After a brief introduction to the concept of history in the Spanish Golden Age, the study proposes a connection between the substantive nature of historical discourse and the notion of verisimilitude upheld by Golden Age historians. It then discusses letters from the War of the Communities of Castile transcribed in Historia de la vida y hechos del emperador Carlos V by Fray Prudencio de Sandoval, as well as the letter from the Duke of Alba to Pope Paul IV, summarized in Historia General del Mundo by Herrera y Tordesillas and in Historia de Felipe II by Cabrera de C & oacute;rdoba. Also examined is the letter from Antonio P & eacute;rez to the Princess of B & eacute;arn, very abbreviated in both Herrera and Cabrera, along with that of Fray Diego de Chaves addressed to King Philip II, which Cabrera de C & oacute;rdoba transcribes while incorporating passages of his own elaboration.
This article explores the use and function shifts of the highly frequent discourse particle en plan in the bilingual speech of young adults from Gibraltar (aged 16-35). Widely used in informal Spanish from the Iberian Peninsula, en plan is examined here among English-dominant speakers, with particular focus on cases where it appears as the only switched element in a turn. The study reveals how en plan is undergoing functional and positional changes, potentially reflecting processes of grammaticalization or pragmaticalization influenced by language contact. Using an interactional and conversational approach, the study highlights notable patterns of turn-final en plan, offering insights into how bilingualism affects discourse markers. The findings contribute to research on contact linguistics and open avenues for examining prosodic and functional changes experienced by discourse markers in contact situations.
The model of discursive traditions has proved to be very useful for the analysis of linguistic features shared by two or more traditions. In this paper we analyze eleven court missives that, due to their intrahistorical content, are similar to accounts of events, although they maintain the rhetorical epistolary molds, so they could be called letters of relations. The mechanisms of cohesion, so much studied for the accounts of events, have not been highlighted for this discursive (sub)tradition despite their relevance for the illation of the narrative.
This article presents an investigation in the field of verbal semantics, focusing on how phase periphrases affect the aspectual class of a lexical verb, that is, on the phenomenon of coercion. Our approach is based on Croft's proposal for the analysis of lexical aspectual classes. This model has been extended by two new categories: locus and energy. Our theoretical starting point is Cognitive Linguistics, thus, based on cognitive representation and in order to demonstrate the viability of our proposal, the different coercion processes detected in our analysis have been computationally implemented. For this purpose, we have developed a set of heuristic rules, which allow us to represent the changes that the periphrasis exerts on the lexical verb (coercion). Finally, applying these rules also allows us to obtain automatically the interpretation of the clause.
In this article we aim to examine the processes of linguistic refinement that occur in the adaptation of epistolary discourse, elaborated from the rhetorical and stylistic parameters of the ars dictaminis, to the lyrical mould of the Romancero and the theatre of the Golden Age. We use the corpus that we have compiled with several versions of the supposed letter written by La Cava, a pseudo-historical character who emerged under the protection of late medieval historiography. The processes of discourse accommodation show both the weight of the initial discursive tradition, in its morphology and linguistic texture, and the demands of the drama and metrification of the poetic style and discursive traditions in which it is inserted.
This paper is an approach to the linguistic-discursive study of J. Eusebio Llano Zapata's letter about the Lima earthquake in 1746. The main objective is to vindicate the discursive tradition of the "events reports" (relaciones de sucesos in Spanish) as a valid source for linguistic studies. Llano Zapata's letter presents some characteristics that make it suitable for other specific objectives: it is an 18th-century American text, and, therefore, we will analyze some possible American dialectal features and other Early Modern Spanish lexical and morpho-syntactical phenomena. We will also focus on the epistolary shape to analyze the discursive links between the events and the epistolary macrogenre.
In this paper, we analyze the use of the epistle as a fictional resource in the literary works of the novelist Mateo Alem & aacute;n. In his books, the author incorporates three epistles as elements embedded within the narrative, two of them in Segunda parte de Guzm & aacute;n de Alfarache (1604) and one of them in San Antonio de Padua (1604). The aim is to study the grammatical, morphological and syntactic traits, the discursive uses and the degree of syntactic elaboration of these fictionalized epistles. Another goal is to determine if they are the result of the imitation of the epistolary tradition prevalent at the end of the 16th century or whether they reflect the discursive traits of the literary texts (narrative or proemial). Therefore, we will conclude whether this textual tool is consistent with the epistolary discourse and it is embedded in the narrative as an external element or whether it is an extension of the narrative discourse itself that fails or does not pretend to emulate the form of a traditional letter.
