This study aimed to examine the relationship between occupational stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms among employees and evaluate the potential moderating role of occupational health literacy in this relationship. The results suggested that occupational stress increased the risk of anxiety/depressive symptoms. The association of occupational stress with anxiety/depressive symptoms was mitigated with higher levels of occupational health literacy. This study is the first to demonstrate the protective moderating effect of occupational health literacy on the association between occupational stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms among employees, providing valuable reference for future research on the prevention of anxiety/depressive symptoms related to occupational stress.
As older people age and weaken physically, communities and neighborhoods become increasingly important in the lives of them. The pathways between these community factors and older adults' well-being were still unclear. This study explored the relationship and mechanisms between community public facilities, environment, and security and the subjective well-being of older residents. Data were obtained from the China Family Panel Study (CFPS). The study population consisted of 4606 older adults. This study used one-way analysis, linear regression, Shapley decomposition, and mediation analysis. The results indicated that community public facilities, environment, and security had significant positive associations with older adults' subjective well-being, with a high level of contribution; social connectedness and community sentiment played a chain mediating role in this. This pointed out the positive significance and the specific pathways of community conditions for the subjective well-being of older adults. It also provides reference for community managers and builders. Building a happy Chinese community or a happy Chinese cultural community requires consideration of the needs of the elderly regarding community factors, social interaction, and community integration.
Perimenopause, the transitional phase preceding menopause, is characterized by hormonal fluctuations causing physical, psychological, and sexual symptoms collectively known as perimenopausal syndrome. These symptoms can substantially impair quality of life (QoL), particularly in the context of an aging global population. This study aimed to evaluate the QoL among perimenopausal women and identify factors influencing it. This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Second Hospital of Shandong University from January 2022 to December 2023. A total of 387 perimenopausal women were selected by convenience sampling. Data were collected using MENQOL, PSQI, IPAQ-L, SAS, and SDS scales. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation, one-way ANOVA, rank-sum tests, and stepwise multivariate linear regression (P < 0.05). The mean MENQOL score was 51.59 ± 30.15, indicating moderate overall quality-of-life impairment. The mean PSQI score was 9.97 ± 5.89; 70.54
High level of willingness to receive self-paid vaccines is a prerequisite for the behavior of receiving self-paid vaccines. This study aimed to explore how family health can increase the willingness to receive self-paid vaccines among Chinese adults through the mediating role of self-efficacy and health literacy. Obtained from Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) 2021, the research data involved 9966 adults. Linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro were used for examining the chain mediating effect of self-efficacy and health literacy on the associations of family health with the willingness to receive self-paid vaccines. The results showed that only 56.72% participants belonging to high willingness to receive self-paid vaccines. After controlling the potential confounding factors, family health had a significant positive effect on people's willingness to receive self-paid vaccines (β = 0.182, p < 0.001). Self-efficacy and health literacy played independent and chain mediating roles in the process (indirect effect = 0.261, effect weight = 34.85%). The independent mediating effect of self-efficacy was 0.093 with a weight of 12.42%, the independent mediating effect of health literacy was 0.079 with a weight of 10.55%, and the effect of the chain mediation of them was 0.089 with a weight of 11.88%. The findings indicate that improving family health can increase the level of self-efficacy and health literacy, which can promote willingness to receive self-paid vaccines for people. That provides an invaluable reference for the design of health education and vaccine promotion program.
Presenteeism is a severe global public health issue, which is widespread in the community of teachers. Limited evidence shows presenteeism patterns and their associations with work engagement and turnover intention among primary and secondary school teachers in China. In this study, latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to categorize the presenteeism patterns of teachers, and multiple linear regression was performed to explore the associations of these patterns with the work engagement and turnover intention of teachers. Presenteeism existed in group heterogeneity and five patterns of presenteeism were classified. Different patterns of presenteeism were associated with work engagement and turnover intention to different degrees. Compared with the low presenteeism group, the high presenteeism one exhibited the lowest work engagement, followed by the medium presenteeism and working energy-consuming presenteeism groups, and finally the group with working restricted presenteeism. Meanwhile, the high presenteeism group had the highest risk for turnover intention, followed by working restricted presenteeism and medium presenteeism groups, while working energy-consuming presenteeism was not related to the turnover intention of teachers. School administrators should develop targeted interventions for various types of teachers’ presenteeism, to prevent presenteeism from negatively affecting teachers’ work engagement and turnover intention.
