The political and socio-cultural guidelines, correspondence and networks of the officials of the Holy Office enable us to analyse the socio-political, economic and symbolic roles played by certain key figures of the tribunal across the vast territory of the Catholic Monarchy. Furthermore, the study of these figures can be approached from various methodological perspectives, which undoubtedly enrich the analysis. The aim is thus to highlight differences and similarities in the actions of certain ministers and officials in two specific districts, Sicily and Mexico, during the 16th and 17th centuries. This is an exploratory study that seeks to reconstruct some examples that reveal more similarities than contrasts, focusing in particular on two inquisitorial ministers: Bartolomé Sebastián and Pedro de Medina.
Juan de Épila, a friar of the Dominican order, was a papal inquisitor in the Kingdom of Aragon before the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition. He joined the Inquisition as Torquemada's delegate in 1484, who appointed him inquisitor of Valencia. In this capacity, he clashed with the local authorities, who unsuccessfully attempted to prevent the establishment of the new tribunal. In the following years, his actions led to a significant intensification of the persecution of converts. In 1487, he was removed from his post and returned to Zaragoza, where he became prior of the Convent of Santo Domingo. In 1492, he once again joined an inquisitorial tribunal, this time operating in the dioceses of Huesca and Lleida. Regarding his character, we have the opinions of one of his fellow citizens, the young cleric Juan de la Caballería, who in 1486 had to answer for them before the court of Valencia and Friar Épila himself.
