With the subsidence of the wave of extreme tendency to 'discontinuity' and finding 'rupture' in different fields of human knowledge, we need to rethink the historical origins of many theoretical approaches. Neglecting the historical currents that have been effective in constructing theories leads to failure in understanding some of their significant features and implications. This article does not seek to anachronistically find Koselleck's 'history of concepts' in the Renaissance. Rather, it seeks the roots and continuities that have distinguished it from structuralist and pure linguistically oriented methodologies that mostly emerged after the contemporary linguistic turn. Thus, this question will be first answered as to why less attention has been paid to the historical roots of the 'history of concepts', despite its well-known relation to Gadamerian hermeneutics and Hegelian thinking. Then, the confluence of the two intellectual currents that contributed to constructing the 'history of concepts' will be addressed.
This essay explores how the relationship between historiography and fiction can contribute to the theory of history. To this end, the novel Jan Karski (2009) by Yannick Haenel will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the reactions of certain historians, especially Jean-Louis Pann & eacute;. His reaction to Haenel's fictional narrative provides insight into the relationship between history and fiction, which will be contrasted with an interpretation of the novelJan Karski. The essay draws on the reflections of historian Michel de Certeau, particularly on the writing of history and its relation to fiction. The aim is to demonstrate how specific historical fiction can enhance theoretical reflection on history by differentiating the concept of truth within fiction from that within historiography. Furthermore, it proposes definitions for terms such as historicity, the process of historicization, and otherness within the context of historical writing.
The article addresses the figure of Ngungunhane, King of Gaza (southern region of Mozambique), who ruled from 1884 to 1895. This work aims to analyze how Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa's "Ualalapi" reappropriates and resignifies the historical figure of Ngungunhane. Our focus will be on understanding how the literary narrative dialogues with and challenges the official representation of Ngungunhane, constructed by Frelimo in the post-independence period as a national hero and symbol of Mozambican identity and the anti-colonial struggle. We will investigate the specific narrative choices in "Ualalapi" that reveal the ambiguity of this historical figure-marked by the subjugation of peoples and strategic alliances with the Portuguese. We will analyze how the work, by doing so, problematizes the official uses of the past and, by analogy, links Ngungunhane to a representation of authoritarianism that can extend to FRELIMO itself and its leadership.
This article challenges the analytical distinction between archival research and historical narrative, showing how this separation has shaped historical theory and its dialogue with literary theory-particularly by limiting it to comparisons between historiographicaland literary texts. To explore this, the article critically examines the positions ofAviezerTucker, J & ouml;rn R & uuml;sen and Alun Munslow, and considers possible contributions from post-classical narratology. Furthermore, based on a case study, it is proposed that the relationship between fact and fiction be analyzed not only in historiographical writing, but also in the very process of the sources' production-that is, in the history of the sources themselves. This perspective opens new avenues for dialogue between historical and literary theory, allowing for an approach in which archival research is not reduced to a mere foundation for narrative construction.
This article aims to reflect on the relationship between time and affect in Annie Ernaux's work, focusing on Shame, published in 1997. For this purpose, in the first part I intend to argue, based on an analysis of the author's interviews and some strategies in her literary texts, that time is the primary theme of herwork. Next, I argue that understanding the complexity of time in Ernaux's writing must involve affects, because they create and organize ways of inhabiting the present, the past and the future. In the final part of the article, I focus on Shame to discuss how the affect that names the book functions as an axial event that divides time, creating another thickness for it.
Helen Caldwell's translation of Machado deAssis's novel Esa & uacute; eJac & oacute; in the United States is set in an interesting context: American politics during the Cold War, the phenomenon of the reception of Jorge Amado's novels in that country, the ignorance of the public in the U.S. about the reality of its southern neighbors and, at some point, the so-called boom of Latin American literature. How does this historical context shape Caldwell's version, or not? How do her translation choices, as well as the problems they raise, illuminate Machado's work and make it resonate with the contemporary world of advanced capitalism and geopolitical domination? In attempting to answer these questions, this article reflects on the constant updating of Machado's text and its responses to history.
This article proposes a comparative analysis of the work of Canadian writer Alice Munro (1931-2024), focusing on the recurrence of the tragic fictional mode in her short stories. The argument converges on a differentiation between eschatological tragedy, with a monotheistic reference, as it appears in the post-apocalyptic literature of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and that which, in our object of study, takes on cosmological contours, based on references to the Greco-Roman tradition and polytheistic cultures of antiquity, although remaining within a domestic and provincial context. Thus, by configuring tragedy in Munro's work as a phenomenon closer to the classicist tradition than to the Judeo-Christian pathos, using correlations with the works of Anne Carson and Ursula K. Le Guin as well, it becomes possible, on the other hand, to point out the contemporary aspect of the historicity implied in the conception of time in her short stories.
This article revisits the work of French thinker Michel de Certeau based on the metaphorology developed by German thinker Hans Blumenberg. Its central argument is to explore the metaphorical dimension of everyday doing-thematized by de Certeau above all in The Invention of Everyday Life I-the arts of doing (1980)-by bringing it closer to what Blumenberg calls absolute metaphor. The idea is to rethink the creative potential of culture, extending the imaginative openness provided by absolute metaphors to everyday practices. To do this, we establish the notion of culture that guides Certeau's thinking and the notion of absolute metaphor, central to Hans Blumenberg's metaphorology, in order to revisit everyday making from an aesthetic and ethical point of view. Central to this argument is the Kantian influence that stands out in the work of both authors. The article also offers an interpretation of Michel de Certeau's use of metaphors in his Invention.
The article analyzes how Tom Jones, a work by Henry Fielding published in 1749, addresses central themes of 18th-century literate culture by examining the differences between historical, biographical, and fictional writings, as well as theater. Focusing on the introductory chapters of the text and its reception at the time, the study explores the repertoire used by critics in the context of the rise of the novel, highlighting discussions about the literary genres prevailing in the English literary field of the 18th century. The study also emphasizes how the notion of performance supported connections between the book form and theatrical acting, considering the establishment of the modern concept of authorship.