The aim of this work is to compare the versions of the letters exchanged between the Prince of Wales and Henry of Trast & aacute;mara on the eve of the Battle of N & aacute;jera, included in the Vulgar version of the Cr & oacute;nica del rey don Pedro I and in the Libro de las buenas andan & ccedil;as e fortunas. Through textual collation and analysis of possible stylistic and argumentative differences, I aim to describe the historical context in which they were written and the textual history of these missives to typify their particularity within the epistolary genre; determine how they were retextualized and through what resources; and, finally, ascertain with what intention they were included in two opposing models of late medieval historiographical discourse.
This study intends to describe the contact variety of speakers of Spanish origin in France, which still counts very few linguistic studies. To this end, this work focuses on the phenomena of morphosyntactic and lexical contact through data collected in the FRESCO corpus and other available oral corpora. After briefly recalling the history of the presence of Spanish in France, in order to better understand the sociolinguistic context in which this variety of contact has developed, the collected linguistic data are presented, then described on the basis of explicit categories of contact, and analysed. In conclusion, we consider the longitudinal dimension for the two samples under study, collected in 1992 and 2021 respectively.
Opinion journalism was born in the 18th century thanks to the first "spectators" -periodical publications of an essayistic nature. In them we find a new resource, the letters from supposed readers, which provide the journalist with the opportunity to present various points of view or new topics, and give rise to expressing their opinion on various topics. In this paper we analyse the letters included in La Pensadora gaditana (C & aacute;diz, 1673-74), with the aim of explaining how intensification procedures are a useful pragmatic strategy for the communicative purpose of this peculiar type of epistolary discourse. This could be either as reinforcement of the author's argument, or for the purpose of (dis)courtesy. On the other hand, we present a stylometric analysis aimed at objectively measuring the textual distance that exists between readers' letters and the author's responses. The stylometry seems to confirm that the texts are the work of the same person, the one hiding behind the pseudonym Beatriz Cienfuegos, which supports the widespread opinion that the letters from supposed readers are just an artifice typical of the new journalistic genre.
In this paper, we examine the literature on the study of epistolary writing in Spanish and provide a contextual framework for the articles included in this section. We consider studies on discourse construction, medieval dictaminal rhetoric, the formal conventions of this discursive tradition, and other key concepts such as linguistic refashioning or retextualisation.
This paper examines the use of adverbs from a meta-operational perspective, with particular emphasis on the expression of the speaker's or subject's intention. By selecting specific operators-such as adrede, intencionadamente, and others-, while excluding alternative expressions that fulfill a similar metalinguistic function, the enunciator, as the central agent in the communicative process, prompts the interlocutor to engage in an inferential process. The nature of this inferential process varies according to the operator employed. The study is grounded in the hypothesis that, when analyzed through the lens of meta-operational criteria, adverbial expressions that appear synonymous reveal some distinctions. These distinctions pertain both to the type of information conveyed and to the degree of the speaker's commitment to the utterance. The objective is to develop a classification of adverbs and adverbial phrases that convey intentionality, thereby elucidating the specific nuances they introduce into the communicative act. To achieve this aim, the study will analyze authentic language data, focusing on the contexts in which speakers employ the selected operators. This empirical analysis seeks to illustrate how meaning is shaped by the choice of adverbial operator within real communicative interactions.
This work distinguishes approximation from vagueness and problematizes the connection between both linguistic phenomena. From a semasiological point of view, I argue that certain forms like approximately differ from others like almost. These forms correspond to two types of vagueifiers: those vagueifiers of the type-approximately and vagueifiers of the type-almost. I call the former ones approximators and the latter ones approximatives. Approximators suspend the truth-value assignment of a given utterance and denote vagueness prototypically, while approximatives trigger a negative scope, involving the phenomenon here defined as approximation. Although both phenomena cover different functional domains, approximation and vagueness are akin, as an analysis of the semantic implications of their forms reveal.
