BACKGROUND:There are many methods to repair periocular defects, including local tissue flaps and free tissue transplantation. However, auricular composite tissue grafting for repairing periocular defects has not been previously reported. OBJECTIVES:To investigate the use of auricular composite tissue grafts for the repair of periocular defects. METHODS:The medical records of 10 patients who underwent periocular tumor excision and eyelid repair with auricular composite tissue grafts were reviewed between October 2021 and October 2025. Various parameters, including demographic and clinical data, defect diameter, primary defect closure, complications, and follow-up time, were recorded. The donor site was repaired using a retroauricular island flap. RESULTS:All 10 patients (4 women, 6 men) aged 34 to 79 years underwent resection of malignant orbital tumors. The diameter of the postoperative defect was 15 to 25 mm. The periocular defects were closed primarily using autologous auricular composite tissue grafts. No postoperative complications or tumor recurrences were observed. All the patients were satisfied with the results. The patients were followed up for 4 to 52 months.
Background Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is widely used to treat carotid artery stenosis (CAS). However, the effects of CEA on unilateral CAS‐induced cognitive impairment and the underlying mechanism remain poorly understood. Methods and Results Thirteen patients diagnosed with unilateral severe CAS underwent pre‐ and post‐CEA assessments, including 18 fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐ d ‐glucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive assessments, and routine blood tests before and after CEA. Unilateral carotid common artery occlusion and ligation release (reperfusion) surgeries were performed in mice to mimic CAS and CEA. Cognitive function, cerebral blood flow, and white matter damage were evaluated in mice using the Morris water maze test, Doppler flowmetry, laser‐speckle imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, Luxol fast blue staining, transmission electron microscopy, and western blot assays post unilateral carotid common artery occlusion and reperfusion. Genomic sequencing of the white matter was performed to explore the potential underlying mechanism. CEA significantly enhanced the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores in patients with CAS and preoperative cognitive impairment. Moreover, CEA led to notable improvements in cerebral blood flow, energy metabolism, and white matter integrity, while concurrently reducing blood inflammation. In the mouse model, reperfusion surgery alleviated cognitive deficits, increased cerebral blood flow, and alleviated white matter damage following unilateral carotid common artery occlusion. Furthermore, transcriptional surveys have revealed substantial alterations in the upregulation of Nrf2 signaling and metabolic pathways, coupled with the inhibition of neuroinflammation, cellular communication, and immune cell population signaling following reperfusion. Conclusions CEA ameliorated CAS‐induced cognitive dysfunction by improving the cerebral functional structure. These beneficial effects may be attributed to their antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties.
OBJECTIVES:The parapharyngeal space (PPS) and infratemporal fossa (ITF) present significant challenges for endoscopic skull base surgery due to their complex anatomy and lack of clear bony landmarks. This study aims to propose a systematic compartmentalization of the PPS and ITF, based on key anatomical structures, to optimize surgical planning and approaches. METHODS:To retain a precise bony reference framework, the walls of the maxillary sinus and pterygoid bone were preserved. Anatomical dissection was conducted along muscular planes, dividing the region into 3 spaces. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed compartmentalization were evaluated through cadaveric studies and verified in clinical cases. RESULTS:The PPS and ITF were classified into 3 distinct spaces based on the positioning and orientation of the medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, levator veli palatini, and stylopharyngeus muscles. The first space is located anterior to the pterygoid muscles, the second lies between the pterygoid muscles and the levator veli palatini/stylopharyngeus, and the third is posterior to these latter muscles. Among 24 clinical cases reviewed, 3, 8, and 13 lesions were situated in the first, second, and third spaces, respectively. Surgical outcomes were favorable, with complete lesion resection and no intraoperative or postoperative complications observed. CONCLUSIONS:A three-space model of the PPS and ITF, defined by specific muscle planes, provides a structured framework to guide endoscopic skull base approaches. This model allows for targeted selection of surgical routes based on lesion location and its relationship with the internal carotid artery, aiming to minimize procedural risks.
