Abstract This article aims to understand the educational, cultural and social practices that constituted the dispositions of the female gender habitus provided to the secondary school students in the education institutions managed by the Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora [Daughters of Mary Help of Christians] in the south of the former Mato Grosso, in the period from 1942 to 1961. The documentary contribution used the crossing of sources, such as school documents from the school institutions, the school periodicals “Ecos Juvenis” [Juvenile Echoes] and the memorial works “Auxiliadora 70 anos” [70 years with Mary Help of Christians] and “O Profeta do Pantanal” [The Prophet of the Pantanal]. The sources were analyzed using the theoretical notions of Pierre Bourdieu and his interlocutors. The results show the importance of school institutions in the education of women in the south of the former Mato Grosso. Through their educational, cultural and social practices focused on domestic activities and caring for the family and home, they reinforced the female gender habitus.
