the highest cleaning performance. Kinetic analysis based on the Luedeking–Piret model indicated that biosurfactant production was predominantly growth-associated across all substrates. Surface tension was reduced from 72.0 to 28.5 mN m−1, and the critical micelle concentration was determined to be 85 mg L−1. Colorimetric assays and FTIR spectroscopy indicated the production of a glycolipid-type biosurfactant exhibiting characteristics consistent with rhamnolipid-like compounds. However, definitive structural identification requires advanced analytical techniques such as LC-MS/MS or NMR spectroscopy. The biosurfactant maintained functional activity over a broad range of pH and temperature conditions. A preliminary techno-economic assessment suggested that the use of waste-derived substrates substantially reduced feedstock costs relative to the glucose-based medium, with prickly pear peels showing the most favorable balance between production performance and estimated process economics. Further studies involving advanced structural characterization, process scale-up, and comprehensive techno-economic evaluation are required.Overall, the results demonstrate the potential of agro-industrial and fishery residues as renewable feedstocks for biosurfactant production and support their valorization within circular bioeconomy strategies aimed at waste reduction, resource recovery, and sustainable environmental remediation.
Several mono-succinimides with a sulfonyl moiety, as well as the bis-succinimide derivatives, were generated using ultrasound. In the presence of an environmentally friendly boric acid (H3BO3), some substituted maleimides and different amines are used in this synthetic method. Synthesized derivatives were obtained with good chemical yields (up to 92
Morphological variability of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) was examined along the central Algerian coast during the reproductive period (June–August 2023) to establish contemporary biometric baselines and evaluate phenotypic patterns in a key Mediterranean small pelagic fish. Sixty adult specimens (30 females and 30 males) were analyzed for six meristic and twelve metric characters. Meristic traits exhibited strong uniformity (coefficient of variation < 6.5
China's commitment to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 requires deep decarbonization of its industrial sector, responsible for over 60% of national energy-related CO2 emissions. This paper assesses the electricity network capacity needed to support industrial electrification under three scenarios: Business-as-Usual, Balanced Decarbonization and Max Electrification. Using a spatially disaggregated, province-level modeling approach, we project industrial electricity demand through 2050 and compare it to grid headroom to identify infrastructure constraints. Results show that while eastern coastal provinces can accommodate demand growth through 2030, central and western regions face significant capacity shortfalls by 2040-2050. Without targeted investments in transmission and distribution networks, over 55% of large point-source industrial sites could face grid constraints-threatening national decarbonization goals. Policy recommendations include region-specific grid reinforcement, alignment of electrification with infrastructure planning, and integration of network constraints into national energy models. This study provides the first spatially explicit assessment of electricity grid limitations for industrial decarbonization in China, offering key insights for policymakers and planners navigating the net-zero transition. The findings also support progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals-specifically SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)-while aligning with China's ecological civilization strategy for green and inclusive industrial transformation.
For centuries, the Biomedical Model has contributed to improving the health of populations. Its success in increasing longevity was considerable, as evidenced by the decline in infectious diseases, which have given way to chronic diseases. These diseases are related to lifestyles and require long-term treatment, and this is where the biomedical model finds its limits. The current analysis demonstrates the contribution of health psychology to the evolution of patient care. Previously, compliance to treatment was viewed passively (following medical instructions). Now, it has been replaced by adherence to treatment, whereby the patient becomes an active participant in the implementation of his medical treatment. During this evolution, new concepts emerged, and others were added to clarify how to achieve and maintain treatment adherence. The challenge of modern medicine is to work on the behaviors of populations at risk or affected by chronic diseases. Health Psychology helps us to understand health-related behaviors. This analytical study focuses on one aspect of health behaviors: therapeutic compliance and adherence, which highlight the doctor-patient relationship. Poor compliance with long-term treatments for chronic diseases often leads to complications related to the development of various pathologies due to non-compliance with medical prescriptions. Therapeutic compliance is supposed to aim to improve the patient's health. But it turned out that patients do not meet all the expectations of the medical prescriber. Our interest is to identify the issue of therapeutic observance. In this context, several notions are often used to designate the same practice, i.e., following medical prescriptions, such as observance or compliance, which is the least used, adherence, which is the most used, concordance, persistence, and empowerment. Each notion refers to a semantic point of view; our objective is to present these concepts and thus clarify the determinants of the health behavior that is therapeutic adherence.