AbstractObjectiveTo assess the repair method of exposure or fracture of the porous high-density polyethylene ear framework after total auricle reconstruction.Study designA prospective case study.MethodsFrom April 2018 to October 2021, 11 patients with framework exposure or fracture after total auricle reconstruction were admitted to the hospital for repair. In these 11 patients, the repair was performed using (1) a temporal muscle flap combined with free skin graft in 5 patients, (2) a mastoid fascia flap combined with free skin graft in 2 patients, (3) a simple local skin flap in 1 patient, (4) combination of a temporalis muscle flap and a mastoid fascia flap together with free skin graft in 2 patients, and (5) a Su-Por helix material combined with a temporal muscle flap and free skin graft in 1 patient.ResultsAfter follow-up for 3–36 months, except for one patient in whom local exposure again occurred at the same site, the framework was in a good shape in the other patients, and all the skin graft survived.ConclusionThe defect of the upper part of the auricle can be repaired using a temporal muscle flap combined with temporal muscle fascia and skin graft. The defect of the middle and lower part of the auricle can be repaired using a mastoid fascia flap combined with skin graft. For framework fracture, the damaged site can be first strengthened with another ear material and then combined with the adjacent fascia flap and free skin graft.
Background: Epigenetic regulation plays significant role in the development of the inner ear. It is known that Ring1B can monoubiquitinate H2AK119 to compact nucleosomes and block gene transcription. Ring1B plays crucial role in embryonic development, heterochromatin function, stem cell maintenance and so on. However, it is still unknown whether Ring1B plays a role in the development of inner ear. Methods: Here, we used postnatal C56BL/6J mice to examine the expression of Ring1B in the cochlea using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and immunofluorescence staining. Results: Ring1B mRNA expression was observed at postnatal day 0 and postnatal day 14 cochlea. Ring1B protein was expressed in the cochlea on postnatal days 0, 14, and 30. The Ring1B was observed to be expressed in spiral ganglion cells at postnatal days 0, 14, and 30. Additionally, Ring1B was expressed in hair cells at postnatal days 0, 14, and 30. Conclusion: Our results provide the basic expression pattern of Ring1B and might be helpful for future investigations of the detailed role of Ring1B in the cochlea.
Rationale: Previous genetic studies of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have limitations in terms of precise case definition, integrated quantitative traits, and interpretation of genetic functions; thus, the heritability of OSA remains poorly explained. Objectives: To identify novel genetic variants associated with OSA and objective sleep-related traits and to explore their functional roles. Methods: A genome-wide association study was performed in 20,590 Han Chinese individuals (5,438 OSA and 15,152 control samples). Human samples and point mutation knockin mice were used for follow-up investigation of gene functions. Measurements and Main Results: Two characteristic studywide significant loci (P, 2.6331029) for OSA were identified: the PACRG intronic variant rs6455893 on 6q26 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.62; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39-1.89; P = 6.98310210) and the missense variant rs3746804 (p.Pro267Leu) in the riboflavin transporter SLC52A3 on 20p13 (OR = 0.83; 95% CI, 0.79-0.88; P = 7.57310210). In addition, 18 genome-wide significant loci associated with quantitative OSA and objective sleep-related traits were identified, 5 of which exceeded the study-wide significance threshold. Rs3746804 was associated with elevated serum riboflavin concentrations, and the corresponding mutation in mice increased riboflavin concentrations, suggesting that this variant may facilitate riboflavin uptake and riboflavin-dependent physiological activity. Conclusions: We identified several novel genome-wide significant loci associated with OSA and objective sleep-related traits. Our findings provide insight into the genetic architecture of OSA and suggest that SLC52A3 might be a therapeutic target, whereas riboflavin might be a therapeutic agent.
