This chapter describes the categories and organization of data items used in the representation of image data. The classification applies to both Crystallographic Binary File (CBF) and Image-supporting Crystallographic Information File (imgCIF) representations. The primary motivation for introducing the items defined in the CBF/imgCIF dictionary is to extend the mmCIF dictionary (Chapter 3.6 ) for the storage of synchrotron diffraction images. However, these items have the potential for use in other fields that require binary image data, including journal publishing, the creation of web pages or the production of movies. Data categories in the CBF/imgCIF dictionary support one-, two- and three-dimensional array detectors that output data organized by time and/or wavelength. Three major groups of categories are defined: ARRAY_DATA describes the image data themselves; AXIS is used to identify unambiguously the laboratory coordinate system; and DIFFRN introduces new terms that characterize the experimental apparatus and measurements.
This is version 1.3.2 of the image CIF dictionary (imgCIF) and crystallographic binary file (CBF) dictionary. Use of this dictionary is described in Chapter 3.7. The CBF format is described in Chapter 2.3 and Chapter 5.6 describes a software library for manipulating image data. The data names defined here extend the macromolecular CIF dictionary (Chapter 4.5). Keywords: crystallography; CIF; CIF dictionaries; Crystallographic Information File; imgCIF; image-supporting Crystallographic Information File; data names; data categories; DDL2
This chapter is an introduction for programmers new to CIF to ways of creating new `CIF-aware' applications and of adapting existing applications to make them CIF-aware. We review general considerations in programming CIF-aware applications, ranging from leaving an application CIF-unaware and relying on external filter utilities to do the job, through engineering an existing application to directly read and write CIFs, to writing a new CIF-aware application from scratch.
ABSTRACT A panel discussion on teaching the Mediterranean was convened at the 2021 Annual Congress of the Mediterranean Studies Association. Three panelists presented their approaches to teaching the Mediterranean. These presentations were followed by a general discussion that included members of the audience.
