This article investigates the mobilization of discursive impoliteness strategies in the construction of the protagonist of the American television series House M.D.. The aim of the study is to analyze how Dr. Gregory House engages in unmitigated face-threatening acts (FTAs) during his interactions, describing the pragmatic and inferential functioning of such utterances within context. The theoretical framework is grounded in Pragmatics, combining Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory with Jonathan Culpeper’s (2011) Impoliteness Theory. The methodology is qualitative, descriptive, and micro-analytical, focusing on a purposive sample of five scenes drawn from the 1st, 4th, and 8th seasons. The analyses reveal the presence of direct strategies without redressive action (bald on record) and the use of sarcasm in both interpersonal and institutional contexts. The findings suggest that the utterances under examination fulfill varied pragmatic functions in terms of power alignment and relational management within the hospital environment, and that the interpretation of their effects must be understood in direct connection with the sequential dynamics of conversational turns and the conventions of dramatic fiction.
This article investigates evidence of victim-blaming in victim discourse, employing Fauconnier's (1994) Theory of Mental Spaces as a theoretical-methodological approach, and articulating it with the notion of implicit argumentation. The Theory of Mental Spaces allows us to map how base spaces and evoked spaces connect and influence the production of meaning. Methodologically, the analysis evaluates linguistic and semantic indicators that reveal orientations attributed to the victim, negotiations of agency, and narrative strategies that can function as evidence of victim-blaming. The article will analyze how the activation of mental spaces and linguistic organization in the discourse of victims of violence contribute to the construction of evaluative meanings, highlighting processes of implicit argumentation that favor interpretations of victim-blaming. The corpus consists of discursive excerpts extracted from publicly accessible (online) material, which compiles accounts from women victims of violence. The results indicate that the activated mental spaces and linguistic choices of the victims reveal discursive-cognitive dynamics that organize the construction of interpretative scenarios of violence. In these scenarios, the victim is frequently configured as an evaluable agent, since the mappings between mental spaces reorder roles of agency and responsibility, allowing actions, reactions, and emotional states to be interpreted as explanatory factors of the violence.
A pesquisa adota abordagem qualitativo-interpretativista e procedimentos netnográficos.
This article analyzes, from a Pragmatic perspective, how candidates for the presidency of the republic mobilize conversational implicatures in electoral interviews and briefings to manage their public image during the 2022 elections. Based on Pragmatics, the theoretical framework centers on Paul Grice’s theory of implicatures and the Cooperative Principle, in addition to concepts of face preservation and political discourse. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative and interpretive approach, examining excerpts from the Jornal Nacional (Rede Globo) interviews in 2022 with candidates Jair Bolsonaro, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Simone Tebet. The results demonstrate that violations of conversational maxims—especially those of Relation, Quantity, and Manner—are not communicative failures but conscious strategic resources. The study concludes that the candidates, as interviewees, utilize implicit meanings to avoid accountability, shift thematic focus, and build legitimacy, revealing that political effectiveness in these interactions depends on the ability to negotiate meanings and manage the effects of public interactional face exposure.