Objective: To evaluate the results of excimer laser ablation (ELA) in the treatment of lower limb atherosclerotic obliterans (ASO). Methods: From June 2019 to March 2020, patients who underwent ELA combined with drug-coated balloon (DCB) for lower limb atherosclerotic obliterans (ASO) were enrolled. Demographics, lesion characteristics, procedure-related outcomes and complications were collected and analyzed. Results: Thirty patients were enrolled, including 21 males and 9 females. The mean age was (76.5±10.5) years. The mean lesion length was (11.7±6.4) cm. A total of 41 lesions, including in-stent restenosis (ISR) in 12 (29.3%), chronic totally occlusion (CTO) at initial treatment in 24 (58.5%), and severe stenosis in 5 (12.2%) patients. Sixteen (51.6%) patients were classified as Peripheral Arterial Calcium Scoring System (PACSS) category 4. The technical success rate was 93.5%. Incidence of distal embolization and bailout stenting was 12.9% and 6.5%, respectively. The mean follow-up time was (6.6±3.0) months. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) was significantly increased from 0.43(0.32,0.55) preoperatively to 0.91(0.87,1.01) postoperatively (Z=-5.43, P<0.01) and 0.82(0.73,1.02) (Z=-3.99, P<0.01) three months after surgery. The 3-month major-amputation free survival rate was 96.7%, primary patency rate was 100%, the target lesion reintervention (TLR) rate was 0 and ulcer healing rate was 76.9%. Conclusion: Debulking of ELA is feasible and effective for both ISR and CTO at initial treatment, providing a new option for DCB preparation and reducing stent implantation.
Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a Zenith fenestrated aortic stent-graft (ZFEN) system in the treatment of short-necked aneurysms.Methods:The clinical data of 5 patients receiving F-EVAR in Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University from Mar 2018 to Sep 2019 according to the standards of short-necked abdominal aortic aneurysm and COOK ZFEN custom stent were retrospectively analyzed.Results:Patients' average age was (69±11) years old. The time of stent customization was 4-6 weeks. The average maximum diameter of AAA was (60.8±14.0) mm. The average proximal neck diameter was (26.0±2.6) mm and the average length anchoring zone was (6.4±2.2) mm. The rate of technical success was 100%. There was no intraoperative loss of visceral vessels and stent displacement. The meane follow-up time was 6.8 months. The perioperative mortality was 0, and there were no other major complications. There were 3 patients with simple type Ⅱ endoleak and 1 patient with type Ⅲ endoleak. The endoleaks disappeared in 4 patients during follow-up of 3-12 months. 1 patient suffered with type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ endoleak, and the visceral vessels and branching stents were patent in all patients.Conclusion:The short term result of COOK ZFEN stent-graft system was safe and feasible for the treatment of short-necked AAA.
Intracerebral hemorrhage- (ICH-) induced secondary brain injury (SBI) is a very complex pathophysiological process. However, the molecular mechanisms and drug targets of SBI are highly intricate and still elusive, yet a clear understanding is crucial for the treatment of SBI. In the current study, we aimed to confirm that nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/Optineurin- (OPTN-) mediated mitophagy alleviated SBI by inhibiting nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation based on the isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantization (iTRAQ) quantification proteomics. Human ICH brain specimens were collected for iTRAQ-based proteomics analysis. Male Nrf2 wild-type (WT) and knockout (KO) mice were employed to establish ICH murine models. The survival rate, hematoma volume, neurofunctional outcomes, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, brain edema, spatial neuronal death, NLRP3 inflammasome, inflammatory response, mitochondrial function, and mitophagy level were evaluated after ICH. The iTRAQ quantification analysis showed that the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), Nrf2 and NLRP3, were closely associated with the initiation and development of SBI after ICH. The Nrf2 KO mice had a significantly lower survival rate, bigger hematoma volume, worse neurological deficits, and increased BBB disruption, brain edema, and neuronal death when compared with the Nrf2 WT mice after ICH. Furthermore, Nrf2 KO enhanced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and neuroinflammation as evidenced by the NF-κB activation and various proinflammatory cytokine releases following ICH. Moreover, Nrf2 could interact with and modulate the mitophagy receptor OPTN, further mediating mitophagy to remove dysfunctional mitochondria after ICH. Furthermore, OPTN small interfering RNA (siRNA) increased the NLRP3 inflammasome activation by downregulating mitophagy level and enhancing mitochondrial damage in the Nrf2 WT mice after ICH. Together, our data indicated that Nrf2/OPTN inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation, possibly via modulating mitophagy, therefore alleviating SBI after ICH.
