This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the situation of migrant children in the educational system of Saint Petersburg. The authors review the evolution of research on child migration, beginning in the 1970s when this topic first drew the attention of European researchers, and trace its growing relevance in the Russian context from the 2010s to the present. Particular attention is paid to schools with a high proportion of immigrant students. The study offers a detailed examination of the factors contributing to the emergence of such schools, including migration flows, urban infrastructure characteristics, and institutional mechanisms of student distribution.
The paper reflects on the book by Kai-Fu Lee, a Chinese scholar and entrepreneur, on the current state and future progress of artificial intelligence (AI). The reviewers underline two arguments of the monograph. The first argument is that in the contemporary world, the USA and China are turning into two "AI superpowers," and other countries have shirking opportunities to catch up with them. The second argument is that the development of AI technologies brings enormous economic opportunities, significant social problems, and existential crises. Reviewers view Lee's work as a comparative historical analysis in the Weberian tradition, of interest to social scientists due to its causal model of AI development, typology of AI waves, classification of professions based on AI dynamics, critique of contemporary capitalism, and examination of AI's impact on humanity. However, the research has shortcomings and limitations, as discussed in the paper's finale. In conclusion, the monograph offers compelling ideas and hypotheses about AI development that merit further investigation through empirical research.
The paper presents the results of a study that is part of a broader project aimed at analyzing online activities of migrants to Russia from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This research lies at the intersection of migration studies and nationalism studies. The authors seek to characterize the images of the nation and related discussions in online communities on migration topics. The focus of empirical analysis is five VKontakte groups discussing various news and stories about the country of origin, including news on migration to Russia. The methods are online observation supplemented by discourse analysis of posts and comments. The authors aim to answer the following questions: How do the participants construct the images of the nation? What is debatable and what is in consensus? How are the images of the nation and Islam related? How is migration to Russia characterized? Basing on empirical analysis, the authors characterize three images of the nation: “modernizing state” (Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan), “Muslim nation, but not Islamic state” (Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), “nation united by common enemies” (Azerbaijan). For the first one, the main sources of tension are class divisions and vectors of nation’s development. For the second one, Islam is considered as an important part of the national culture, and there are discussions, which type of identity, national or religious, is more significant. The third image is characterized by internal divisions which lose their importance in the face of the external enemy. In conclusion the authors discuss implications of research results for understanding migration processes in the post-Soviet space, including radicalization of migrants.
This article analyzes the legacy of one of the ‘classics’ of 20th century migration studies — George Zipf. Particular attention is paid to his work “Human behavior and the principle of last effort. An introduction to human ecology”. The authors focus not so much on the results of Zipf’s research, but on the questions he posed, and make the claim that these questions constitute the true value of Zipf’s scientific heritage. His inquiry on the criteria for describing migration process efficiency has become one of the key questions when it comes to theories of migration behavior, social adaptation and integration of migrants. The question about the influence of collective and group subjectivity on migration decision-making had a significant impact on the push and pull theory as formulated by E. Lee, while Zipf’s reflections on how migration behavior is influenced by the division of labor and the diversity of professional skills became the foundation for D. Massey's synthetic theory of migration. Step by step the article’s authors analyze Zipf's reflections in relation to such questions as: are migrants a social group? How can migration efficiency be measured? Is there a relationship between the movement of people and the movement of capital? How do the division of labor and the law of supply and demand affect migration? In conclusion, the authors formulate those theses brought forth by G. Zipf that are still relevant to this day.
Current publications in professional literature often discuss terrorism and extremism in the system of coordinates developed by jurisprudence where the different phenomena are eclectically combined and grouped for analytical purposes. Charles Tilly in his works insisted that the terms terror, terrorism, and terrorist do not identify causally coherent and distinct social phenomena but rather strategies that recur across a wide variety of actors and political situations. This paper tries to depict basic theoretical models and methodological framework for doing field sociological inquiry on the hottest issue in current migration studies which is how the reality of social exclusion in everyday life turns immigrants to the practices of ideological extremism.
