This paper describes the architecture and implementation of the original gaming-oriented synergistic processor element (SPE) in both 90-nm and 65-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology and introduces a new SPE implementation targeted for the high-performance computing community. The Cell Broadband Engine™ processor contains eight SPEs. The dual-issue, four-way single-instruction multiple-data processor is designed to achieve high performance per area and power and is optimized to process streaming data, simulate physical phenomena, and render objects digitally. Most aspects of data movement and instruction flow are controlled by software to improve the performance of the memory system and the core performance density. The SPE was designed as an 11-FO4 (fan-out-of-4-inverter-delay) processor using 20.9 million transistors within 14.8 mm 2 using the IBM 90-nm SOI low-k process. CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) static gates implement the majority of the logic. Dynamic circuits are used in critical areas and occupy 19% of the non-static random access memory (SRAM) area. Instruction set architecture, microarchitecture, and physical implementation are tightly coupled to achieve a compact and power-efficient design. Correct operation has been observed at up to 5.6 GHz and 7.3 GHz, respectively, in 90-nm and 65-nm SOI technology.

A coherent system with two stepped frequency radar sensors separated by 1-2 m is presented for close range imaging. Resolution is achieved via range resolution from the two different sensor positions, exploiting both mono- and bistatic responses. First test had been made using vector measurement equipment for an antenna measurement range as radar simulator, and a mobile experimental system was built up and tested including stationary and mobile targets.
In this study, we measured the intracellular zinc (Zn) concentration of normal blood lymphocytes and of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) lymphocytes using anodic stripping voltometry analysis of Ficoll-Hypaque-isolated cells. A significant difference was found between the mean Zn concentration of normal lymphocytes (10.1 ± 0.8 ng106 cells) and those from patients with CLL (4.3 ± 0.4 ng) (P < 0.01). Patients with late-stage CLL had significantly less intracellular lymphocyte Zn (ng/106 cells) than did early stage patients, 3.5 ± 0.4 and 5.8 ± 0.8, respectively (P < 0.05). Overall, in the total patient populations, there was a significant inverse correlation between the absolute peripheral blood lymphocytosis and Zn concentration/106 cells. Concentration of Zn in serum was within the normal range among all patients. There was no correlation between lymphocyte Zn levels and proportion of B- and T-lymphocyte subpopulations. Exogenous Zn did not amplify mitogen response of lymphocytes. The implications of these findings in lymphocyte function in CLL are discussed.
Developing grains were harvested from wheat plants grown in pots which had received additional late P-fertilizer applications. By sequential extraction of milled grain samples of different developmental stages total P (P tot ) and the P-fractions lipid-P (P lip ), phytin-P (P phy ), inorganic and soluble ester-P (P i+e ) and residual-P (P res ) were determined.-Due to the late P-application, grain yield, P tot , and P phy content of ripe grains were increased by 14%, 58%, and 80% respectively, compared to the control. 93 % of the P which accumulated additionally in the grains as a result of the late P-application, were found to be P phy .-During grain development the amounts of P tot and P phy per 1000 kernels increased steeply whereas those of P lip and P res were not significantly affected by the stage of grain development or by the rate of P-application. P i+e increased during the first stages of grain development but subsequently decreased towards nearly the same low level regardless of the treatment.-The increased phytin concentration in the ripe grains resulted in a decreased zinc bioavailability as was indicated by feeding experiments with growing male rats.