Objective:To summarize the early and intermediate outcomes of second-grade false-lumen endovascular occlusive repair (FLEVOR) for aortic dissection.Methods:The clinical data of 12 patients undergoing second-grade FLEVOR after proximal repair of aortic dissection at our center from Aug 2016 to Aug 2019 was retrospectively analyzed.Results:The mean age was (51.3±14.9) years old. Four patients received open repair due to Stanford type A aortic dissection previously, the other 8 patients underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair for Stanford type B aortic dissection. The time to the proximal repair varied from 3 months to 16 years. The technical success rate was 100%. Visceral ischemia, early spinal cord ischemia and in-hospital death did not occur perioperatively. The mean follow-up time was 16.7 months. Persistent false lumen perfusion was found in 3 patients, complete thrombosis of false lumen was achieved in the other 8 patients. The maximum diameter of abdominal aorta decreased in 8 (72.7%) patients.Conclusions:FLEVOR could block the blood flow from the false lumen and induce the thrombosis of false lumen, which promotes the aortic remodeling. Meanwhile, FLEVOR could protect the blood supply of spinal cord and viscera, and reduce the risk of type Ⅱ endoleaks.
Objective:To evaluate the effect of Rotarex in peripheral arterial disease (PAD).Methods:The clinical data of 90 PAD patients treated with Rotarex from Aug 2018 to Feb 2020 were retrospectively analyzed.Results:Among the 90 patients, 45 patients had atherosclerotic obliterans complicated with acute thrombosis (ASOCAT), 27 patients had graft restenosis or reocclusion, 16 patients had primary or embolism-induced thrombosis, 2 patients had traumatic or iatrogenic arterial occlusion. Except for 2 patients undergoing hybrid surgery, 88 patients underwent endovascular treatment. Two patients died perioperatively. Within 12 months follow-up, 2 patients died, 4 patients underwent major amputation, target arteries of 10 patients were re-stenosed or re-occluded and 5 patients were lost to follow-up. Compared with the preoperative ankle-branchial index (ABI), significant increase was observed in the 12-month ABI (0.80±0.22 vs. 0.43±0.16, P<0.01). The 12-month restenosis/re-occlusion-free rate was 82.7%, and the 12-month major amputation-free survival (MAFS) was 91.6%. Conclusion:For PAD patients, acceptable outcomes can be achieved with reasonable use of Rotarex for debulking, combined with balloon, stent and other techniques to correct the residual lesions.
Objective: We report the morphologic characteristics and endovascular treatment of primary infrarenal aortic dissections (PIRADs). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with 38 consecutive PIRAD patients between January 2010 and May 2016 in our vascular center. Patient demographics, morphologic characteristics, endovascular modalities, and periprocedural and follow-up outcomes were recorded. Patients with symptomatic PIRADs or asymptomatic PIRADs of a maximum diameter >30 mm were indicated for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). We proposed a morphologic categorization of PIRADs into two types (I and II) according to the location of the entry tears and an endovascular strategy for treating type I PIRADs with tubular stent grafts (SGs) and type II PIRADs with bifurcated SGs. Results: According to the categorization, the study recruited 13 patients with type I and 25 patients with type II PIRADs. The patients were predominantly men, with an average age of 60.8 +/- 15.2 years. Type I PIRADs usually had larger true lumens (22.6 +/- 6.3 vs 13.6 +/- 4.0 mm; P = .002) and relatively smaller false lumens (8.4 +/- 2.3 vs 19.9 +/- 16.1 mm; P = .012). Type II PIRADs had more entry tears (2.2 +/- 0.6 vs 1.7 +/- 0.6; P = .024) and longer dissections (109.4 +/- 38.8 vs 73.9 +/- 39.0 mm; P = .011). All patients underwent EVAR, with 19 tubular and 22 bifurcated SGs. One patient died during the hospital stay. The technical success rate was 94.8% (36/38), and the clinical success rate was 97.4% (37/38). During follow-up of 36 patients for 28.8 +/- 17.7 months, 2 patients with type II PIRADs developed left iliac extension occlusion at 3 and 6 months after EVAR, and only 1 patient underwent reintervention. All patients survived throughout the follow-up. No endoleak or aortic enlargement was observed. Computed tomography angiography demonstrated a patent infrarenal aorta with completely thrombosed false lumen in all PIRAD patients (36/36 [100.0%]). In both types of PIRAD, EVAR yielded a significant decrease in the maximum diameter of the infrarenal aorta, with a significant increase in the true lumen size and a significant decrease in the false lumen size (P < .05). Conclusions: The morphologic categorization of PIRADs based on the location of the entry tears appeared to be feasible. The endovascular strategy was safe and effective, with high rates of technical success and clinical success and favorable follow-up outcomes.
