Representation of rurality plays a crucial role in developing rural tourism. However, the connotations of rural destinations and how such representations shift across different social contexts remains unclear. This study aims to examine the rurality of, and changes in, rural tourism destinations through the lens of social representation theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 residents and 17 tourists from rural destinations in Nanjing, China. We identified three core dimensions of rurality representation in these destinations: material, social, and cultural. From these, six primary categories emerge: the natural environment, settlement architecture, production and daily life, interpersonal relationships, folk customs and festivals, and spiritual orientation. The findings indicate that the representation of rurality in rural tourism destinations has evolved from an agriculture-centred to a tourism-centred focus. We confirm that rurality is socially constructed and varies according to social background. Rural tourism development should consider the nuanced connotations of rurality and adopt a dynamic perspective to foster high-quality growth in the sector.
As key drivers of economic development and ecological governance, cities play a pivotal role in regional development. However, rapid industrialization and urbanization have brought challenges such as ecological degradation and resource shortages. Enhancing urban ecological resilience is crucial to addressing these issues. One effective approach is constructing ecological resilience assessment models. This study develops an urban ecological resilience assessment model for the Yangtze River Economic Belt, focusing on "evolutionary resilience" and based on the "resistance-adaptability-recovery" dimensions. The model assesses urban ecological resilience from 2006 to 2020. Utilizing the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model, the study identifies the primary drivers of ecological resilience and examines their mechanisms. Key findings include: ① From 2006 to 2020, the average urban ecological resilience in the Yangtze River Economic Belt increased overall, with significant regional disparities, there was a notably better performance in downstream areas compared with that in the midstream and upstream regions. ② There was a general trend of progression from lower to higher levels of urban ecological resilience, with major cities, including municipalities and provincial capitals, showing strong core polarization effects in regional development. However, many areas still exhibited low or lower levels of resilience, indicating significant room for improvement. ③ The spatiotemporal evolution of urban ecological resilience in the Yangtze River Economic Belt was influenced by multiple factors, with notable contributions from technological investment, foreign trade openness, and economic level.
Drawing upon the distinctive identity attributes of working holiday makers, characterized by their dual identity as hosts and tourists, this study explores the relationship between host-guest interactions, social atmosphere, and subjective well-being by constructing a hypothetical model. The results reveal whether in the role of hosts or tourists, host-guest interactions significantly influence their subjective well-being, and social atmosphere mediates the relationship between host-guest interactions and subjective well-being. Furthermore, host-guest interactions' effects on subjective well-being vary depending on different identities. Additionally, both emotional and instrumental host-guest interactions manifest diverse effects on social atmosphere across varying identities.
In response to rapid urbanization, urban agglomerations have become pivotal spatial entities for fostering high-quality social and economic development, yet they face increasing ecological pressure. Balancing urban growth with ecological sustainability is a critical issue requiring immediate attention. This study utilizes the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, integrates MODIS imagery and NPP-VIIRS data to develop a Novel Remote Sensing Ecological Index (NRSEI). This index comprehensively characterizes key environmental factors, including greenness, heat, wetness, air quality, and human activity. The NRSEI is then used to assess the Ecological Environmental Quality (EEQ) of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) over the period from 2012 to 2021. Spatial correlation analysis is employed to investigate the dynamic evolution and spatial characteristics of EEQ in the region. Additionally, the Geodetector is applied to identify and evaluate the natural, social, and economic factors driving variations in EEQ across the urban agglomeration. Key findings reveal that: (1) Between 2012 and 2021, the YRDUA’s EEQ showed an upward trend, with the average NRSEI increasing from 0.509 to 0.556, representing an annual growth rate of 0.47%. However, notable regional disparities exist, with a spatial pattern characterized by “low EEQ in the northwest and high in the southeast.” (2) An analysis of NRSEI variations over this period indicates that the YRDUA’s EEQ has remained largely stable, although ecological degradation is concentrated in densely populated, low-lying areas near lakes, rivers, and plains. (3) Topographic complexity, economic development, and population density are the primary factors driving spatial differences in EEQ, with interactive effects among these factors exerting a more significant influence than individual factors alone.
Tourism economic resilience relates to the theme of high-quality tourism development. Based on the relevant data of the three major urban agglomerations in eastern China from 2009 to 2020, this study measures the economic resilience of tourism. It analyzes the impact factors of threshold variables. The findings are as follows: Tourism economic resilience in the three major urban agglomerations exhibits an “inverted V-shaped” trend, with significant disparities in resilience level among different cities. Tourism economic resilience in the three major urban agglomerations shows an imbalance in space. In the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Pearl River Delta urban agglomerations, large cities exhibit relatively high resilience. The value of eastern cities in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is higher than that of the west. Economic development level (EDL), informatization level (IL) and government intervention (GI) have significant threshold effects on tourism economic resilience. Under different threshold variables, the impact on tourism economic resilience is quite different. Urbanization levels and infrastructure improvements have a significant positive impact on tourism economic resilience. Relevant countermeasures and suggestions are proposed to improve tourism economic resilience.
Scene theory provides a new theoretical perspective for deepening research of cultural and tourism integration. This study used the scene theory as a theoretical analysis tool, summarizing the research value of cultural and tourism scenes, proposing the theoretical connotation and logic of cultural and tourism scenes, and identifying the research direction of cultural and tourism scenes. The research findings are as follows:1)The research value of cultural and tourism scenes is reflected in placing the cultural and tourism industries in the same dynamic and complete system, and the differentiated scenes formed are conducive to implementing heterogeneous cultural and tourism integrative development strategies.2)The theoretical connotation of cultural and tourism scenes includes four parts:First, concrete substance is an important foundation for the existence of cultural and tourism scenes.Second, the unique cultural value is contained in cultural and tourism scenes.Third, cultural values are the core components of cultural and tourism scenes.Last, the construction of cultural and tourism scenes becomes the driving force for culture and tourism integration.3)The theoretical logic of cultural and tourism scenes is formed by the interaction of three dimensions:local originality, symbolic perception, and value expression.4)Future research on cultural and tourism scenes should focus on the theoretical connotation and contemporary value of cultural and tourism scenes, the expression of cultural value in cultural and tourism scenes, the pattern recognition and operation mechanism of cultural and tourism scenes, and the application of digital technology in cultural and tourism scenes. The research can provide a theoretical basis and scenario application reference for promoting the development of culture and tourism integration.
Rural tourism destinations that exhibit rurality can effectively enhance their core competitiveness. This study explores the evolving characteristics of rurality in typical rural tourism destinations near Nanjing City. Employing methodologies such as interviews, questionnaire surveys, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, paired sample t-tests, potential conflict index, and cluster analysis, the study reveals that overall rurality perception has improved with tourism development. However, material and social aspects weakened, contrasting with a substantial improvement in the spiritual dimension. The potential conflict index analysis indicates conflicting post-development perceptions of rurality, with increased differences among individual items. Moreover, cluster analysis categorizes tourists into four groups: (1) rurality perception enhancers, (2) relatively neutral, (3) rational, and (4) rurality perception diminishers. These findings offer valuable insights for rural tourism management.
Due to limitations in mainstream symmetric methodologies, the linkages between cultural dimensions and tourism demand have yet to be fully understood. Drawing on Hofstede's theory of national culture and adopting the asymmetric and case-oriented fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method, this investigation explored configuration models of cultural distance between 65 countries in relation to China's inbound and outbound tourism flows. Using a series of three studies, this research assessed the impact of grouping Hofstede's six cultural distance dimensions and the effect of cultural distance as a whole on Chinese inbound and outbound tourism flows within the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic distance framework. Findings indicate that several paths respectively lead to high inbound and outbound tourism flows. Uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation are core conditions for high inbound and outbound tourism flows, respectively. Three testable propositions were additionally evaluated by comparing cultural distance configurations between high inbound and outbound tourism flows.

