A two-arm spectrometer FLUKTON for investigations in the field of relativistic nuclear physics at U70 energies is proposed to be constructed on base of the existing detector SPIN (IHEP, Protvino). The main objective is to obtain new data on clusters of cold superdense nuclear matter. Interaction of a high intensity proton beam with nuclear targets and an ion beam with liquid hydrogen and nuclear targets will be studied.
The centrality dependence of the mean charged-particle multiplicity as a function of pseudorapidity is measured in approximately 1 mu b(-1) of proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Charged particles with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.7 are reconstructed using the ATLAS pixel detector. The p + Pb collision centrality is characterised by the total transverse energy measured in the Pb-going direction of the forward calorimeter. The charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions are found to vary strongly with centrality, with an increasing asymmetry between the proton-going and Pb-going directions as the collisions become more central. Three different estimations of the number of nucleons participating in the p + Pb collision have been carried out using the Glauber model as well as two Glauber-Gribov inspired extensions to the Glauber model. Charged-particle multiplicities per participant pair are found to vary differently for these three models, highlighting the importance of including colour fluctuations in nucleon-nucleon collisions in the modelling of the initial state of p + Pb collisions.
Formation of the d and t cumulative light nuclear fragments emitted from the nucleus with large transverse momenta at an angle of 35° in the laboratory frame is investigated. The data on collisions of 50-GeV protons with the C, Al, Cu, and W nuclei are collected using the extracted proton beam of the IHEP accelerator and the SPIN detector. The results indicate that the dominant contribution to formation of nuclear fragments comes from the local process of direct knockout from the nucleus.
HERMES has taken a wealth of deep-inelastic scattering data using the 27.6 GeV polarized lepton beam at HERA and various pure gas targets, both unpolarized and polarized, which opened the door to several unique results. Among them are the first evidences for the naive-T-odd Sivers and Collins effects. An overview of recent HERMES results on measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions, charged kaons and (anti)protons is presented.
The first data on the production of cumulative π+, p, and light nuclear fragments d and t emitted from a nucleus with a high transverse momentum at an angle of 35° in the laboratory system have been reported. The data have been obtained at the SPIN setup at the interaction of a 50-GeV proton beam extracted from the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino) with C, Al, Cu, and W nuclei.
This paper presents cross sections for the production of a W boson in association with jets, measured in proton–proton collisions at √ s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the large hadron collider. With an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1 TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. The measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-toleading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.
A measurement of the virtual-photon asymmetry A 2 and of the spin-structure function g 2 of the proton are presented for the kinematic range of the HERMES experiment carried out at the HERA electron storage ring at DESY. Semi-inclusive longitudinal double-spin asymmetries provide new insight into the valence quark helicity distributions Δu v and Δd v.
The transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons was measured in inclusive quasireal photoproduction for various target nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon. The data were obtained by the HERMES experiment at HERA using the 27.6 GeV lepton beam and nuclear gas targets internal to the lepton storage ring. The polarization observed is positive for light target nuclei and is compatible with zero for krypton and xenon.
