The variation of water body area and the number of overwintering waterfowl species in Napahai Nature Reserve were successively observed for three years.The observation indicated that the bigger water body area sustained,the more waterfowl species observed,and vice versa.There was a positive correlation between the water body size and the number of waterfowl species.It was proposed according to the observation that a proper human intervention to the winter habitat was required for the waterfowls in order to maintain a moderate water acreage.
Napahai Nature Reserve is a seasonal lake and important international wetland located in the northwest of Yunnan Province.Napahai Reserve is a Store Over of migratory birds and a wintering habitat for many wetland migrants.Three surveys for birds of prey were carried out at Napahai Nature Reserve from Winter 2006 to Spring 2007.Scan sampling and focal animal sampling methods were used to collect data.Totally 9 species recorded belong to 2 Families and 1 Order.Community amount and distribution of the prey birds are relative to the resource change.The most behaviors of white-tailed sea eagle(Haliaeetus albicilla)and Himalayan griffon(Gyps hinalayensis)were foraging,resting and locomotion during wintering season.These behaviors emerging were affected by the food abundant.It is important for birds of prey to protection by efficacious managing or utilizing wetland environment and birds resource.
Four observation spots within 3 periods of time were set up to observe the quantity and species of winter water bird in Napahai.As a result,it recorded 49 species of birds,subordinating to 11 families and 6 orders,in which there were 40 species of winter migrants.And the paper discusses the water bird's community composition,protected birds,population fluctuation and habitat changes.
Wintering behaviors of black-necked crane Grus nigricollis were conducted at Napahai Nature Reserve from October 2005 to March 2006.Scan sampling and focal animal sampling method were used to collect data.The study covered early,middle and late wintering period of the crane and 30 field observing days in total. 7 kinds of behaviors,including foraging,begging and being feed,standing,locomotion,maintenance,resting and social activity were recorded.During wintering season,the most behavior of black-necked crane was foraging,and it increased gradually in early,middle,late period of wintering.The foraging behavior of crane mainly occurred at marsh and exceeded 60%.The second habitat is meadow.The result showed marsh and meadow of the wetland were important habitats for the crane.Effective protecting the marsh and meadow of the Napahai Reserve is very important for black-necked cranes smoothly wintering.
