A new hairy fungus beetle, Danophaea cimbrica gen. et sp. nov. from the tribe Mycetophagini (Mycetophaginae), is described from late Eocene Danish amber. The new genus differs from the genus Typhaea Stephens, 1829 in that it has a short, triangular mesepimeron and mesoventrite, shorter precoxal portion of the prosternum, bent posteriorly posterior edge of mesoventrite, and elongated ninth and tenth antennomeres. It also differs from the genus Aggerbille Legalov et Perkovsky, 2024, in that its body is covered by shorter setae, and its antennal club is wider. Furthermore, the shortest distance between the mesocoxal and metacoxal cavities is distinctly greater than the length of the first abdominal ventrite at the same point. It can also be distinguished from the genus Olmia Legalov et Perkovsky, 2025 by the fact that its antennae are shorter, extending beyond the middle of the pronotum; its eleventh antennomere is distinctly shorter than ninth and tenth antennomeres combined; and its body is two times larger. This is the first record of Crowsonium succinium Abdullah, 1964 in Danish amber.
A new genus, Olmia gen. nov. with type species Olmia drevlyanica sp. nov. from the tribe Mycetophagini (Mycetophaginae), is described from late Eocene Rovno amber. The new genus differs from the genus Neotriphyllus Lawrence et al., 2014 by widely separated mesocoxal cavities, very long last antennomere and small unicolorous body. This is the first named Mycetophagidae from late Eocene Rovno amber.
A new genus, Anomalocys gen. nov. with type species Anomalocys lawrencei sp. nov., is described and illustrated from late Eocene Danish amber. The new genus differs from all other genera of the family Ciidae by its seven-segmented antennae with a compact club consists of three fused antennomeres. This is the first extinct genus of the family Ciidae.
The family Hybotidae (Insecta: Diptera, Empidoidea) is recorded for the first time from the bio-inclusions of Sakhalinian amber (Russia). Almost all inclusions studied belong to the subfamily Tachydromiinae. First results suggest that tachydromiines were not uncommon in a palaeo-biotope, where a resin known nowadays as Sakhalinian amber was produced. A new genus and species, Eoplatypalpus sachalinensis gen. et sp. nov., are described and illustrated. In addition, the inclusions of two tachydromiine species of unclear genera (or genus) have been examined but not named. Preliminarily, the palaeo-fauna of Tachydromiinae of Sakhalinian amber is characterised by the presence of only primitive representatives. They show an affinity with the most primitive extant genera of the subfamily (such as Symballophthalmus Becker and Megagrapha Melander) and with the group of extinct genera known from Upper Cretaceous inclusions (Cretoplatypalpus group of genera). The paleontological records of Tachydromiinae are briefly discussed. In addition, it is shown that Symballophthalmus clavilabrosus Hong described from Ypresian Fushun amber of China actually belongs to a different, as of yet uncertain genus. Consequently, fossils of the primitive extant genus Symballophthalmus remain unknown. An identification key to fossil genera of Tachydromiinae (exclusive of Drapetidini) is provided.
A new species of the tribe Orphilini (Dermestidae: Orphilinae), Orphilus dudkoi sp. nov., is described and illustrated in Priabonian Baltic amber. This species differs from the recent Orphilus niger (Rossi, 1790) in having a smaller body size, wider elytra and a narrower antennal club. This is the oldest record of the tribe Orphilini and the first discovery of the genus Orphilus Erichson, 1846 in the Eocene of Europe.
A new subfamily, genus and species of pseudochiridiid pseudoscorpions is described from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (Myanmar), including a detailed diagnosis and illustrations: Palaeochiridium insolitum gen. et sp. nov. (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones) is the first valid species of the family Pseudochiridiidae from Burmese amber. Diagnostic, biogeographic, paleohabitat and ecological features of this new species are presented and discussed, and are compared to the related extinct and extant species of this family.
