This paper aims to argue that the specific language of theater has no words, based on the ideas of Antonin Artaud, an important french teatre teorist. In this sense, the second person perspective of mental attributions plays a central role in enabling the actor to appropriate the l anguage of theatre. The text is divided in four sections. The first one addresses the mental states attributions of mental states and their importance for communication. The second section is about the relevance of the actor's appropriation of emotional expressions in his body's muscles in order to guide the spectator into the scene, synchronizing rhythm and breathing. The third section presents the second-person perspective of mental attributions proposed by P & eacute;rez and Gomila. To conclude, the idea that the proper language of theatre can only be expressed by the second-person perspective will be defended.
Text resulting from the lecture presented at the XIV EBICC, held at the Federal University of Paran & aacute; in September 2024. It analyzes narrative as a mode of meaning production that substantiates human thought. Four directions are explored: the cognitive sense of the stories we tell each other, the cognitive benefits of elementary narrative forms, the inherent limits of narrative meaning production, the conditions of continuity between the most elementary narrative cognition and narrative culture in general.
Faced with a puzzling narrative in film, literature, or video games, audience members may approach a sense of almost understanding of what is going on, how the events are related, and so on. This feeling-which I call a "near-aha moment" in this article-is particularly common when engaging with narratives that deploy various formal devices to create cognitive-level complexity. Exploring a concrete instance of this experience via the narrative-focused video game Immortality (Barlow 2022), this article argues that these near-aha moments shed light on the embodied nature of storytelling-how narrative builds on more basic, bodily and affective patterns of interaction with the world. Through playful complexity, the failure or disruption of narrative sense-making reveals the cognitive structures underlying narrative experience itself.
In this paper, we propose an analysis of the reading process in the light of Peircian semiotics, in line with cognitive theories, especially cognitive narratology. Our hypothesis is that semiotics makes it possible to identify authorial intentions for producing interpretative effects by offering a precise vocabulary for identifying clue-like signs which, when perceived in the reading process, can prompt the reader to infer properties of complex characters. We explore this hypothesis by analysing the indexing of a specific fictional character: Rubi & atilde;o, the protagonist of Quincas Borba, by Machado de Assis. Emphasis will be placed on Machado de Assis' intention to provoke abductive inferences in the reader through the construction of the complex character of Rubi & atilde;o. Finally, we point out that the heuristic potential of semiotics makes it possible to build a rich dialogue with literary theory and, in particular, with cognitive theories of reading and narrative.
This paper presents the current discussion on whether our aptitude for narrative fictionalization is a natural adaptation or whether it has another nature (exaptationist, technological). The background question is whether our species has not just survived the risk of confusion between the factual and the imaginary brought about by fiction, but whether fiction has helped our species to survive. Promoting a critical stance, this proposal analyzes the conceptual assumptions about fiction involved in this discussion, as well as some obstacles to adaptationist hypotheses. Currently, our aptitude for fiction is by default treated as an evolutionary byproduct or exaptation. Perhaps it may be useful to explore such aptitude conceptually as technological.
This article argues that human experience is inherently organized in narrative form and that narrativization functions as a core cognitive device in the temporal architecture of memory. Drawing on findings from neuroscience of memory, cognitive and developmental psychology, philosophy of mind, linguistics and cultural evolution, the text examines how episodic memory depends on the construction of plots that link otherwise dispersed events into coherent sequences. At the neural level, the hippocampus is described as an integrator that "stitches together" distant episodes, in close coordination with prefrontal executive functions that impose temporal order, select relevance and support causal inference. At the linguistic level, verbal tenses, temporal and causal connectives, deixis and referential cohesion provide the syntactic and pragmatic scaffolding that turns raw succession into structured stories. The article also analyses how temporal, causal-motivational, thematic and cultural narrative coherence can break down in clinical conditions such as schizophrenia, ADHD and fluent aphasia, revealing the dependence of selfhood and autobiographical identity on narrative capacities. Finally, it explores interdisciplinary implications of conceiving narrative as a basic cognitive operation, outlining consequences for mental health interventions (narrative therapies and neuropsychological rehabilitation), educational practices that mobilize storytelling, and emerging fields such as narrative neuroscience and narrative psychology.