The construction of world-class tourism destinations is the important goal and realistic demand for tourism development in many places of China in the new era. Considering the current status, such as vague concepts, unclear requests, as well as inadequate studies, related to world-class tourism destinations, we conduct several works on it in this study through literature review and theoretical thinking. Specifically, based on the interpretation of fundamental concepts of tourism destination, we define world-class tourism destinations as those with worldwide popularities and influences, as well as international quality standards, and further propose the construction demands of world-class tourism destination with five-aspect systems, i.e., world-class resources and attractions system, high-quality facilities and services system, global brand and market system, high-effect industry and governance system, along with international environment and development system. The findings of this study would have both theoretical and practical significances in enhancing the construction level of tourism destinations, promoting high-quality development of tourism industries, as well as expanding international influences of Chinese culture and China tourism.

The “space of flows” theory, emphasizing the exchange of information and movement of matters at the time-space level, provides a new scientific perspective for deepening the study of interactive networks of tourism destinations. By linking tourism flow data with network scientific approaches, this study identifies several tourism communities, sheds light on their internal relations and then explores the driving factors. The results show that the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration includes 7 actual and 6 potential tourism communities. There are significant differences in the characteristics of tourism flow within and across these communities, indicating that an accurate prediction of regional tourism demand should pay attention to the spatiotemporal attributes of flow elements. Moreover, the roles of informatization and government behavior in forming destination networks should be highlighted among the driving factors of tourism communities. The implications of tourism community detection for integrated development of regional tourism are finally discussed.

This thematic analysis examines whether reviews on transactional and social media websites can reflect the air quality of a tourist destination. We used linguistic and sentiment analysis methods to establish an analytical framework for assessing the credibility of the reviews with sufficiency and consistency analyses. We collected Ctrip and Sina Weibo reviews to analyze the sentiment values using deep learning and Baidu sentiment dictionary methods. We found that although the sentiment value of the Ctrip transactional comments on air quality was high, they hardly reflected reality. Conversely, the Sino Weibo social media comments were highly credible, despite their low sentiment values. Tourists' perception of air quality is mainly affected by intangible air factors (such as pollutants), then tangible air factors, hydrology factors and terrain factors. The study uses online reviews to analyze air quality and provides a reference for the environmental management of destinations and decision making among tourists.