In this meta-analysis, we evaluated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) vitamin D) level and the risk of total fractures and hip fractures. Low serum 25(OH) vitamin D level is associated with an increased risk of total and hip fractures.
目的 探讨对于钬激光碎石取石术治疗泌尿结石患者围术期应用的护理措施,并总结经验.方法 选取98例于2014年11月~2015年11月在我院接受钬激光碎石取石术进行治疗的泌尿结石患者作为研究对象,随机将其分为两组:实验组,对照组且每组对象49例.对照组采用常规护理措施,实验组采用围术期针对性护理干预措施,观察并比较两组患者的术后并发症发生率和患者的护理满意度.结果 实验组的术后并发症发生率为8.16%,护理满意度为93.88%;对照组的术后并发症发生率为24.49%,护理满意度为79.59%.比较后,发现实验组各项数据均好于对照组,且组间差异明显(P<0.05),具有统计学意义.结论 将围术期针对性护理干预措施应用于行钬激光碎石取石术治疗泌尿结石患者的护理中,不仅能够有效地降低术后并发症的发生概率,并且在促进患者康复及提高手术效果方面也具有良好的作用,值得在临床上进行推广应用.
One of the main pathogeneses of varicocoele and infertility is oxidative stress (OS), nevertheless, the oxidative damaged DNA in infertile patients with varicocoele remains poorly clarified. The objective of this study was to comprehensively investigate whether sperm DNA damage and OS injury were related with different issues of varicocoele. According to the varicocoele practice guidelines, surgical treatment was not indicated in the infertile patients with subclinical (SubVc, n = 15) and normozoospermic clinical varicocoele (NCVc, n = 22), the infertile astheno/oligozoospermic patients with clinical varicocoele (AOCVc, n = 51) would receive micro-surgerical varicocoelectomy. Normozoospermic healthy donors with proven fertility (n = 25) were recruited as controls. Thiobarbituric acid and sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) methods were preformed to analyze seminal lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI). We found that AOCVc and NCVc, except SubVc, could significantly elevate sperm DFI and seminal MDA levels. Varicocoelectomy could substantially improve semen parameters, and reduce sperm DFI and seminal MDA levels in the AOCVc patients. However, the non-operative NCVc patients would possibly suffer a severe deterioration of semen parameters accompanied by aberrantly higher levels of sperm DFI and seminal MDA, whereas no differences occurred in the non-operative SubVc patients. Sperm DFI level in the pregnant group was much lower compared to the non-pregnant group (AOCVc, p < 0.01; NCVc, p < 0.05) with the best cutoff value of 19.73%, while no differences in seminal MDA (p > 0.05) could be observed. Finally, a strong positive correlation was found between sperm DFI and seminal MDA (Rs = 0.504, p < 0.01), and they were also closely correlated with crucial semen parameters except normal morphology. Therefore, sperm DNA damage in clinical varicocoele, but not in SubVc, might be associated with the role of seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mediating such damage. Varicocoelectomy could be beneficial for reducing OS injury and sperm DFI, and males with low sperm fragmented-DNA level had more opportunities to become pregnant.
Objective To evaluate the effect of endovascular repair (EVAR) on ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA).Methods We conducted a retrospective study on 36 RAAA patients undergoing EVAR at our vascular institute between January 2003 and November 2014.Patients with anatomic suitability were treated by EVAR.Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were used to predict the risk factors for post-EVAR mortality.Results There were 32 males and 4 females,age at 68 ± 14.Patients' average GAS was (79 ± 19).Perioperative mortality was 27.8%,and the intraoperative mortality was 8.3%.Intraoperative endoleak was found in 9 cases (25%).The overall survival rate was 61.1% during the following-up period (mean 37.9 months).Reintervention rate during 30-day postoperative and follow-up periods was 36.1%.Multivariate Logistic regression analyses demonstrated intraperitoneal rupture (odds ratio,0.143;95% CI 0.030-0.694;P =0.016) and coronary heart disease (odds ratio,0.072;95% CI0.006-0.898;P =0.041) were independent risk factors for the 30-day mortality.Only intraperitoneal rupture was associated with the higher midterm mortality (odds ratio,4.852;95% CI 1.046-22.499;P =0.044).Conclusions EVAR is safe and effective for RAAA patients with anatomic suitability.Coronary heart disease and intraperitoneal rupture were the independent predicting factors for post-EVAR mortality.