This paper analyzes how The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017) represents different forms of female intelligence through narrative strategies grounded in comic performance, social adaptation, and cultural identity. Drawing from research that correlates humor and cognition, as well as theories of interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence, the paper argues that the characters Midge, Rose, and Astrid articulate narrative models of cognition and moral judgment. These models organize their perception of the world, social interactions and identities. Anchored in the idea that narratives do not merely reflect but actively shape experience, the series is understood as a fictional laboratory where female intelligence, often silenced or misrepresented, is dramatized and reconfigured. The paper contributes to the interdisciplinary debate on narrative and human cognition by focusing on how fictional narratives enact plural and situated forms of intelligence.
This paper argues that our capacity to understand narratives and our abilities to understand each other's minds are intertwined. To show the connection between these two abilities, in the first place I clarify what I mean by narration, and I present the central theses of the second-person perspective of psychological understanding as developed in P & eacute;rez and Gomila (2022). Then, I show how narrative comprehension is linked with the ability to understand minds. Finally, I discuss why this entanglement of narratives and psychological concepts leads us to simultaneously adopt multiple perspectives in the comprehension of every narrative, and how the second-person perspective can shed some light in narrative understanding through a couple of examples from the arts.
This article investigates the relationship between language, cognition, and narrative from the perspective of sociocognitive semantics. It argues that language is not an isolated formal system, but a cognitive activity grounded in bodily and social experience, structured through cognitive models such as schemas, metaphors, and narratives. Narrative, as the temporal and spatial organization of events, is presented as a fundamental mechanism of human cognition, linking mental processes and linguistic structures. This study highlightsthe role of cultural cognition , understood as a distributed and emergent system shaped by social interaction and transmitted through language. The imaginative capacity of the mind is emphasized as central to meaning construction, challenging the traditional view of language as a literal representation of reality. Drawing on the work of Lakoff, Langacker, Turner, Talmy, and Sharifian, the article argues that language activates complex cognitive networks, constituting a creative and dynamic system. It concludes that narrative is not merely a form of literary expression, but a cognitive and cultural structure that underpins human experience and guides meaning construction in everyday language.
The dialogue between Psychoanalysis and Literature continues to be potentially fruitful for both fields. Based on this premise, this study aims to: (i) investigate the articulation between memory and psychic trauma in the novel Spider, by the British writer Patrick McGrath, and (ii) relate it to Sigmund Freud's formulations on such themes and, additionally, on psychic elaboration, within the limits of the first topic, that is, without considering the 1920 tournant. Overall, we argue that, McGrath's work suggests that memory does not have a merely evocative nature, which was evidenced by Freud in his early texts. Furthermore, we understand that the British writer emphasizes the issue of the intensity mobilized by a psychic trauma, while the father of Psychoanalysis also does so, with the difference that he is not guided by the internal-external dichotomy. The parallels drawn here between McGrath and Freud indicate the existence of significant similarities between the understanding of the human mind of the aforementioned authors.
In Dom Casmurro, a classic novel of Brazilian literature, the narrator refers to himself under two names, Bentinho and Dom Casmurro, an aspect that denotes a profound transformation undergone by the character throughout the narrative. In this article, through a semiotic analysis based on Kockelman's (2013) proposal, we suggest a systematization of how this transformation takes place, thus explaining how the changes perceived by the reader are constructed by the author. To this end, we offer a heuristic division of the novel, understanding that it can be divided into two parts, distinguished by the narrative emphasis and agency of certain characters over others, facts that modify not only dynamic aspects of the plot, but also the narrative voice itself. Through the semiotic analysis, we identify the most recurrent characteristics of the protagonist, analyzing them to verify whether they are maintained or modified (and, if altered, how they are then transformed and into what else they are converted). Based on the aforementioned heuristic division and character analysis, we seek to explain how Machado de Assis mobilizes changes in key figures without disrupting the reading process and, at the same time, how this construction shapes a process that we term here the "reading experience of change".