The book is the first monograph on the sociology of social intercourse in Russian. The authors indicate that despite the fact that today many specific studies describe certain aspects of social intercourse, this phenomenon has no problematization within the overall logic of sociological knowledge. The authors propose a three-part structure: social intercourse as a phenomenon, as a concept, and as a problem. The monograph provides a rationale for the possibility of sociology of social intercourse, as well as the very necessity to separate the notions of “social intercourse” and “social communications” in social scientific research. The author examines social prerequisites of labor migrant involvement in the activities of organizations adhering to radical beliefs. The paper is based on a study carried out by a team of researchers form St Petersburg State University of Economics and St Petersburg University in two countries being the key donors of labor force for Russia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The author identifies the social prerequisites for ideological radicalization of transnational migrants (i.e. favorable conditions to become an ideological radical) and analyzes public opinion concerning the radical groups in these countries. As an example the author uses the collected materials exploring the background of two conversions to radical groups. Taking into account the countries’ specifics, the paper considers the Salafi movement (banned in both countries) as a radical group. Thus, the author illustrates examples of conversion to Salafism from the more popular Hanafi Madhhab School of Sunni Islam, describes the social conditions of the conversion and the attitudes of the local residents towards this movement.
The paper is oriented toward re-thinking classical categories in migration studies developed in Russian scholarly literature. The author provides definitions adjusted for the needs of empirical sociological research. The theoretical reasoning and empirical findings presented in the paper are based on researches organized and conducted by the International Research Laboratory «Transnationalism and migration processes: comparative and institutional analysis» in 2009—2015. The author proposes his reading of the terms: «migration process» (in its theoretical and empirical interpretations), «emigrant», «immigrant», and «immigrant status». In opposition to the approach commonly practiced in Russian academic literature the paper introduces the division of the migration process into two (not three) stages: the first stage includes actions aimed at receiving the migrant status; the second stage represents actions carried out to lose the migrant status. The article contains the author’s classi- fication of immigrants according to their status: labor, education, culture, service, family or forced immigrants. The author also proposes criteria for the operation- alization of different types of immigrants according to their formal characteristics and informal practices.
The article attempts to revise the concept of 'cosmopolitan sociability', proposed by Nina Glick-Schiller for the field of migration research, from the interactional perspective. Cosmopolitan sociability characterizes such forms of integration of mobile people that do not refer to ethnicity or the country of origin; instead they are based on openness, free emotional sharing, and general human competencies available to everyone. However, the use of the concept by anthropologists and sociologists seems to neglect specific situational mechanisms of how cosmopolitan sociability is produced and reproduced in everyday interactions. We seek to fill this gap addressing theoretical resources of ethnomethodological membership categorization analysis, as well as interaction ritual theory. We propose to combine these approaches as complementary conceptual frameworks to analyze cosmopolitan sociability practices at the situational level. Ethnomethodological tradition helps to identify mutual definition and accounting of what is happening in specific here-and-now situations. This allows analyzing the stability created within the framework of cosmopolitan interactions, as well as the specific moral order that is reproduced within them. Moreover, ethnomethodological analysis helps to identify contexts where cosmopolitan sociability can or cannot arise. Interaction ritual theory, as developed by Randall Collins, characterizes situational solidarities and group symbols emerging and sustaining in everyday interactions. It is also able to trace the influence of the individuals' past experiences (previous chains of interactions) on their participation in situations of cosmopolitan sociability. The proposed approach is illustrated by the analysis of several examples of labor migrants' interactions in the Federal Migration Service.
The paper argues that a materialistic understanding of history as Marx’s sociological research program has effectively been implemented in the comparative analysis of bourgeois societies. Both qualitative/case-oriented and quantitative/variable-oriented strategies of comparison were employed by Marx in his scholarship. The authors see the crucial dimension of the classical status of Marx in his engagement with historical comparisons – an analytical tendency he shares with Weber and, to some extent, Durkheim. A short historical exposition tracing the early reception of Marx in sociology continues with the most important contemporary criticisms of Marx’s comparative-historical analysis, focusing on the issues of Asiatic mode of production, the nature of European feudalism and the problem of capitalist rationality.
