Global change is induced by human activities and these changes impact tourism development. The transportation system especial y aviation consumed by tourists and accommodation facilities in coastal destinations release massive greenhouse gases and contribute to global change. The ocean is very important to the society and the economy, and coastal tourism is one of the main human activities in the coastal zone. Coastal tourism resources are rich in China, and coastal tourism plays a decisive role in the marine economy. Here, we analyze problems and chal enges during the development of coastal tourism resources from the global change perspective, and identify key factors for the future and ecologically friendly coastal tourism resource development and management under the framework of sustainable development. Based on our ifndings we recommend changing the pattern and products of coastal tourism to develop low carbon coastal tourism based on the idea of“green thinking”;more attention on developments of creative tourism products such as ecotourism and alternative tourism;changes to coastal tourism resource utilization by developing low carbon coastal tourism, advocating carbon emission reduction, promoting carbon compensation and carbon economy, and encouraging new energy saving technology application. Stakeholders also need to be considered. All these measures should be implemented and optimized during the process of planning-management-monitoring-evaluation in the dynamic model. Due to limited data on coastal tourism resource development and management in the global change perspective, part of our reference data is from whole tourism research results and this is a shortcoming of our approach.
Global change is a generally accepted scientific fact which is highly possibly induced by human activities and impacts tourism development. The transportation system especially the aviation consumed by tourists and the accommodation facilities in coastal destinations releases massive greenhouse gases and contributes to global change. The ocean is very important to the human society and economy, and coastal tourism is one of the main human activities occurred in the coastal zone.Coastal tourism is also the most traditional, the fastest growing and major form of tourism which is the world's largest industrial(group) now.Coastal tourism resources are rich in China, and coastal tourism plays a decisive role in the marine economy. Sustainable tourism is to satisfy the need of tourist and local community and strengthen the protection of environment and chances of future development at the same time.Hence it is suggested analyze the problems and challenges during the development of coastal tourism resources under the background of global change, and identify the key factors for the future ecological friendly coastal tourism resource development and management under the framework of sustainable development, and for the dynamic model building and the decision making.Change the pattern and products of coastal tourism to develop low carbon coastal tourism based on the idea of "green thinking".Pay more attention to developments of creative tourism products such as ecotourism and alternative tourism.Change the way of coastal tourism resource utilization by developing low carbon coastal tourism, advocating carbon emission reduction, promoting carbon compensation and carbon economy, and encouraging new energy saving technology application.Take stakeholders' collaboration into account which includes encouraging the community involvement, balancing the stakeholders' benefits and interests when concerning coastal tourism resource development, especially the local communities',tourists' and governments' way of looking at,attitudes, sense of responsibility and consensus to global change is of vital importance. All the measures should be taken into account and optimized in the process of planning-management-monitoring-evaluation in the dynamic model. Due to the limited available data of the coastal tourism resource development and management under the background of global change, part of the reference data is from the whole tourism research results which are the shortcomings of the research.Considering the continuous attention and thorough research on global change and the status and importance of the coastal tourism resource development and management in the tourism industry, the related research should be strengthened and further spread.
The paper attempted to employ the water footprint approach to calculate the situation of water resource in Jiangsu Province between 2000 and 2009, and investigate the changes of water utilization and water pressure in economic growth by introducing the conceptual model of "re-linking" and "de-linking". The total water footprint of Jiangsu was on the slightly rise from 699.82 in 2000 to 773.77 billion cubic meters in 2009, mainly consists of the agricultural water and the industrial water. Simultaneously, the water utilization level kept continuous growth, increasing by 2.77 times in the last decade. However, the weak "de-linking" and strong "de-linking" status between water resource and economic growth accounted for two-thirds and one-third of the sample years, separately. The alternative change of weak "de-linking" and strong "de-linking" status showed the pressure of water resource still existed in the process of rapid industrialization and urbanization, and, therefore, strategies should be adopted for more vigorous economic development and consistent water resource use in Jiangsu.
This paper examines resource uses on the coast of Jiangsu Province, China. It focuses on mudflat development and describes and evaluates the diverse resource uses, such as agriculture, fisheries, tourism and nature reserves, harbors and industrial development, and the salt and the chemical industry, that are found there. Continuous population growth and economic demands have resulted in conflicts between the multiple uses and mudflat protection. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to utilization efficiency and high value-added mudflat products. A conceptual framework is presented to guide mudflat development and suitable uses for each county are suggested to support local livelihoods and maintain healthy ecological processes.
Tidal flat is a complex and frangible system with influences on both nature and social economy. It plays a crucial role to living and nonliving resources along China coast. However, continuous growth in population and economy and rapid urbanization have resulted in conflicts among multiple uses of tidal flat, such as tidal reclamation and coastal aquaculture. The inappropriate development patterns lead to environmental degradation and loss on ecosystem functions. To balance anthropogenic activities and environmental protection, suitable development patterns are urgently required in tidal flat study on a sustainable basis. The wide tidal flat in Jiangsu province is formed via river-sea interaction.Tidal flat resources in this area are abundant and the total area is increasing. The exploitation condition of tidal flat resources in south Jiangsu is superior to that in the northern part.According to the natural quality of tidal flat,we have considered society, economy, resource allocation, technology, and other factors to study the development patterns, following the rule of accommodating measures to local conditions.Meanwhile,social-economic and environmental issues emerged in the process of development were indentified and suitable development patterns for this region were obtained. We have rich experiences in traditional conprehensive development of tidal flat agriculture. However, suitable tidal flat for farming is limited now and we should put more strength in developing the range and depth of suitable pattern for these areas. The development of tidal flat fishery has become the support of marine economy and should be the prior development pattern in the future.Tourism development of natural reserve in tidal flat areas and industrial area development of tidal flat port are the breakthrough points for marine economy and thus we are devoting major efforts to it.The tidal flat of north Jiangsu is superior in development condition for salt-marine chemical industry. Therefore,we should focus on improving marine chemical industry to bring new vitality. The tidal flat for developing agriculture, fishery and salt industry are zonally located in the middle, southern and northern part of Jiangsu Province, while tidal flat natural reserves for tourism and the harbor-industrial areas are scattered in the three developing zones due to various resource conditions. The radial sandy ridges of the Yellow Sea along Jiangsu coast are important tidal flat resources and also suitable for developing fishery, harbors and tourism.Developing tidal flat and maritime of eastern Jiangsuis not only the strategic target of Jiangsu province in the 21 century, but also an important part of marine economy and new a direction of economic development. This study can provide scientific basis for economic development in Jiangsu and has realistic meanings.
