The Aj-Bogd massif, located in the Trans-Altai Gobi within the Hercynides of the Central Asian fold belt, is composed of rocks from two main intrusion phases. The rocks of the early phase are represented by two-feldspar granites. while the late phase is characterized by alkali-feldspar granites. During the reconstruction of the thermal history of these granites zircon was chosen as a mineral-indicator of the temperature regime of their formation. Two main approaches to using this mineral as a geothermometer have been proposed: the zircon saturation index and the zirconium-hafnium geothermometer. Both approaches demonstrate a similar thermal picture of the formation of granites from Aj-Bogd massif. Alkaline feldspar granites of the late intrusion phase crystallized at temperatures of 810–850°C while two-feldspar granites of the early phase formed at temperatures of 700–770°C. According to thermobarogeochemical studies of melt inclusions in zircon of late-phase alkali-feldspar granites, a similar temperature range of their formation was defined (825–850°C). All obtained data of the formation temperatures of studied granites from Aj-Bogd massif indicate a significantly higher (by 100–120°C) temperature of formation of alkali-feldspar granites compared to earlier two-feldspar granites. The significantly higher crystallization temperature of late alkali feldspar granites allow us to suggest the appearance of an additional heat source that could be mantle derived melts. The evidence of such melt participation in the formation of Aj-Bogd massif are mafic dikes that separate granites of two intrusion phases. The contrast temperature regime of the calc-alkaline and alkaline intrusion phases close in time was determined for the first time in this work.
Oscillatory zoning in tennantite-(Fe) crystals found in carbonate–sulfide aggregates at the Darasun gold deposit has been studied. Similar elements have been distinguished in zoned crystals: core, “identical oscillatory rhythm,” rhythms with crystallographic and wavy oscillatory zoning, and rim with poorly defined fine oscillatory zoning. Oscillatory zoning is due to considerable variations in the contents of semimetals (As and Sb) and formally divalent metals (Fe and Zn). Variations in As and Sb are coupled with changes in Fe and Zn, respectively. Both As and Fe contents increase in zoned crystals from the center to the edge: Sb/(Sb + As) ratio varies from 0.44 to 0.03, while Fe/(Fe + Zn) ratio varies from 0.38 to 0.75. The evolution of the composition of zoned tennantite-(Fe) crystals is similar to that of the fahlore at the deposit and to that in pseudomorphic rhythmically zoned tennantite aggregates. A negative relationship between Sb/(Sb + As) and Fe/(Fe + Zn) ratios has been revealed: it is stronger in the internal rhythms than in the external. The oscillatory zoning formed under conditions close to local equilibrium under the influence of external factors at the early crystal growth stages. The composition of zones reflects (random) fluctuations of the external parameters caused by variations in physicochemical conditions (T, fS2, fO2, and pH) and fluid composition, by fluid boiling or mixing of fluids from different sources. Subsequently, changes in the crystal morphology, irregular fluctuations in crystal compositions, and various trends in the behavior of components were caused by the appearance of a concentration gradient at the mineral–fluid boundary and kinetic phenomena on the mineral growth surface. The zoning developed under the influence of “internal” mechanisms under conditions far from equilibrium due to the interrelation between the growth of zones enriched in one component, resulting from the concentration gradient at the crystal–fluid boundary, and the incorporation of another component, in particular, as a result of the self-organization process uninfluenced by external factors. It has been concluded that the oscillatory zoning in fahlore is caused by the difference in solubility of the end-members of the tennantite–tetrahedrite solid solution due to changes in the metal and semimetal migration conditions with a decrease in temperature and fluid salinity. Hence, the oscillatory zoning in tennantite-(Fe) crystals at the Darasun deposit was related to self-organization processes complicated by random fluctuations (noise) of the external parameters.