Objectives To report the epidemiology and in-hospital mortality results of the thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) patients in our hospital during the last 5 years.Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the 1 133 TAD patients (928 male,205 female,mean age 53.9y) from Jan 2009 to Dec 2013.We extracted the in-hospital information and performed comparisons of the in-hospital mortality within different groups by four stages and three kinds of treatments of TAD.Results The in-hospital mortality of open surgery for type A TAD was 59.3% in superacute phase,14.8% in acute phase,and 3.7% in subacute phase,P =0.047.While in endovascular repair the mortality remained similar among different TAD phases,P =0.72.The treatment of Stanford type B dissection was mainly thoracic endovascular repair,the in-hospital mortalities in four stages was not significantly different,P =0.294.Conclusion The mortality of open surgery for acute stanford type A TAD is very high in superacute phase as a life =saving procedure.
Objectives To assess erectile function in middle-aged and older men with asexuality status and further analyze their specific reasons for this condition. Subjects and Methods Men who had regular sexual intercourse attempts (sex frequency≥1 time per month) were classified into mild erectile dysfunction (ED), moderate to severe ED and non-ED according to International Index of Erectile Function-5, and men having no sexual intercourse attempts for at least 6 months were defined as having an asexuality status. The risk factors associated with ED were collected in a sample of 1,531 Chinese men aged 40 to 80 years, and the self-report reasons for asexuality were recorded in asexual cohort individually. Comparative analyses and multivariate regression models were conducted among these groups. Results The prevalence rates of ED and asexuality status were 49.9% and 37.2%. The asexuality status group had higher risk factors than the moderate to severe ED group in terms of old age (age≥65, adjusted odds ratio (OR) 17.69 versus (Vs.) 7.19), diabetes (crude OR: 2.40 Vs. 2.36) and hypertension (crude OR: 1.78 Vs. 1.72). The specific reasons for the asexuality status were “erectile difficulty” (52.9%), “do not care about sexuality” (53.5%)”, “no longer necessary to have sexuality at this age” (47.7%), “severe stress” (44.4%), “severe fatigue” (26.3%) and “masturbation” (26.9%). Conclusions Men with an asexual status suffer from higher risk factors for ED than men with moderate to severe ED. The majority of this asexual status could be attributed to a full ED, although the reasons for this transient asexuality also involved sexual attitudes and interests, sexual partners and masturbation.
Excessive apoptotic spermatozoon death is associated with male infertility. Leptin regulates apoptosis in several cell types. We prospectively investigated if seminal plasma leptin mediates spermatozoon apoptosis in 74 varicocele (VC) patients and 70 leucocytospermia patients. Spermatozoa from 40 normospermic men were used as controls. Routine semen analysis, spermatozoon apoptosis rate, seminal plasma leptin, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured. In VC and leucocytospermia patients, seminal plasma leptin levels and spermatozoon apoptosis rates were significantly higher compared with controls. In the VC group, seminal plasma ROS levels were significantly higher compared with controls; there were no significant differences in TNF-α levels. In the leucocytospermia group, both ROS and TNF-α levels were significantly higher compared with controls. In both the VC and leucocytospermia groups, there was a significant positive correlation between the spermatozoon apoptosis rate and leptin levels and ROS and leptin levels. There was a significant correlation between leptin and TNF-α levels in the leucocytospermia group. Seminal plasma leptin levels correlate significantly with spermatozoon apoptosis rate, and leptin may be a spermatozoon pro-apoptotic factors. The generation of ROS is a possible mechanism. Leptin may induce apoptosis via TNF-α in leucocytospermia patients.
