BackgroundDisaster coverage informs the public yet may expose victims at moments of extreme vulnerability. This study examined how televised rescue-moment broadcasting after the 6 February 2023 Turkey earthquake intersected with bioethical principles relevant to public health.MethodsUsing reflexive thematic analysis, we analyzed 60 rescue-moment videos from two national broadcasters (public and private). Focusing strictly on presented content, we coded ethically salient visuals and discourses (identity disclosure, medical interventions, and emotional framing) and developed themes through iterative reflection among researchers.ResultsTwo overarching categories characterized coverage: (1) normalized discursive presentation—open identity disclosure, emotional dramatization, and routinized live “rescue shows”; and (2) privacy-insensitive visual content—unblurred faces, filming of medical interventions, and overt displays of trauma amid crowd convergence.ConclusionsThese practices often conflicted with privacy, dignity, and non-maleficence, underscoring the need for trauma-informed disaster communication.LimitationsWe analyzed content only, not journalists intentions or newsroom processes.ImplicationsFindings inform ethical guidelines for disaster reporting and training programs integrating bioethics and journalism ethics.
This paper examines the challenges of qualitative research in medical contexts through our position as qualitative researchers, bioethicists, and ethics committee members in Turkey. We explore how biomedical paradigm dominance shapes qualitative research evaluation in medical settings, arguing that qualitative understanding is essential to medical knowledge production, not merely a methodological choice. Through experiential insights, we identify critical issues: insufficient methodological awareness among researchers, limited recognition of qualitative paradigms by ethics committees, and persistent epistemic injustice in evaluation processes, even within traditionally receptive fields. These challenges arise from deeper philosophical tensions rather than procedural difficulties. We propose reflexivity as both a methodological requirement and and ethical virtue to address qualitative research marginalization in medicine. Our analysis contributes to discussions about the relationship between ethics and science in qualitative research while offering practical insights for improving evaluation and support of qualitative methodologies in medical contexts.
Objective: To analyze the historical congress experiences of Prof. Dr. Feridun Nafiz Uzluk as a medical student in 1923 and derive lessons for contemporary medical education. Methods: Descriptive qualitative analysis of Uzluk’s three articles about the Fifth Congress of the Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (Tababet-i Akliye ve Asabiye Cemiyeti) in 1923 published in “Babalık” newspaper. The articles were systematically analyzed using inductive categorization to examine his observations, scientific content approach, and public communication strategies. Results: Uzluk’s writings demonstrated active engagement beyond passive observation, functioning as a science communicator and public educator. His articles revealed emphasis on psychiatry’s humanistic dimensions, patient advocacy, mental hygiene concepts, and educational reform needs. He critically examined the tension between theoretical and practical medical training while advocating for individualized education approaches. Conclusion: This historical analysis reveals the transformative potential of early student engagement with scientific communities. Uzluk’s 1923 congress participation, and his founding in 1946 of the Institute of History of Medicine (Tıp Tarihi Enstitüsü) at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, the forerunner of today’s Department of History of Medicine and Ethics, demonstrate the long-term impacts of such experiences, supporting current medical schools’ student research programs and congress participation initiatives.
Decision-making capacity in pediatric health care is crucial for upholding ethical practices and protecting patient autonomy . It involves a patient's ability to understand the benefits, risks, and alternatives of a proposed treatment or intervention, demonstrate understanding, appreciate the consequences, reason clearly, and communicate their wishes. Informed consent and assent are essential concepts in pediatric decision-making, ensuring that patients, including children, clearly understand their treatment options, and voluntarily agree to them. The involvement of children in medical decisions should be proportional to their developmental stage, with adolescents having more autonomy in health care decisions.

Amaç: Bu araştırmada Müʾmin b. Muḳbil’in Ẕaḫīre-i Murādiyye adlı eserinde yer alan malihulya (melankoli) ve delilik çeşitlerine ilişkin bölümlerin incelenmesi ve tıp tarihi açısından değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırma kapsamında Ẕaḫīre-i Murādiyye’nin İstanbul, Süleymaniye Yazma Eser Kütüphanesi, Antalya Tekelioğlu Koleksiyonu, No. 682’de bulunan nüshası incelenmiştir. Eserde yer alan māliḫūlyā ve farklı delilik çeşitlerine ilişkin bölümler incelenmiş ve literatür eşliğinde değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Müʾmin b. Muḳbil’in māliḫūlyā konusuna geniş sayılabilecek bir yer ayırdığı görülmektedir.
Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) plays a central role in modern obstetric care but faces ethical, legal and practical challenges. EFM was initially developed to reduce neonatal complications and improve maternal outcomes, and introduced into practice without a single clinical trial. It is now ubiquitous and accepted globally as the standard of care, raising concerns about over-medicalisation, high false-positive rates and the risk of unnecessary interventions which are harmful to both mother and baby. In this context, informed consent plays an important role in ensuring that patients understand EFM's benefits, potential risks and limitations. This review considers the historical development, ethical implications and current issues related to EFM, focusing on informed consent and malpractice risks. By promoting evidence-based practice, improving clinician education and advancing patient-centred care, the health professions can address these challenges and ensure that EFM is not used in support of a woman's care, unless the physician can articulate a benefit and obtain informed consent. EFM must be guided by autonomy, beneficence and justice principles to optimise maternal and fetal outcomes.

