The University of Santander (UDES) is a private research university, approved by the Colombian government through the Ministry of Education, according to legal status 810 1996; organized under the provisions of Act 30 of 1992. This university has different locations in Colombia and Latin America being the main campus located in Bucaramanga, other campus are Panama City (Panama), Bogotá, Cúcuta and Valledupar. Provides technical, undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and continual education programs.
Students involved in health sciences programs usually experience high levels of stress due to the academic loads, clinical responsibilities, and emotional demands from caring for patients. This situation can negatively impact student performance. In Latin America, few studies have investigated this problem. We sought to identify the prevalence of stress perceived by health science university students in northeastern Colombia, as well as the associated factors and the relationships between these factors and individual coping strategies. We conducted an analytic cross-sectional study involving 783 undergraduate students from thirteen academic programs in the health sciences. The students completed the Spanish versions of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) and the Brief Coping Orientation Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE-28). In addition, sociodemographic variables related to lifestyle and the academic environment were collected. Frequencies and proportions were calculated for the qualitative variables, and measures of central tendency and dispersion were calculated for the quantitative variables. A backward stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between covariates and perceived stress; this was not a causal study. A p value < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. The median age of the participants was 21 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 20–25), and the sample included 550 (70.2
This study evaluated the impact of perioperative levosimendan on in-hospital outcomes in children undergoing surgery for complex congenital heart disease. A retrospective cohort of 120 neonates and infants undergoing Norwood operation, arterial switch operation, or truncus arteriosus repair was analyzed. Median age at surgery was 29.5 days, and median weight was 4.0 kg. In-hospital mortality was higher in female patients, who exhibited a 2.64-fold greater mortality rate compared with males (33.3
The pressing need to address environmental challenges offers a significant opportunity to adopt zero-waste technologies, which can facilitate sustainable management across different levels of governance. This review focuses on recent innovative zero-waste technologies and their implementation frameworks for effective application at international, national, and state levels. The overarching concept of zero-waste involves the development of strategies aimed at eradicating waste throughout the lifecycle of products, including design, production, consumption, and disposal. The aim of this approach is not only to decrease environmental consequences but also to establish a circular economy in which resources are perpetually reused, recycled, or composted. At the global level, organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) have promoted initiatives for zero waste through worldwide frameworks and guidelines that encourage member states to adopt environmentally friendly waste management practices. These international efforts include setting ambitious targets for waste reduction, sharing best practices, and supporting the development of innovative technologies. It is crucial for national governments to translate the international guidelines into concrete policies and regulations. For instance, countries such as Japan and Germany have successfully implemented zero-waste programs through comprehensive legislative frameworks, public awareness campaigns, and the integration of advanced waste-management technologies. These national policies provide a foundation for state and local governments to develop tailored strategies to address specific regional challenges. At the state level, innovative zero-waste technologies such as advanced recycling systems, waste-to-energy solutions, and biodegradable materials are being tested and refined. States serve as laboratories for experimentation, showcasing successful models that can be scaled or adapted for broader applications. Collaborative efforts among state agencies, businesses, and communities are essential for the effective deployment of these technologies. This review emphasizes the interconnected roles of international, national, and state frameworks in advancing zero-waste technologies. It emphasizes the importance of cohesive strategies and multilevel collaboration in achieving a sustainable future, where waste is minimized, and resources are conserved for future generations.
The present study aimed to identify the types of coercive practices in healthcare services and to analyze their relationship with psychosocial disability and days in crisis among individuals with suicide attempts in Colombia. A mixed-methods design was adopted. The quantitative component consisted of an analytical cross-sectional study with a stratified sample of 622 individuals, using validated instruments to assess depressive symptoms, resilience, subjective well-being, loneliness, continuity of care and psychosocial disability. The qualitative component involved 30 semi-structured interviews, analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Multivariate analysis explained 45.1
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with dyslipidemia playing a key role in its progression. Despite advances in lipid-lowering therapy (LLT), LDL-C (Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol) goal achievement remains suboptimal. This study evaluated LDL-C goal attainment in Colombian patients with very high cardiovascular risk (CVR) due to coronary artery disease (CAD) following ESC/EAS guidelines updates. EDHIPO MARCA (Evaluación De adherencia a la terapia HIPOlipemiante en pacientes de Muy Alto Riesgo CArdiovascular) is a retrospective, multicenter study assessing LDL-C goal achievement in patients with CAD. Data were collected from previous coronary angiogram reports and medical records across 11 Colombian healthcare institutions with certified interventional cardiology services. Patients with CAD who had at least one follow-up LDL-C measurement and an LLT prescription within 12 months post-angiogram were included. LDL-C goal attainment was assessed across three periods—2011–2012, 2016–2017, and 2021–2022—corresponding to the updates of ESC/EAS guidelines (2011, 2016, and 2019, respectively). The LDL-C goals were <70 mg/dL for the first two periods and <55 mg/dL for the most recent one. LDL-C was measured or estimated using the Friedewald equation. Descriptive analyses were performed. A total of 1,788 patients were included, with a median age of 66 years (IQR: 59–74), and 70.7
