Vocabulary acquisition plays a crucial role in developing writing proficiency among foreign language learners. Many students encounter difficulties in expressing ideas due to limited lexical knowledge and lack of contextual exposure to language use. Recent studies suggest that visual media can facilitate language learning by integrating visual and verbal information, thereby enhancing comprehension and memory retention (Teng, 2023; Jalali & Sahebkheir, 2024). This study aims to investigate how visual media contribute to improving vocabulary acquisition and writing performance among foreign students learning English as a foreign language. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving ten foreign students enrolled in an intermediate writing course at a private university in Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of students’ written assignments. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns related to vocabulary development, writing coherence, and students’ learning experiences. The findings indicate that visual media such as images, infographics, and short videos stimulate vocabulary recall, facilitate idea generation, and improve students’ confidence in writing. Students were able to produce more coherent texts and demonstrate greater lexical variety after participating in visual-based writing activities. The results support previous research highlighting the effectiveness of multimodal learning environments in second language acquisition (Nami & Asadnia, 2024; Sukserm & Wasanasomsithi, 2023). The study concludes that integrating visual media into writing instruction can significantly enhance vocabulary development and writing performance among foreign learners. These findings provide pedagogical implications for language teachers seeking innovative strategies to support writing instruction through multimodal approaches.
Traditional costumes and cultural attributes serve as significant cultural symbols that embody identity, social values, and philosophical principles within a community. In cinematic productions, however, these cultural symbols are frequently reconstructed through visual narratives, potentially generating selective and ideologically shaped interpretations of cultural reality. This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings represented through traditional Palembang costumes and cultural attributes in the film Gending Sriwijaya. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research adopts John Fiske’s semiotic framework, which examines the construction of meaning across three interconnected levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The analysis focuses on selected scenes featuring prominent elements of Palembang culture, including songket, siger, and tepak sirih. Data were collected through systematic observation, visual documentation, and an extensive review of relevant literature. The findings demonstrate that these cultural symbols function not merely as aesthetic components but also as visual signifiers of cultural identity, social hierarchy, and ceremonial traditions. At the level of reality, the film presents recognizable cultural markers; nevertheless, their portrayal remains largely confined to superficial visual representations. At the level of representation, cinematic techniques such as framing, lighting, and camera focus selectively foreground cultural symbols associated predominantly with aristocratic characters. At the ideological level, the film tends to simplify and fragment the complexity of Palembang culture by predominantly associating cultural richness with elite social groups. Consequently, the study concludes that the film presents a selective and partial reconstruction of Palembang culture, shaped primarily by narrative, aesthetic, and ideological considerations rather than providing a comprehensive representation of authentic cultural practices.
The rapid development of digital communication and the increasing use of YouTube in Indonesia have transformed the ways individuals produce, distribute, and interpret messages. YouTube is no longer merely an entertainment platform but also serves as a space for education, public discussion, and opinion formation. This study aimed to analyze the construction of digital communication messages in Ferry Irwandi’s YouTube content using John Fiske’s semiotic approach. A qualitative method with semiotic analysis was employed to examine the verbal, visual, and ideological signs contained in the selected content. The analysis was based on John Fiske’s three levels of semiotics: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings showed that Ferry Irwandi constructed his digital communication messages through a casual appearance, relaxed gestures, rational language, a transparent live-streaming format, bright visual presentation, and the use of visual evidence. At the ideological level, the content promoted rationalism, empiricism, critical thinking, and education as means of challenging mystical claims and irrational beliefs. The study also found that the construction of messages in Ferry Irwandi’s content could serve as a basis for formulating digital communication strategies, particularly through credibility, transparency, humor, evidence-based argumentation, and audience engagement. Therefore, Ferry Irwandi’s YouTube content could be understood not only as digital entertainment but also as a form of public communication that educates, critiques, and encourages audiences to think critically.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Business Intelligence (BI) are advancing decision-making and strategic management in Small and Medium Enterprises, thereby improving competitiveness and digital sustainability. While there is a plethora of research on the application of AI and BI in SMEs, the literature is scattered. It varies in its understanding, frameworks, and methodologies, making it challenging to integrate the available knowledge. Prior reviews lack depth and focus, providing little to no commentary on publication patterns, foundational ideas, and prospective research paths. This work attempts to fill this research gap with a bibliometric analysis of AI and BI in SMEs, based on a sample of publications from Web of Science and Scopus from the period of 2015 to 2025. This analysis aims to address significant gaps in the literature by measuring publication volumes across countries and by authors worldwide, using digital maps, collaboration networks, co-occurring keywords, and co-citation and thematic mapping techniques to monitor the research productivity and intellectual geography of the discipline. The results obtained demonstrate the presence of several significant and nascent research areas, improving our understanding of the essential technological, scientific and strategic research advancements in these fields. This review draws on relevant theory and policy concerning the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2030), especially SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), which strengthen the value and relevance of this bibliometric analysis in shaping the adoption and sustainability of AI–BI within the context of SMEs.
Kopisari Farmer Group manages a 0.29-ha coffee MSME in Plaosan Village with 360 BP 308 coffee trees planted since 2008. The main problems are the lack of clear brand identity, structured product narratives, and consistent digital marketing channel management. This community service program aims to improve the partner's branding and digital marketing capacity through hands-on training and mentoring. The method used is participatory training, including needs assessment, positioning-storytelling workshops, social media optimization practice, and content calendar development. The program was evaluated using pre-test and post-test methods. The results showed an 85% increase in partner understanding, with average scores rising from 40 to 85. Practically, the partner successfully produced a positioning document, brand identity draft, farm storytelling script, and content calendar. The partner also optimized their digital storefront and activated customer reviews as social proof. In conclusion, practice-based mentoring effectively accelerates digital marketing adoption for farmer-group-based coffee MSMEs
