The concept of intersectionality examines how multiple and interdependent forms of oppression manifest among marginalized social groups, considering their social markers. This study aims to analyze intersectionality in the labor market, with a critical focus on the interactions between race, gender, and class as structuring axes of inequality. An integrative literature review was conducted, encompassing an in-depth analysis of 140 articles addressing intersectionality in the labor context. The findings reveal a persistent conceptual fragmentation of intersectionality and a dilution of critical debates within labor market research. Empirical evidence consistently shows that women and racialized groups face enduring structural barriers, including wage gaps, occupational segregation, and limited access to leadership positions. Moreover, these inequalities are often obscured or reduced to superficial diversity and inclusion initiatives rather than being addressed as systemic issues. The study emphasizes the importance of committed and critical intersectional approaches to understanding and addressing systemic inequalities in the labor market, highlighting theoretical and epistemological gaps that must be addressed to advance emancipatory practices and policies that directly confront structural racism, patriarchy, and class-based exploitation. The study contributes theoretically by deepening the application of intersectionality in the labor market and by identifying conceptual and epistemological gaps in the literature. Empirically, it provides practical guidance for organizations to transform diversity initiatives into strategic and inclusive actions, integrating multiple social identities into management policies and practices.
INTRODUCTION & AIMS: People with multiple myeloma (MM) experience the lowest health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of all cancer populations. This study aimed to explore the short- and long-term effects of a 12-week individualised exercise intervention on HRQoL, MM symptoms, pain, fatigue, neuromuscular strength, and exploratory plasma omics in people with MM. METHODS: People with MM were randomised to exercise (EX) or wait-list control (CON). The 12-week individualised program included twice-weekly sessions supervised by an AEP, with one additional home-based session prescribed per week. Each 1h session consisted of HIIT, moderate-to-hard resistance and bone loading exercises. Outcomes were assessed before, immediately and 6- and 12-months following the program using validated surveys (EORTC QLQ-C30 with MY20 module, FACT-BP, FACIT-F), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and dynamometry. Plasma omics (metabolomics, proteomics and extracellular vesicles (EV)) were analysed to explore potential biological mediators. RESULTS: Participants with MM (n=60; mean age 65±9 years; 78% male) presented with lytic lesions (78%) and other skeletal complications (13%; back pain, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis). The EX group experienced increases in HRQoL (EORTC QLQ-C30 summary score: +6.3, 95%CI 0.8, 11.9, p=0.03), mediated through improved MM symptoms (EORTC QLQ-MY20: -7.4, 95%CI -15.2, 0.5, p=0.07), bone pain (FACT-BP: +4.4, 95%CI 0.5, 8.3, p=0.03) and cardiorespiratory fitness (V̇O2peak: +3.1, 95%CI 1.4, 4.8, p=0.001) compared to CON; improvements were mostly maintained at follow-up (12 months). Exploratory plasma and plasma EV omics revealed potential biological mediators e.g. increasing primary bile acid biosynthesis pathway in bone pain improvement. No between-group differences (p>0.05) were observed in general pain, fatigue, or neuromuscular strength. CONCLUSION: A 12-week individualised exercise intervention was effective at improving HRQoL, MM symptoms, bone pain and cardiorespiratory fitness, with potential biological mediators identified. The results support the inclusion of exercise as part of standard care to improve the quality of life and health of people with MM.
This study evaluated the cultivation of Euglena gracilis in real urban wastewater as a strategy for organic matter removal, carbon capture, and biomass valorization. Cultivation was conducted at laboratory and pilot scales using different proportions of urban wastewater and a mineral nutrient medium as control. E. gracilis successfully adapted to the wastewater from a university wastewater treatment plant, showing growth kinetics at pilot scale comparable to laboratory-scale systems. High removal efficiencies were achieved for chemical oxygen demand (up to 98.0%) and ammoniacal nitrogen (up to 91.6%), demonstrating the potential of this organism for organic load reduction. Cultivation in undiluted wastewater enhanced carbon incorporation into the biomass, reaching values above 43%, indicating strong carbon assimilation under mixotrophic conditions. The biochemical composition of the biomass varied according to the culture medium, with a clear metabolic shift from protein-rich biomass in mineral medium to carbohydrate accumulation (up to 40.8%) in wastewater-based cultures. These results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating E. gracilis cultivation into urban wastewater systems at pilot scale, combining organic matter removal with carbon capture and the generation of biomass with biotechnological potential.
