The accelerating effect of laser on fracture consolidation is known However, in all the studies done so far, this effect, on the nonproblematic fractures in respects to consolidation has been demonstrated. In this particular srudy on rabbit patella fracture where the problem of consotidation is evident, the accelarating effect of laser has been studied. On 24 patellas of 12 rabbits cerclage operation has been performed after transverse fracture and He-Ne Laser has been applied. Results have been evaluated in terms of radiology, microscopy and macroscopy.
The aims of this study were to describe the frequency of odontogenic tumours (OT) based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) 4th edition of Head and Neck Tumours in Turkey, to compare the results with other regions and to assess the frequency changes of OT worldwide after the new WHO classification. OT were selected from the pathology department's files between 1971-2018. In a total of 1231 OT, 1215 (98.7%) were benign, whereas malignant OT were only 16 cases (1.3%). The three most common tumours were ameloblastoma (n = 366, 29.7%), odontoma (n = 335, 27.2% both complex and compound types), and odontogenic myxoma (n = 190, 15.4%), respectively. After the 2017 classification, the decrease of OT frequency was found among 20%-42% in the selected epidemiological series because of re-classification of some lesions. The pattern of incidence in the Turkish population is similar to that in other populations. However, there are some differences in the frequency of the tumour types. It is obvious that the relative frequency of odontogenic tumours worldwide will change based on the new classification. It should be kept in mind that this is not a real decrease of OT cases. These marked changes in the frequency and prevalence of OT is just related to reclassification of some entities.

Conclusions:Our data suggest possible division of the 4NQO model into subtypes.Lesion associated genomic copy number alterations and mutations are being determined to identify molecular and evolutionary relationships among lesion types and possible model subtypes.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a clinically aggressive developmental odontogenic cyst with a high recurrence rate as 62%. Oroantral communication (OAC) is a gateway through the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity, which, if not treated, will develop into oroantral fistula or chronical sinus diseases. Different methods for closure of OAC were described but only few of them have common usage. In recent years, the use of a pedicled buccal fat pad (BFP) in closure of large oroantral defects has been become popular. In our patient, the OAC resulted from the surgical removal of OKC was closed with BFP.

Objectives: Pediatric odontogenic lesions are rare clinical entities and are not well addressed in the otolaryngology literature. Knowledge of the biologic and clinical behavior of these lesions and their basic features such as location and age are key aspects for otolaryngologists in developing an early clinical differential diagnosis, such that they can provide adequate treatment.Methods: Six thousand histologically-diagnosed odontogenic lesions from a 40-year period were reviewed. Pediatric patients (745 cases, 12.7%) aged up to 17 years were selected and reevaluated. The patients were divided into three age groups according to dentition periods: primary dentition (0-5 years), mixed dentition (6-12 years), and permanent dentition (13-17 years). Clinical data, including age, sex, and location, were collected from pathology records.Results: Of the total of 745 cases, 596 specimens (80%) were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts and 149 specimens (20%) were diagnosed as odontogenic tumors. The most frequent odontogenic cysts were radicular cysts (48.4%), followed by dentigerous cysts (16.7%). The most common odontogenic tumor was odontoma (8.05%).Conclusion: This study shows that all odontogenic lesions in the pediatric group are benign. Odontogenic tumors are relatively rare in this age group. Knowledge of the biological and histopathological behaviors of odontogenic lesions and their basic features such as location and age is a key aspect for developing an early clinical differential diagnosis and providing adequate treatment. Abstract Purpose: The incidence of the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is around 50% of all head and neck cancer (HNC), the sixth most common type of cancer in the world. Aberrant hyper/hypo-methylation in the promoter region of some known or putative tumor suppressor/protoonco-genes occurs frequently during the development of various cancers including OSCC. Both of genetic and environmental factors play roles in the carcinogenesis of malignant lesions. Etiological factors predisposing to OSCC are smoking, alcohol and tobacco consumption, snuffuse, viral factors, chronic irritation, iron and various vitamin deficiencies, poor oral hygiene and diseases such as syphilis. Despite the advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment, the 5-year survival rate of OSCC patients is poor and because of advanced stage of disease, it has high mortality and morbidity. Another the most important ethiological factor of OSCC is oral premalignant lesions (OPML), since OPML is related with malignant transformation. In our study, we included three different OPML associated with different risks of leading to malignancy: Oral leukoplakia has a high risk of conversion into malignancy, whereas oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid dysplasia are associated with lower risk. We aimed to investigate the epigenetic characterization of OSCC and OPML relative to the epigenetic changes in these groups. Experimental Design: Tumor and corresponding healthy tissues from 12 and 10 Turkish patients with OPML and OSCC, respectively were collected. The samples were analyzed histopatologically and after DNA extraction and bisulfite modification, methylation patterns of the samples were investigated by using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 (450K) BeadChip array. Results: According to our preliminary results obtained from the methylation array experiments, CpG regions in the UOX, ABCC12, FCRLB, ABL2, LGR6 and SLC22A18 genes were found unmethylated while CpGs located in YPEL-3 were highly methylated (p<0.005). Conclusion: We concluded the UOX, ABCC12, FCRLB, ABL2, LGR6, SLC22A18 and YPEL-3 may be potential biomarker candidate genes playing role in the transformation mechanism of OPML/OSCC. ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes an increased production of free radicals that can impair bone healing. Melatonin is a hormone secreted mainly by the pineal gland, which participates in the neutralization process of free radicals. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate histologic and biochemical effects of supplemental melatonin administration on bone healing and antioxidant defense mechanism in diabetic rats. Material and Methods Eighty-six Sprague-Dawley male rats were used in this study. Diabetes mellitus was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of 65 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). Surgical bone defects were prepared in the tibia of each animal. Diabetic animals and those in control groups were treated either with daily melatonin (250 μg/animal/day/i.p.) diluted in ethanol, only ethanol, or sterile saline solution. Rats were humanely killed at the 10th and 30th postoperative days. Plasma levels of Advanced Oxidation Protein Products (AOPP), Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) were measured. The number of osteoblasts, blood vessels and the area of new mineralized tissue formation were calculated in histologic sections. Results At the 10th day, DM+MEL (rats receiving both STZ and melatonin) group had significantly higher number of osteoblasts and blood vessels as well as larger new mineralized tissue surfaces (p<0.05 for each) when compared with DM group. At the 30th day, DM group treated with melatonin had significantly lower levels of AOPP and MDA than those of DM group (p<0.05). Conclusion Melatonin administration in STZ induced diabetic rats reduced oxidative stress related biomarkers and showed beneficial effects on bone healing at short term.
