Solar flares are the most powerful, magnetically driven, explosions in the heliosphere. The nature of magnetic energy release in the solar corona that heats the plasma and accelerates particles in a flare, however, remains poorly understood. Here, we report high-resolution coronal observations of a flare by the Solar Orbiter mission that reveal initially weaker but rapid reconnection events, on timescales of a few seconds at most, leading to a more prominent activity of a similar nature that explosively causes a flare. Signatures of this process are further imprinted on the widespread raining plasma blobs with short lifetimes, giving rise to the characteristic ribbon-like emission pattern associated with the flare. Our observations unveil the central engine of a flare and emphasize the crucial role of an avalanche-like magnetic energy release mechanism at work.
In this work we report on the development of a Shunt LDO (SLDO) for use in the serial powering chain of staves and discs at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The device is designed in a 110nm CMOS technology and can supply up to 1 A at a voltage of 1.1 to 1.4 V. Simulated PSRR at DC is-56 dB, and efficiency is above 70 %. Safety features such as load overcur rent protection and the ability to shunt the current of failed parallel SLDOs are included. A first prototype has been submitted. In this work we will report on the design of the device, and on simulation results of the prototype.
Reducing embodied carbon in wall materials is increasingly important for humid tropical regions, where conventional fired clay bricks are widely used but require energy-intensive kiln firing and are vulnerable to moisture-related degradation. This study evaluates Eco-Fiber Clay Ash Blocks (EFCAB), an unfired interlocking block made from fly ash, clay, and water hyacinth fiber, as a laboratory-scale alternative wall material within a circular-economy framework. Three mixtures were prepared with a constant 10% water hyacinth fiber content and varying fly ash-clay ratios: V1 (40% fly ash, 50% clay, 10% fiber), V2 (35% fly ash, 55% clay, 10% fiber), and V3 (30% fly ash, 60% clay, 10% fiber). Conventional fired clay bricks were used as the control. Mechanical, hygrothermal, capillarity, wet-dry durability, and simplified cradle-to-gate embodied carbon analyses were conducted. The results show that V1 achieved the highest average compressive strength of 10.7 MPa compared with 8.0 MPa for the control. The same mixture also showed the highest dry density, lowest porosity, reduced water absorption, lower capillarity coefficient, and lower thermal conductivity. After 25 wet-dry cycles, V1 experienced a 4.5% reduction in compressive strength, while the control experienced a 12.5% reduction. One-way ANOVA indicated that mixture composition significantly influenced compressive strength (F = 34.53, p < 0.001, eta squared = 0.87). The embodied carbon calculation is presented as a simplified scenario-based estimate rather than a full ISO-compliant life cycle assessment; under the stated assumptions, V1 showed a potential reduction of approximately 66% compared with fired clay bricks. The findings indicate that EFCAB has promising laboratory-scale performance for non-load-bearing or low-rise wall applications in humid tropical contexts, although long-term exposure, microstructural validation, full-scale wall tests, fire resistance, shrinkage behavior, and code-based certification remain necessary before practical implementation.
Purpose – This study aims to describe the theory of sociology of literature, focusing on the mimetic approach in Donny Dhirgantoro’s novel 5 cm, as well as the relationship between the author and his work. Methodology – This study employs a qualitative method. The aspects analyzed are the sociological aspects represented in the novel “5 cm” through a mimetic approach. The data include characterizations, social status, attitudes toward life, daily behavior of the characters, and events. Findings – The main character in the novel is Genta, with Arial, Zafran, Riani, and Ian as additional characters. The social status depicted in the novel is influenced by economic, cultural, and psychological factors. The attitudes toward life represented in the novel include affection among fellow human beings, affection between parents and children, and responsibility between individuals. Novelty – The novelty of this study lies in examining the sociological aspects of “5 cm” through a mimetic approach by connecting characterizations, social status, attitudes toward life, daily behavior, and events with the relationship between the author and his work. Significance – This study contributes to the understanding of sociology of literature by showing how social realities and human attitudes are represented through the characters and events in “5 cm”.