Social connectedness is closely related to subjective well-being. Previous research has focused on the impact of individuals and neglected the analysis of their complex relationship at the couple level. This study was aimed at analyzing the interrelationship between the social connectedness and subjective well-being of couples. The data was taken from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS 2020) and included variables such as socio-demographics, subjective well-being, social connectedness, marital satisfaction, subjective social status and mental health. Based on IBM SPSS 24.0 and Mplus 8.0, this study used Shapley decomposition and constructed the actor-partner-interdependence model to assess the associations between couples. This study included 12,164 married participants from China, including 6082 husbands (age: mean = 49.97, standard deviation = 13.69) and 6082 wives (age: mean = 48.23, standard deviation = 13.57). The results demonstrated that Chinese wives had significantly lower levels of subjective well-being than their husbands. Social connectedness contributed much more to the subjective well-being of both spouses than sociodemographic characteristics, marital satisfaction, mental health, subjective social status and other factors. The actor effect showed a positive effect of couples' social connectedness on subjective well-being (husbands: standardized coefficient = 0.388, p < 0.001; wives: standardized coefficient = 0.382, p < 0.001). The partner effect was different, as the social connectedness of wives exerted a significant positive effect on the subjective well-being of husbands (standardized coefficient = 0.030, p = 0.013), while the partner effect of husbands was not significant. Wives' social connectedness affected the subjective well-being of both spouses, whereas that of husbands did not. This study reveals differences in the relationship between the social connectedness and subjective well-being of Chinese couples based on socio-cultural contexts. More attention and support should be given to wives to enhance the well-being of couples.
This study examines the relationship between school climate, psychological distress, resilience and presenteeism, including 1046 teachers from three primary schools, five junior high schools and two senior high schools in Shandong Province of China. The PROCESS macro and multiple linear regression analysis revealed that school climate and resilience had a negative correlation with presenteeism. Interestingly, the relationship between school climate and presenteeism was mediated by psychological distress in part. Resilience played a role in moderating the direct effect of school climate on presenteeism. This study highlighted the need to improve school conditions, enhance mental health, and maximize teachers’ productivity in China.
This study evaluated the relationship between sarcopenia and the trajectories of depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults and verified the mediating role of social participation. The sample included 1832 participants aged ≥ 60 years from five waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The optimal trajectory class of depressive symptoms was identified using the latent growth mixture model (LGMM). The association between sarcopenia and the trajectories of depressive symptoms was assessed by multinomial logistic regression. The potential mediating effect of social participation was evaluated through mediation analysis. Subgroup and interaction analyses were also carried out. The results showed that the depressive symptom score trajectory of the sarcopenia group was higher than that of the normal group. The depressive symptoms of the general participants had three trajectories: “Anterior high level,” “Posterior high level,” and “Stable low level”. Sarcopenia was related to the increased odds of adverse trajectory of depressive symptoms (“Anterior high level” trajectory) (adjusted OR = 1.53, 95
Objective We aimed to explore the role of internet use between ADL disability and depressive symptoms onset and the effect of age on association mentioned above. Methods The participants who are 45 years old and above from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included in the 2018 baseline and 2020 follow-up research. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between ADL disability in 2018 and depressive symptoms in 2020. Interaction testing and stratified analyses were used to assess the role of internet use between them. Results There were 6784 subjects included in the study and 1503 (22.2 %) participants developed depressive symptoms in follow-up. ADL disability was associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms in all participants after adjusting for all covariates (OR: 1.530, 95 %CI: 1.301, 1.797). This association remained in participants not using the internet (OR: 1.532, 95 %CI: 1.294, 1.811), but this association was not found in participants using the internet (OR: 1.242, 95 %CI: 0.638, 2.290). In addition, the role of internet use varied by age groups. Internet use may attenuate the association between ADL disability and depressive symptoms in middle-aged adults and younger older adults, but not in older adults aged 70 years and above. Conclusions ADL disability positively associated with depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults and internet use may attenuate the association between them especially in middle-aged and younger older adults.
