From the end of the 18th century, especially after the defeat of France in the Seven Years War and the independence of the Thirteen Colonies, the British East India Company's colonial expansion in Hindustan was mainly aimed at controlling the European cotton market. This article aims to analyse the consequences of the agrarian transformations that took place in the monsoon belt of Hindustan (Calcutta-Bengal Bay, Banda, Uttar Pradesh-Guyarat) in relation to the origin of the 1817 cholera pandemic. It is in this complex context of changing climatic variables, the fall of the Mughal Empire, the crisis of the Ancien R & eacute;gime in Europe and the controversy surrounding the dominant scientific paradigms (miasmism-contagionism) that we must situate the responses to the health crisis, the first result of which is the process of liberal reconceptualisation -according to Ackernecht- of the new pestilence, known from 1832 (when it reached London and Paris) as & laquo;Asiatic cholera morbus & raquo;. In turn, this semantic reformulation of the infection would strengthen the myth of the East as the origin of evil, so that, during the second half of the nineteenth century, a new & laquo;scientific & raquo; theory of the legitimacy of colonialism takes shape.
On the following pages we introduce a multidisciplinary study that, through the methodology of historical source analysis, archaeological surveys, and the use of pis, has made it possible to reconstruct and analyse the original characteristics of the Roman road that connected the territory in the vicinity of the city of Almeria, the ancient Portus Magnus. Specifically, we shall concentrate on the coastal section of the road, in the current capital of the region, which is the focus of our study. Thanks to this article we have been able to document the scarce preserved remains of the primitive road still visible today, as well as to offer an interpretation of its historical use. We shall also consider the indicators that allow us to qualify it as a Roman road.
This article presents a diachronic-comparative study of the planimetries made by different specialists based on the structures built and dug in the rock of the private tombs during the Middle Kingdom and the beginning of the XVIII Dynasty in the Theban necropolis, using the funerary complexes of viziers Dagi (TT103), Ipi (TT315) and Rekhmire (TT100) as comparators. The analysis has focused on the different characteristics of the constructive typologies that developed throughout this period, based on the features of the selected tombs. The aim is to discern whether an evolutionary thread can be discerned. The comparison of the elements described in the sources studied shows that the characteristic architectural elements of the Middle Kingdom remained in use in the construction of funerary complexes at the dawn of the 18th Dynasty, which represents the continuity of previous traditions.
The electoral failure of Christian democracy in Portugal and Spain during the transition to democracy in the 1970s is one of the great questions surrounding the complex structure of the centre-right in both countries. Contrary to all predictions made at the time, the political brands identified with the Christian democratic project never came to play the role they played in other European countries. To understand this peculiarity, the aim is to analyse the evolution of political Catholicism in both countries, the structure of the different parties that aspired to represent Christian democracy, the ideological programmes defended in that countries undergoing change, the attitude of the Catholic Church and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, and the composition of their electoral bases and the results obtained in the first elections. In short, the purpose of this article is to draw a comparative path between the Christian democratic experiences of Spain and Portugal in order, through their similarities and differences, to understand the reasons for this singular transition of the Portuguese and Spanish centre-right. Through primary sources -internal documents and press material- as well as the extensive bibliographical material existing from the historiography of both countries, the aim is to achieve a better understanding of the failure of Christian democracy as a political alternative in Spain and Portugal.
As part of the teaching of History, the future is a fundamental issue for addressing temporality and developing historical consciousness, in the sense of understanding the present through the past and making decisions to critically construct the future. Based on this premise, this paper presents a comparative study aimed at understanding the conceptions of future teachers regarding the future and their teaching practices in three European countries: Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Using an interpretive approach based on a multiple case study, existing trends are characterized by combining qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques. The results show that future teachers have conceptions of the future marked by technological and pessimistic views, with nuances depending on the context. Similarly, there is an observable difficulty among them in critically arguing the existing influences between current education and the future. From their arguments, three types of influences are identified: intrinsic, linear, and linear-social. Finally, concerning models of conceptions about Education for the Future, three trends are characterized: political model, historical time-centered model, and methodology-centered model. Although the first two are predominant, the methodology-centered model also has a significant presence. This last issue, along with the technological and pessimistic views of the future, reinforces the need to continue working to include future studies from a critical perspective in teacher training.
The construction patterns and theformsof utilization ofthe women's confinementspaces of the Good Shepherd reflect the persistent influence of Catholic doctrine on the Congregation's prison architecture during the penitentiary reform process that was spreading throughout Latin America. In this sense, these construction patterns, designed by the Congregation of the Good Shepherd for the rehabilitation and redemption of female offenders, were framed within the long-standing religious architectural tradition of monastic-cloistered design. This architectural approach contrasted with the scientific penitentiary precepts expressed by the radial design, which represented the effectiveness and efficiency of the Auburnian system of male rehabilitation. In this paper, we propose that this radical difference between men's and women's prison buildings was due to contemporary social gender stereotypes and schemes, in which women were considered less dangerous or fearsome than men and, therefore, deemed less in need of penal control than men. Their role upon reintegrating into society was conceived under an ideal of feminine domesticity linked to the tasks & laquo;proper to their sex & raquo;. With these considerations, the study focuses on prison architectural designs and their importance in the reproduction of these gender roles. To this end, the architectural characteristics of Buen Pastor women's prisons in Chile and Argentina are studied, from the establishment of the order in 1855 to the construction of the Good Shepherd's Asylum in Cordoba in 1899.
