Travel writing that transcends cultural boundaries often engages with the depiction of regional culinary cultures, thereby offering a unique lens through which to examine the representation of Other's foodways and the traveller's transformation. Drawing upon the metaphorical concept of translation as a form of crossing, this paper employs a tripartite analytical framework - interlingual translation, cultural translation, and self translation - to scrutinise Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper, a gastrotourism text set in China by Fuchsia Dunlop. Taking food as a semiotic system, this study aims to explore how Dunlop's cultural identity is captured in her self translation and how the identity is reflected in her interlingual and cultural translation of Chinese food. It reveals that Dunlop transforms from an outsider to an insider of Chinese food, and repositions herself as a different insider who values traditional Chinese foodways. This evolving identity is mirrored in her use of the host language (Chinese) for translating culinary expressions, and in her strategies of de-stigmatising and historicising Chinese culinary practices within cultural translation. Dunlop's narrative underscores a positive attitude towards translation, highlighting its gains for both the source culture and the cultural translator.
Robert Henricks’ Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching: A Translation of the Startling New Documents Found at Guodian marks a milestone in Daoist studies and translation history as the first complete English translation of the Guodian Laozi. However, systematic research on Henricks’ version remains limited, particularly regarding its philological foundation and translation strategies. Drawing on the concept of representation, this paper addresses the gap through a descriptive case study of Henricks’ work. By examining Henricks’ philological readings of dating, authorship, chapter divisions, textual variants, and philosophical thoughts, the study shows how he reconstructs and represents Daoist knowledge embedded in the Guodian Laozi. The findings suggest that Henricks, as both a translator and researcher, integrates rigorous philological studies with extensive paratexts, producing a version that both faithfully represents the text and offers new insights into its formation and philosophy. His translation has demonstrated the necessity of philological approaches for rendering Daoist and other ancient Chinese classics.
Travel writing narrates travellers' psychological development through mediation in the complex interplay between otherness and identity. Based on the notion that translation embraces personal experience and active transformation of the self through text, this paper manifests travel writing as a translation of the self of the traveller/writer. It aims to investigate intercultural mediation in the traveller's translation of the self via a case study, Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China, a travel writing classic by Fuchsia Dunlop. We first explore Dunlop's intercultural mediation by drawing on the concept of acculturation, focusing on her stresses and strategy in acculturation and intercultural adaptation throughout her translation of the self. We then review her ethic of difference in intercultural mediation. Dunlop adopts the integration strategy through intercultural contact. Her attitude towards Chinese culinary culture changes from an unconscious core belief in ethnocentrism to an acknowledgement of ethnorelativity, finally achieving an intercultural adaptation. Dunlop's memoir provides an opportunity to look at a broadening concept of translation, which is to examine the translation of the self in an intercultural context, particularly changes in translators' attitudes towards cultural difference: ignore it or open up to it.

ABSTRACT This paper presents an overview of translation criticism (TC) based on a bibliometric analysis of data in the online Bibliography in Interpreting and Translation (BITRA). The analysis focuses on, among other issues, the evolution of research output, publication types, authors and themes. Results suggest that TC research experienced an overall trend of growth from the 1940s to the 2010s, mainly in the form of journal articles and book chapters. It has attracted greater attention from young scholars during the past two decades. Meanwhile, publications, spearheaded by researchers with continuing interests in this field and some very active and productive journals, have a wide distribution of publication outlets and authors. Additionally, this research identifies some popular topics, such as quality assessment models and methods, reviews, evaluations, text-based linguistic analysis, poetry and novels. Also, it reveals that in the database, case studies are widely applied, and scholars' attention has gradually shifted from linguistic to extra-linguistic factors. Overall, the field is still relatively underresearched in the translation studies (TS) community with some potentially underexplored areas. Thus implications for future research, such as strengthening collaboration, intensifying research in online reviewing/criticism, enhancing corpus-based research, and research from cultural and sociological perspectives, are proposed.