The results of a study of mineral-hosted melt inclusions were used to reconstruct the evolution of tholeiitic melts that produced the rocks of the shield edifice of Wangtian’e volcano, Northeast China, including the P–T parameters of their crystallization. Primary melt inclusions were studied in plagioclase of tholeiitic basalts. They contain “dry” Fe-rich silicate glass or a crystallized fine-grained mineral aggregate, feldspar rim, and globules of various compositions: water-bearing Fe-rich globules, water-bearing Si-rich globules and “dry” Si-rich globules. In the groundmass of tholeiitic basalts, “dry” Si-rich and Fe-rich glasses, as well as hydrated Fe-rich glass with an H2O content of up to 10–15 wt.% were identified. The fractional crystallization path of Wangtian’e tholeiitic melts was calculated by the COMAGMAT-5.2.2 software using glass compositions of homogenized melt inclusions in plagioclase from the basalts. It was shown that the calculated temperatures of the beginning of plagioclase crystallization are in good agreement with temperatures obtained in thermometric experiments with melt inclusions in plagioclase, and correspond to 1180–1200°C. Based on our studies, several stages of the melt differentiation during the formation of Wangtian’e volcanic rocks were identified. The first stage includes the Fenner-type crystal fractionation of the melt due to the appearance of plagioclase on the liquidus at the beginning of magma crystallization. The separation of the ferrobasaltic melt into Si-rich and Fe-rich silicate immiscible liquids (“dry” and hydrated) corresponds to the second stage of differentiation. The occurrence of silicate liquid immiscibility follows from the presence of Fe-rich and Si-rich glasses in the intergranular space of the basalts and in the melt inclusions in plagioclase of these rocks.
В (Fe-Zn)-тетраэдрит-теннантите-IV проявлена отрицательная зависимость между соотношениями Sb/(Sb + As) и Fe/(Fe + Zn). В каждом участке на границе Zn-тетраэдрита-I и новообразованного теннантита-IV происходит разрыв смесимости между As и Sb и резкое падение Sb/(Sb + As) и увеличение Fe/(Fe + Zn).
The first results of the study (methods of mineragraphy, cathodoluminescence (CL), electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS)) of scheelite from quartz-molybdenite and quartz-carbonate-sulfide vein-veinlet (porphyry type) are considered, as well as the magnetite-sulfide massive, veinlets and disseminated (skarn type) mineralization of the skarn-porphyry Cu-Au-Fe deposit of Bystrinskoye (East Transbaikalia) one of the largest gold-copper porphyry ore-fields in Russia. It has been established that scheelite, being not the main mineral of the deposit ores, is found almost everywhere, which makes it possible to identify its key features reflecting the specific features of the genesis, both of different types of mineralization and the deposit as a whole. It is shown that scheelite from different types of ore mineralization has clearly determined individual characteristics, differing in prevalence, ensembles of associated minerals, color of CL and fluorescence in the UV-light, composition and concentrations of macro- and microelements, as well as the nature of REE-spectra. These distinctive features testify to a significant difference in the conditions for the formation of the studied ore types and reveal the dependence on the physicochemical and compositional parameters of the mineral-forming medium, which makes it possible to consider scheelite as a fundamentally important genetic indicator of the evolution of mineral formation patterns. Concentrations of Mo in scheelite, the type and form of REE-spectra, which are generally, determined both by the inheritance of the mineral-forming fluid chemistry and the peculiarities of isomorphic occurrence of REE in the structure of the mineral, and variations in the redox properties of the mineral-forming fluid, are of key importance.
The paper presents pioneering data on the composition, texture, and crystal structure of molybdenite from various types of molybdenum mineralization at the Bystrinsky Cu–Au–Fe porphyry–skarn deposit in the eastern Transbaikal region, Russia. The data were obtained using electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Molybdenite found at the deposit in skarn, sulfide-poor quartz veins, and quartz–feldspar alteration markedly differs in the concentrations of trace elements determined by their species in the mineral, as well as in its structural features. Molybdenite-2H from skarn associated with phyllosilicates occurs as ultrafine crystals with uniform shape and texture; no dislocations or inclusions were found but amorphous silica was. The molybdenite composition is highly contrasting in the content and distribution of both structure-related (Re, W, and Se) and other (Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Sb, Te, Ag, Pd, Au, Hg, Pb, and Bi) metals. In the sulfide-poor quartz veins, highly structurally heterogeneous (2H + 3R) molybdenite microcrystals with abundant defects (dislocations and volumetrically distributed inclusions) are associated with illite, goethite, and barite. Some single crystals are unique three-phase (2H + 3R polytypes + amorphous MoS2). The mineral has a low concentration of all trace elements, which are uniformly distributed. However, individual domains with uniquely high Pd, Te, Ni, Hg, and W concentrations caused by mineral inclusions are found in some grains. Molybdenite from quartz–feldspar alteration is characterized by low concentrations of all trace elements except for Re and Se, which enrich some domains of the grains. Our data indicate that the compositional and structural heterogeneity of molybdenite from the Bystrinsky deposit are its crucial features, which obviously correlate with the types of Mo mineralization.