The Consortium aims to provide recommendations addressing the challenges of genetic testing, especially PGT for monogenic diseases (PGT-M) due to the high rate of consanguineous
Synthetic biology is designing and creating biological tools and systems for useful purposes. It uses knowledge from biology, such as biotechnology, molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and other disciplines, such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. It is recognized as both a branch of science and technology. The scope of synthetic biology ranges from modifying existing organisms to gain new properties to creating a living organism from non-living components. Synthetic biology has many applications in important fields such as energy, chemistry, medicine, environment, agriculture, national security, and nanotechnology. The development of synthetic biology also raises ethical and social debates. This article aims to identify the place of ethics in synthetic biology. In this context, the theoretical ethical debates on synthetic biology from the 2000s to 2020, when the development of synthetic biology was relatively faster, were analyzed using the systematic review method. Based on the results of the analysis, the main ethical problems related to the field, problems that are likely to arise, and suggestions for solutions to these problems are included. The data collection phase of the study included a literature review conducted according to protocols, including planning, screening, selection and evaluation. The analysis and synthesis process was carried out in the next stage, and the main themes related to synthetic biology and ethics were identified. Searches were conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, PhilPapers and MEDLINE databases. Theoretical research articles and reviews published in peer-reviewed journals until the end of 2020 were included in the study. The language of publications was English. According to preliminary data, 1,453 publications were retrieved from the four databases. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 58 publications were analyzed in the study. Ethical debates on synthetic biology have been conducted on various issues. In this context, the ethical debates in this article were examined under five themes: the moral status of synthetic biology products, synthetic biology and the meaning of life, synthetic biology and metaphors, synthetic biology and knowledge, and expectations, concerns, and problem solving: risk versus caution.
The scope of medical training has expanded to encompass clinical skills and the ability to conduct and interpret scientific research. Therefore, medical students must develop an awareness of research and publication ethics to advance in their careers. This study aimed to understand medical students’ perceptions of their first encounter with a research ethics committee. Qualitative methods were used to conduct three focus group interviews with students, and the data were thematically analysed. Findings revealed that the students had limited knowledge prior to their encounters, initially found the experience instructive yet challenging and negative, and later recognised its value. Students suggested enhancements to the practical and functional aspects of ethics committees and emphasised the need for ethics counselling in research.
OBJECTIVES:Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyã al-Rãzî is a historical physician who made theoretical and practical contributions to medicine. The aim of al-Rãzî's book, Man lã yaḥḍuruhu al-ṭabîb, is to provide a valuable benefit to the general public. The book was written for people who do not have access to physicians, critical medical manuscripts, and medications. Our study aimed to add to the literature and discuss the issues concerning urinary tract problems in al-Rãzî's Man lã yaḥḍuruhu al-ṭabîb.MATERIALS AND METHODS:The sections of al-Rãzî's Man lã yaḥḍuruhu al-ṭabîb dealing with the urinary system were discussed and translated from Arabic to English.RESULTS:Urinary system problems are discussed in al-Rãzî's book under the headings of "Pains in the kidneys and bladder (nephritis and cystitis) and stones in the kidneys," "Hematuria," "Pyuria and painful micturition/dysuria," "Prescription for medicine on this subject," and "Drug for the difficulty of passing urine/strangury." The relevant sections mention drugs and approach to be used, particularly in the face of problems, rather than theoretical explanations. Changes in practice and treatment have been suggested in various symptomatic situations.CONCLUSIONS:Rather than theoretical and etiological explanations for urinary problems, al-Rãzî provides accessible and applicable practical drugs and approaches for the general public, which can be considered suitable for the purpose mentioned in al-Rãzî's introduction to the book.
In Turkey, the numbers of studies that deal with agriculture and food as a system and process, and that address the issue with an integrated approach are very limited. Besides, there is no empirical study available in the national literature in which agricultural and food system has been analyzed within the framework of applied ethics. The present study aims to investigate the characteristics of food and agricultural engineers and veterinary physicians in terms of their tendency to carry out ethical evaluations when faced with issues falling under the field of agriculture and food ethics, and detect their capacity to identify ethical problems.A cross-sectional survey was employed in this study. Descriptive statistics like percentages and frequencies based on the scores from the scale were used. Data were collected via survey method from three occupational groups, namely, food and agricultural engineers and veterinary physicians working in 12 regions of Turkey, and analyzed using chi-square and score test. A total of 865 professionals from 55 different cities participated in the study. Data concerning participants’ level of ethics awareness regarding the identification and evaluation of ethical problems in the fields of food and agriculture were obtained. While the participating professionals could easily detect the problems in food and agriculture system that carried no ethical dilemma, they had difficulty in identifying issues that involved ethical dilemmas. It was also revealed that there was a significant difference between professionals in terms of their perception of ethical problems, demonstrating the need for a comprehensive ethics education to be imparted during and after under-graduate.
Kalıtım tarihi içerisinde Gregor Johann Mendel'in 19. yüzyılın ortalarında Pisum bitkilerini kullanarak yaptığı çaprazlama deneyleri oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir. On yedinci yüzyıldan itibaren bitki çaprazlama çalışmalarında bir artış yaşandığı görülmektedir.
Cancer, due to its high mortality and morbidity rate, is one of the leading concerns in medicine. As the approaches and treatment methods develop day by day, many ethical issues arise. The aim of this study was to find out basic ethical issues in medical oncology practice from a physician's perspective. Three interviews were performed with medical oncology specialists using a standard question form and their answers were analyzed with the support of up-to-date literature data and cultural aspects. Prominent subjects were communication issues between physicians and patients, fatalistic believes, burnout syndrome among oncologists, issues with informing patients and relatives about the diagnose and treatment, treatment refusal, complementary and alternative treatment methods and approach to terminal stage patients and euthanasia debates. The conclusion was that ethics training will help oncologists dealing with ethical issues. A good physician - patient communication seems to be the most important factor for the solutions.