The aim of this study to describe the clinical and cytological features of an Oral Exfoliative Leukoedema case of a 10- years- old child.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a commonly seen malignant epithelial neoplasm of the oral cavity which is characterized by variable clinical manifestations. It arises from dysplastic oral squamous epithelium. By considering the pathogenesis of SCC, the smooth and intact surface for this lesion is not usual. A 76-year-old male patient who has been referred to Marmara University, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology Clinic had a complaint of a non-healing and progressively enlarging lesion on the left mandibular buccal mucosa and alveolar ridge. Patient has a history of operation for prostate carcinoma about 2 years ago. No radiotherapy or chemotherapy was given, yet he is under control with routine tasks once a year. Under local anesthesia incisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma as definite diagnosis. Consequently, the patient was referred to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department where the lesion was treated by surgery.
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the accuracy of VELscope® (VE) and its capacity to assess oral dysplasia and malignancy compared to histopathological examination.
Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon, benign lesion that occurs in the oral cavity, skin, or genital organs as a verrucous, papillomatous, or flat papule with varying colours. Histopathologically, VX is characterized by acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, and parakeratosis with deep extension of the rete ridges and an associated neutrofphilic infiltrate. The accumulation of numerous xanthoma cells (foamy macrophages) are shown in the connective tissue between epithelial ridges. The treatment is conservative excision and no recurrence has been reported.
Skuamoz hucreli karsinom (SCC) oral kavitede en sik gorulen ve farkli klinik belirtiler ile karakterize malign epitelyal bir neoplazmdir. SCC displastik oral skuamoz epitelinden dogmaktadir. SCC patogenezi goz onune alinirsa olusan lezyon icin puruzsuz ve saglam bir yuzey olagan degildir. 52 yasinda kadin hasta disetinde buyume sikayeti ile Marmara Universitesi Dis Hekimligi Fakultesi Oral Diagnoz Klinigine yonlendirlmistir. Hastanin tibbi anamnezinde herhangi bir sistemik hastalik olmadigi ogrenilmistir. Ayrica lenfadenopati tespit edilmemistir. Sol maksiller birinci molar bolgede bukkal ve palatinal mukozada verrukoz bir goruntu olusturan lezyon ve dokuda hipertrofi izlenmistir. Klinik muayeneye ek olarak ilgili bolgeden once smear biyopsi ve sonrasinda ise insizyonel biyopsi alinmistir. Histopatolojik inceleme sonucunda lezyonun ‘skuamoz hucreli karsinom’ tanisi ile malign karakterde oldugu saptanmistir. Sonuc olarak hasta lezyonun cerrahi operasyon ile elimine edilmesi icin Kulak, Burun, Bogaz (KBB) departmanina yonlendirilmistir.
OZET 33 yasinda bir erkek hastada disetinde yer alan primer tuberkuloz olgusu bildirilmistir. Sistemik Incelemeler sonucunda hastanin baska bir bolgesinde lezyon saptanmamis ve olgu primer olarak kabul edilmistir. Olgumuzun klinik ve histopatolojik ozellikleri kaynak bilgilerle karsilastirilarak tartisilmistir. Anahtar sozcuk: Priner diseti tuberkulozu. ABSTRACT A case of gingival tuberculosis discovered in a 33 years old male is reported. As a result of systemic investigation no other lesion was found in other organs of the patient and case was accepted as primary. Sicanlarin sag Tibia'lannda sogutma yapilmadan sol Tibia'lannda ise serum fizyolojik ile sogutularak 12.000 devirli tur motoru ile tam olmayan kirik meydana getirilmistir. Hayvanlar 3. gun, 7. gun ve 21. gunde oldurulerek kemik iyilesmesi histopatolojik olarak incelendi. 7. gunden baslayarak sogutma uygulanan gruptaki iyilesmenin kontrol grubuna oranla biraz daha hizli oldugu saptandi. Calismanin sonucunda kemik icindeki operasyonlar sirasinda tur motoru ile calisirken, yuksek isinin kemik iyilesmesine olan olumsuz etkisini ortadan kaldirmak amaciyla mutlaka sogutma yapilmasi gerektigi vurgulandi. An experimental investigation is made in order to explore the effect of heat which comes out as a result of burring bone tissue during the bone operations like impacted tooth and periapical resections in practical dentistry, especially in oral surgery. In this investigation 12 rats of Wistar Albino type are used, an incomplete fracture is made by 12.000 r.p.m. rottary burin the right Tibbia of the rats without cooling and in the left Tibia pith cooling by saline solution. The rats were killed in the third, seventh, fifteenth and twenty first days, and bone healing was investigated histopathologically. The healing in the experimental group with cooling was found to be slightly faster than the control group beginning with the seventh day. As the result of this in investigation, it is emphasized that cooling sholud be made while using rotory burs during bone operations, in order to avoid the negative effect of heat on bone healing.
