WeChat is the largest acquaintance social networking platform in China, which has about 938 million monthly active user accounts. WeChat Moments, known as Friends Circle, serves social networking functions in which users can view information shared by friends. This paper addresses the problem of analyzing the patterns of cascading behavior in WeChat Moments. We obtain 229021 information cascades from WeChat Moments, in which more than 5 million users are involved during 45 days. We analyze these cascades from four aspects to understand the patterns of cascading behavior in WeChat Moments, including the patterns of diffusion structure, temporal dynamic, spatial dynamic and user behavior. In addition, the correlations between these patterns are examined. Our findings contribute to promoting products, predicting and even regulating public opinion.
Purpose WeChat is the largest acquaintance social networking platform in China, in which users can view and reshare web pages shared by friends. This paper aims to analyze the spatio-temporal dynamics of web pages diffused in WeChat and advice on commercials. Design/methodology/approach A large number of web pages diffused in WeChat are collected and exclusively divided into four categories according to their titles, including advertisements, news bulletins, holiday greetings and emotional essays. For each web page, an information cascade (tree structure) is constructed to describe the diffusion trace. Based on the categories, the spatio-temporal popularity is characterized; the topological, temporal and spatial properties are examined; and the spatio-temporal diffusion velocity is explored. Findings Through comparative analysis, different categories of pages show diversity. For spatio-temporal popularity, there is no significant difference in cascade size; holiday greetings usually last for a relatively short time on average; emotional essays are more likely to spread to more provinces. For topological, temporal and spatial characteristics, the diffusion process of advertisements is more likely to be broadcasting than other categories; news bulletins and holiday greetings have an obvious bursty; the number of viewing behavior decreases from east to west in general. For spatio-temporal diffusion velocity, emotional essays diffuse the fastest in topological and spatio-temporal dimensions. Originality/value These findings contribute to promoting products and providing support for data driven modeling of information diffusion and human activity in spatio-temporal dimensions.
Modern social media has greatly facilitated the ability and efficiency of people to access and consume information, as well as intentionally or unintentionally spread political rumors and nationalist sentiments. This paper addresses the problem of modeling of political web pages spreading in WeChat networks. At first, a large number of web pages diffused in WeChat are collected, in which more than two hundred million users are involved. The widely disseminated pages are extracted and divided into two categories: political and non-political pages. Then the topological and temporal features of these web pages are analyzed and compared with respect to cascade size, life span, width, height, average depth, and average path length. The properties of involved user's behaviors are examined in terms of viewing delay, sharing delay, and sharing probability. At last, the Unknown-View-Share-Removed (UVSR) model is employed to characterize the dynamic diffusion process of political web pages. The model is driven and validated by the empirical observations of political web pages diffused in WeChat networks. Our findings contribute to predicting and even regulating political rumors and nationalist sentiments.
WeChat is a mobile social media software launched by Tencent in 2011 that has 600 million monthly active users in August 2015. It is used in over 200 countries and regions with more than 20 different language versions. WeChat Moments (WM), viewed as a kind of realization of its social networking, provides users a way to post, view and share links of web pages in HTML5. The rumor spreading on WM, apart from the traditional traits of rumor spreading, gets its new spatiotemporal features. For better management and control of rumor spreading on WM, study for more knowledge about its properties is required. In this paper, 10 WM pages are used to analyze the properties, which contains approximately 6.5 million page views records. With the analysis of overall diffusion temporal characteristics, we propose a rumor spreading lifecycle with three different phases, i.e., the development phase, the explosion phase and the decline phase. By analyzing the diffusion region in different time, it is found that the rumor spreading regions in different time experience little change from the very beginning, and the cities in most frequently observed provinces like Guangdong are extracted for further analysis. It is concluded that the rumor spreading region has a positive correlation with its population and GDP. Moreover, the spatial and temporal characteristics of different spreading levels are studied, which leads to the conclusion that for most users only two steps are required to get access to the rumor that interests them on WM.