What footwear did the people of Burgos use in the 18th century? The compilation of 936 inventories of goods for urban households in the eighteenth century offer a glimpse of the footwear worn by the neighbours of this city, both men and women. The first problem to be explained revolves around why only 36.3 % of these had shoes, slippers, boots, ankle boots or pumps. Secondly, it must be concluded that on this concert of material culture, too, there was a marked differentiation according to the different socio-professional categories, social status or levels of wealth. Thirdly, it is essential to analyse the contrast found between the different types of footwear over time. Whether in terms of the number of shoes or the quality (price) of the footwear, the details of a ternary society of the Ancien Regime are revealed.
This article examines the anthropological approach developed by Pedro Lain Entralgo in La medicina hipocratica (1970). It explores in detail his interpretation of physis and physis anthropine in the Hippocratic Corpus and considers their relevance for the study of Greek otherness. At the same time, it highlights the doctrinal limits Lain Entralgo imposes by introducing the Christian-rooted notion of the person and by denying the existence of Greek otherness.
In 1974, Chilean high school teacher C & eacute;sar Navarrete -self-appointed Lonko Kilap & aacute;n- published the book El origen griego de los araucanos, in which he defended the Spartan origin of the & laquo;Araucans & raquo; as an Aryan race distinct from the Mapuche. First, the paper analyses the different aspects of the theory, and its geographical, linguistic, ethnohistorical, archaeological and anthropological arguments. Next, the proposal is contextualised as an heir of three great traditions on Chilean identity in its relationship with European Antiquity: the modern myths about the Greek colonisation of America, the racial theories developed between the 19th and 20th centuries, and the reference to Sparta in the development of eugenic ideologies, emphasising the importance of the enlightened naturalist Juan Ignacio Molina and the essayist Nicol & aacute;s Palacios. Finally, it examines the immediate conditions of the book's publication, with regard to the author and his role as a supposed representative of the indigenous movement, the involvement of the prestigious Editorial Universitaria and the media coverage that the work received, based on the data that can be extracted from the press and its own publications. It is concluded, on the particular case, that the possibility and repercussion of Navarrete's proposal is intimately linked to the cultural and political context of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship. In general, the paper highlights the interest of analysing pseudoscientific material from the perspective of cultural and intellectual history on visions of the past.
The main aim of this article is to analyse the resistance strategies developed by subaltern groups-anarchists, mapuche-williche and urban settlers-of the Osorno province (Chile) from 1994 to 2011. The analysis is based on the concept of repertoires of resistance, derived from that of repertoire of contention proposed by Charles Tilly. Three types of sources are mainly used: 1) oral sources, obtained through in-depth interviews conducted between 2021 and 2022 with members of the abovementioned groups, who participated in their resistance processes during the 1994-2011 period; 2) press sources, namely the newspaper El Austral de Osorno, for the same period; and 3) texts produced by the discussed groups. The article concludes that, both in terms of repertoire and performance, there are no major differences between the three groups studied. However, there are differences or specificities in the most basic unit of the repertoire of resistance, that is, in the resistance actions. This specificity is apparently due to the fact that it is at this level that the different subaltern groups are able to express their identity, their objectives, and their own characteristics as a group in the most important way.
The aim of this paper is to relate the associationism centred on the Roma with the rest of the historiography on the neighbourhood movement during the second Franco regime in Madrid. The Roma remain largely unknown and even more so the history from which to think about their political articulation. The first experiences in the capital were pro-Roma initiatives and their premises, functioning and interaction with the Roma will be examined based on two specific cases, the Secretariados Gitanos and the Asociaci & oacute;n Desarrollo Gitano. This first mobilization was orchestrated by non-Roma, mainly priests, activists, academics and architects. The analysis will have as a backdrop the urban social history of Madrid, a city that during its expansion in the second half of the twentieth century faced a great urban crisis that generated huge pockets of poverty materialized, among other things, in an unprecedented shantytown. In this panorama of substandard housing and informal urbanism, the Roma played a leading role, and their negative social fit in the city, caused by the discriminatory treatment of the regime, largely conditioned that political and associative mobilization. To resolve the study, sources related to the creation of the groups, reports and documents produced within them, as well as oral testimonies are proposed. All this will allow us to conclude that the path of Roma political participation was not free of prejudices and that, in turn, associationism was also linked to ethnicity, thus showing the heterogeneity of the citizen struggle.