Presenteeism has become a significant issue related to health. However, the effect of fatigue and organizational identification on the relationship between emotional labor and presenteeism among Chinese nurses remains unclear. This study aims to explore the correlation of Chinese nurses’ emotional labor, fatigue and organizational identification with presenteeism, and to analyze the mediating effect of fatigue and the moderating effect of organizational identification on the relationship between emotional labor and presenteeism. A cross-sectional study was performed from June to October 2022 in Changchun City, Jilin Province, China. In total, 1,630 nurses were asked to complete a range of self-administered questionnaires, including the Emotional Labor Scale, the Fatigue Scale, the Organizational Identification Scale and the Stanford Presenteeism Scale. Besides, the PROCESS macro and multiple linear regression were used for moderated mediation analysis. Emotional labor (r = 0.108, P < 0.001) and fatigue (r = 0.475, P < 0.001) were positively correlated with presenteeism, while organizational identification (r = -0.261, P < 0.001) was negatively correlated with presenteeism. The effect of emotional labor on presenteeism was partially mediated by fatigue (Effect = 0.014, 95
Baduanjin was also called Eight Brocades (EB), a branch of Qigong exercise, is classified as a mild-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise. It has been theorized that regular practice of EB can alleviate anxiety and depression in patients undergoing chemotherapy; however, there are currently no comprehensive quantitative reviews on the efficacy of EB for this population. Therefore, this meta-analysis aims to investigate the effects of EB on chemotherapy-treated patients. Eight electronic databases were searched from their inception until February 15, 2024, to identify relevant studies. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to filter the retrieved studies. Outcomes were various quantitative assessments. This systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO Registry (registration number CRD42023466630). Nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met eligibility criteria (n = 704). The meta-analysis results demonstrated that EB significantly reduced levels of anxiety and depression. Subgroup analysis revealed that the intervention frequency of 1 time/day had a greater effect on the improvement of negative emotions, compared with 2 times/day and 5 times/week. The intervention duration of 4 weeks showed more efficacy in reducing depression scores than 12 weeks or 16 weeks; however, no statistical difference was observed for anxiety scores. EB exercise can reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in chemotherapy-treated patients. However, the results should be interpreted with caution as existing methodological limitations. The findings provided insights into the development of public health initiatives to improve the negative emotion among chemotherapy-treated patients by EB exercise.
Background: Livable environment and ways, as the necessary conditions for the elderly to enjoy their old age, have a significant impact on their mental health and happiness. It's crucial to understand how living arrangements affect depressive symptoms in China. Studies on how various leisure activities modify this association are yet limited. Methods: This study relies on panel data derived from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), collected during waves spanning 2008/2009, 2011/2012, 2014, and 2018. The primary objective is to examine the relationship between living arrangements, leisure activities, and depressive symptoms of elderly individuals. Linear mixed -effects models were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 26,342 observations aged 65 and over were included in this paper. Older adults living alone (beta = 0.66, 95 % CI: 0.55, 0.76) or living in institutions (beta = 0.69, 95 % CI: 0.40, 0.98) had more depressive symptoms than those living with family. Leisure activities were negatively associated with depressive symptoms (beta = -0.16, 95 % CI: -0.18, -0.15). Moreover, there was significant interactions between living arrangements and leisure activities. No matter which kind of living arrangements, participating in physical, productive or social activity was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms. Limitations: Study design might introduce bias, and it cannot establish causality between the tested variables. Conclusions: Older adults living alone or in institutions have more possibility to develop depressive symptoms than those living with family, and such a relationship among Chinese older adults can be moderated by participating in leisure activities.
This study aims to investigate the associations of caring for grandchildren and/or great-grandparents with depressive symptoms, as well as life satisfaction in Chinese grandparents, and analyze the moderating roles of urban-rural residence and social participation. A nationally representative sample of 2973 grandparents in families with great-grandparents and grandchildren were selected from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD-10) and the single-item were used to measure depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. Social participation included participation in social and intellectual activities. The binary logistic regression model was employed to explore the relationship between caring and depressive symptoms, as well as life satisfaction in the whole participants, different urban-rural residence, and social participation groups, respectively. Caring was associated with depressive symptoms and life satisfaction (p < 0.05). A significant interaction existed between caring and urban-rural residence for depressive symptoms (interaction p = 0.029) and life satisfaction (interaction p = 0.027). Significant interactions were also found among caring, urban-rural residence, and social activities with depressive symptoms (interaction p = 0.025). In urban, caring for both was negatively related to depressive symptoms for the non-social activists, while in rural, caring for great-grandparents was positively associated with depressive symptoms for social activists (p < 0.05). Any new policy design related to preventing and reducing the possibility of mental disorders in Chinese grandparents should be tailored to heterogeneous subgroups who live in different rural-urban and social activities participation.
Background: Despite a great deal of existing research on nurses’ job stress and intention to stay, it is still unclear how the association between Chinese nurses’ job stress and intention to stay is affected by presenteeism and family functioning. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the correlations of Chinese nurses’ job stress, presenteeism, and family functioning with their intention to stay and clarify the mediating effect of presenteeism and the moderating effect of family functioning on the association between their job stress and intention to stay. Method: A cross-sectional study of 1,008 nurses was performed in a major general hospital in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, China. The participants were invited to engage in a questionnaire survey regarding job stress, presenteeism, family functioning, and intention to stay. A moderated mediation analysis was conducted through multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro. Results: Job stress and presenteeism were negatively correlated with intention to stay, whereas family functioning was positively correlated with intention to stay. The effect of job stress on intention to stay was partially mediated by presenteeism (Effect = −0.147, 95% CI = [−0.305, −0.003]). In addition, family functioning moderated the direct effect of job stress on intention to stay (Index = −0.134, 95% CI = [−0.274, −0.001]). Conclusions: Presenteeism and family functioning were found to play mediating and moderating roles, respectively, in the relationship between job stress and intention to stay. Relevant interventions or family-friendly programs should be developed to enhance nurses’ intention to stay.
