The Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga or UNAB (Autonomous University of Bucaramanga) is a private post-secondary education institution in Bucaramanga, Colombia. It was founded in 1952 under the name of Instituto Caldas. In 1956 the institution was recognized as a law school, and became a university under the current name in 1987. Administration, Law and Public Accounting are its oldest programs. It now offers 19 programs. The Faculty of Social Communication, with its two lines, Organizational and Journalism, was credited by the Colombia's National Accreditation Council for six years as a High Quality program, becoming this way one of the six faculties of Communication with this title in the country. UNAB received the certification of Acreditación of International Quality granted by the Consejo Latinoamericano de Acreditación de la Educación en Periodismo, CLAEP that stands out the "execution of the norms of quality and excellence in the formation of journalists for the period 2006-2012".Other recognitions of the Faculty of Social Communication of UNAB in 2006 were the best position at national level in the tests of academic quality, Ecaes; the reward given to the Periódico 15, the Faculty's students newspaper, as the "best university newspaper" of Colombia. The last of them was the Simón Bolívar National Journalism Prize in the Best interview category, received by journalist Pastor Virviescas, chief editor of the paper..
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is common in preterm neonates, especially before 28 weeks’ gestation, and is associated with morbidity such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, hemorrhage, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Beyond immaturity, perinatal factors, postnatal interventions, and altitude, may affect ductal persistence; altitude is proposed as a modifier, though evidence is limited. The objective of the study is to describe the prevalence, the clinical, and echocardiographic characteristics of PDA at 72 h of life in neonates born before 28.6 weeks of gestation in two Colombian cities located at different altitudes. A prospective observational descriptive study with exploratory analysis was conducted from January 2022 to January 2024 in Bucaramanga (959 m above sea level) and Pasto (2,527 m above sea level). Sixty neonates born before 28.6 weeks underwent color Doppler echocardiography at 72 h. Hemodynamically significant PDA was defined using a standardized, center-agreed echocardiographic scoring system criteria adapted from previously described criteria. Patent ductus arteriosus was present in 85
Colombia’s PAPSIVI program is the world’s largest psychosocial support service for victims of armed conflict providing support for over half a million civilians. However, service delivery has only previously been examined in small studies, making it difficult to understand to what extent PAPSIVI delivers interventions that are adequately targeted to individuals with the most serious exposures to the armed conflict, and to what extent attendees remain engaged with interventions. We investigated how different conflict exposures related to PAPSIVI intervention assignment and engagement. We linked anonymised national data from the register of victims of the Colombian armed conflict to data from N = 534,818 PAPSIVI attenders. Analysis used logistic and linear regression with cluster robust standard errors, adjusted for a range of potential confounders. Intervention types were broadly provided in line with PAPSIVI guidelines, with victims experiencing torture, sexual violence, and forced recruitment more likely to receive individual sessions, while community-level impacts received community interventions. Female sex, ethnic minority status, and receiving state-subsidised healthcare were associated with higher intervention engagement. Those with previous mental health diagnoses had increased odds of attending individual or family sessions but lower odds of group or community sessions, consistent with recommendations for more intensive intervention for those with higher mental health needs. 29% of individual session attendees only received a single session, potentially indicating early dropout or unsuitable service provision for a proportion of attendees. This study provides insights into support provision for civilian victims of conflict indicating that psychosocial support provision can be managed effectively at very large scales.
Energy poverty hinders socio-economic development in remote rural areas, especially those reliant on fossil fuels. In Colombia, most off-grid regions are electrified using diesel, while biomass gasification, widely available as residual biomass from subsistence crops, remains underutilized. This paper advocates for incentives to integrate biomass gasification into rural electrification strategies to reduce energy poverty. We develop a novel biobjective optimization model to facilitate centralized rural electrification budgeting decisions and to demonstrate the benefits of biomass over diesel. The model compares existing diesel-based infrastructure with downdraft gasifiers across 575 off-grid Colombian settlements, optimizing the current budget used to subsidize household electricity bills while minimizing both the energy access gap and household overspending on energy. Findings show that biomass gasification could feasibly replace diesel in up to 78% of the settlements analyzed, achieving significant reductions in energy poverty within existing budget constraints. Moreover, applying a uniform 85% subsidy across all settlements further reduces the risk of excessive household energy spending more effectively than the current variable subsidy (60-90%). This study contributes to the energy policy literature by demonstrating the strategic role of biomass gasification as a cost-effective alternative to diesel and by showing how technology choice and subsidy design jointly reduce energy poverty by translating cost savings into higher effective support for rural households.
ABSTRACT Objective: To determine users' perceptions of the care provided by nursing personnel, from Kristen Swanson's perspective, in a tertiary care institution. Method: Cross-sectional observational study of 192 adults, selected through stratified probability sampling by service, from a universe of 7,601 users, with 7% precision, 50% expected frequency, 95% confidence level, and 1 design effect. Results: Median age: 43 years; 56.77% women; median stay: 5 days. Overall score in Professional Care: 55.59. No significant differences in the score were found according to age or length of stay. Conclusions: The results show comprehensive care, based on the five moments of Swanson's theory, highlighting the team's competence in getting to know the user, accompanying them, promoting their autonomy, strengthening their beliefs, and actively participating in the health process.