Background The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) in China face retention and recruit challenges, which impact the efficiency and performance of disease control and prevention. This study explores the career choice preferences of CDC workers by conducting a discrete choice experiment, which provides CDC management information and recommendations for optimizing employee retention and motivation policies. Methods A discrete choice experiment was conducted in nine provinces in China, where seven key job preference attributes were identified through a literature review and expert consultation to analyze the job choice preferences of CDC workers. A mixed logit model, latent class model, and a policy simulation tool were estimated. Results A total of 7071 respondents from 117 CDC were surveyed, with a valid sample of 5944 cases included for analysis after consistency testing. Our main findings were that all seven attributes, including income, welfare benefits, bianzhi, workload, acceptance and respect from the public, opportunities for career development, and job skill training, significantly influenced CDC workers' job choices. Heterogeneity analyses identified two main groups based on different levels of preference for the utility of attributes. Income-prioritisers were concerned with income, opportunities for career development, and welfare benefits, while bianzhi-prioritiserswere concerned with bianzhi, welfare benefits and income. The policy simulation analysis found that the income-prioritisers had relatively higher sensitivity to multiple job preference incentives. Conclusion Income and bianzhi were two key attributes that influence the job choice and retention preferences of CDC workers. We also identified heterogeneity in job choice preferences. We suggest providing different retention management programs and work incentive strategies based on the preference characteristics of different subgroups of CDCs workers, taking into account realistic feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
It has been demonstrated that a healthy lifestyle affects cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults, while the role of activities of daily living (ADL) has not been investigated. This study was based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from the first wave (2011) to the third wave (2015), aiming to examine the mediating role of ADL in this relationship. The sample included 13,227 middle-aged and older adults who participated in the three wave surveys. A battery of tests, including episodic memory and executive function, were used to evaluate cognitive function, and ten variables, including BMI, exercise and other variables were employed to construct healthy lifestyle indicators. A cross-lagged model was utilized to confirm the mediating effect of ADL between healthy lifestyle and cognitive function. The results revealed that T1 healthy lifestyle had a significant negative prediction for T2 ADL (β =-0.051, P < 0.001). T1 ADL significantly negatively predicted T2 health lifestyle (β = -0.052, P < 0.001). T1 cognitive function significantly negatively predicted T2 ADL (β =-0.032, P < 0.001). T2 ADL significantly negatively predicted T3 cognitive function (β = -0.103, P < 0.001). T2 cognitive function significantly negatively predicted T3 ADL (β = -0.003, P < 0.001). After adjustment for covariates, T2 ADL negatively mediated the association between T1 healthy lifestyle (β = -0.118, P < 0.001) and T3 cognitive function (β = -0.215, P < 0.001). The model explained 8.2
Background Since few studies have incorporated factors like stressors, coping styles, and academic burnout into the same model to analyze their impacts on depressive symptoms, this research attempts to establish an optimal structural model to explore the direct and indirect effects of these factors on depressive symptoms. Methods A total of 266 postgraduates completed questionnaires regarding coping styles, academic burnout, stressors, and depressive symptoms. The path analysis was applied for investigating the roles of coping styles and academic burnout in mediating the relationship between stressors and depressive symptoms. Results The total and direct effects of stressors on depressive symptoms were 0.53 and 0.31, respectively. The proportion of the direct effect of stressors on depressive symptoms to its total effect amounted to 58.50%. The indirect effects of academic burnout, positive coping style, and negative coping style on the association between stressors and depressive symptoms were 0.11, 0.04, and 0.03, taking up 20.75%, 7.55%, and 5.66% of the total effect, respectively. The serial indirect effect of positive coping style and academic burnout was 0.02, accounting for 3.77% of the total effect, while that of negative coping style and academic burnout was 0.02, taking up 3.77% of the total effect. Conclusions Coping styles and academic burnout chain jointly mediate the relationship between stressors and depressive symptoms among postgraduates. Thus, encouraging postgraduates to tackle stress positively may reduce the likelihood of the development of academic burnout and further reduce depressive symptoms.