The Omaliinae, a relatively large rove beetle subfamily, contains more than 1,700 extant species in about 120 genera and 23 extinct species in 17 genera (including 10 extinct genera). Omaliinae is currently composed of seven tribes (Newton, 2022). Among the fossil omaliines, twelve species are known from amber deposits (Shavrin et al., 2025): the Baltic amber (10 species in 6 genera), mid-Cretaceous Charentese amber (one species in one extinct genus), and the Dominican amber (one species in one genus). The anthophilous Eusphalerum Kraatz, 1857 is the single genus of the tribe Eusphalerini Hatch, 1957 and contains 270 extant species, distributed in the Holarctic Region, with several species known from the northern part of the Oriental Region (Newton, 2022). The tribe Eusphalerini can be recognized from other tribes of omaliines by the presence of broadened tarsomeres 1–4 with dense and long ventral setae, the morphology of the aedeagus and female accessory sclerites, and by some other features (Zanetti, 1987, 2014). Some species have modified elytra, sometimes they are sexually dimorphic (females of some species have strongly elongate elytra, sometimes covering entire length of the abdomen); some species have modified shape of the apical abdominal tergites, etc. (e.g., Zanetti, 1987). To date, two subgenera are known in the genus (Zanetti, 2014): the nominative subgenus and Pareusphalerum Coiffait, 1959. Several groups of species were established based on a set of some external and internal morphological features (e.g., Zanetti, 1987, 2014). Adults of Eusphalerum are known as pollen-feeders and live on flowers of different plants (Klinger, 1983). Only some other taxa in Omaliini have such trophic preferences: Amphichroum Kraatz, 1857, some species of Paraphloeostiba Steel, 1960, Xanthonomus Bernhauer, 1926, etc.
A new species of the family Nitidulidae, Plesiogethes mali sp.n., belonging to the extinct genus Plesiogethes gen. n., is described from larva from Zhitomir Region, Ukraine (Rovno amber). It is the first formally described beetle larva and first nitidulid from Rovno amber. Comparative analysis with a number of recent representatives of the family is provided. Based on the unique combination of characters, occurring in various extant subfamilies, it is proposed to place Plesiogethes gen. n. in Nitidulidae incertae sedis with possible relations to Cybocephalinae.
A new genus, Jiricateres Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, gen. nov., and three new extinct species of bark-gnawing beetles (Coleoptera, Lophocateridae), are described and illustrated from studied set of inclusions in Baltic and Rovno amber. The Baltic amber lophocaterid Promanodes alleni Kolibáč, 2011 is herein transferred to this genus. The identification key for the representatives of the genus, namely Jiricateres alleni (Kolibáč, 2011) comb. nov. J. storozhenkoi Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., J. damzeni Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., and J. ukrainicus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov. is provided.
The genus Turgaphilus Lyubarsky et Perkovsky, gen. nov. with the type species “Cryptophagites” capitatus Ponomarenko, 1990 is described from the latest Barremian–earliest Aptian Turga Formation, Transbaikalia. The new genus similar to the extant genus Xenoscelis Wollaston, 1864 but differs from it in pronotum strongly narrowed apically and procoxal cavities open externally. “Cryptophagites” elongatus Ponomarenko, 1990 probably belongs to the family Helotidae.
The genus Khasurtyphilus Lyubarsky & Perkovsky, gen. nov. (type species Khasurtyphilus storozhenkoi Lyubarsky, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov.) is described from the Lower Cretaceous of Western Transbaikalia, Russia. The new genus is morphologically similar to the extinct genus Turgaphilus Lyubarsky et Perkovsky, 2025 (Lower Cretaceous, Eastern Transbaikalia) but differs from it in having: a pronotum with a lateral tooth in the posterior third of its length, tarsomere 1 shorter than tarsomeres 2 and 3 combined, tarsomere 5 longer than tarsomere 1, and narrowly separated metacoxae. The genus Khasurtyphilus differs from the genus Isocryptophilus Li & Cai, 2024 (Erotyloidea) in: temples present; lateral margin of the pronotum with a tooth; epipleura complete; tarsomere 3 longer than tarsomere 2.
Seven new extinct species belonging to two subgenera (Amelyris Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, subgen. nov. and Asymelyris Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, subgen. nov.) within extinct genus Amelyris Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, gen. nov. are described and illustrated from inclusions in late Eocene European ambers (Baltic, Rovno, and Danish) as the first reliable fossils of the family Melyridae. The newly described taxa are included in the new tribe Amelyrini Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, trib. nov., which can be distinguished from the extant tribes of the subfamily by the following characters: (1) penultimate antennomeres oval-triangular with rounded edges, (2) elytral punctation between longitudinal carinae regular, arranged in three rows, (3) pronotum with strongly carinate lateral sides, (4) pronotal surface with pronounced foveolate punctation, (5) tarsomeres with strong semi-erect dark setae ventrally, and (6) body size comparatively small (2.53.8 mm). The keys to subfamilies and tribes of Melyridae, as well as to all species of the newly described genus, namely Amelyris (Amelyris) sveneldi Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., A. (Amelyris) elongatus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., A. (Amelyris) tricarinatus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., A. (Asymelyris) paucidentatus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., A. (Asymelyris) lupatus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., A. (Asymelyris) groehni Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., and A. (Asymelyris) jutlandicus Tshernyshev, Alekseev, Bukejs, Vasilenko, Legalov & Perkovsky, sp. nov., are provided.
A new subgenus and species of the braconid parasitoid of the tribe Centistini s. l. (Euphorinae), Centistoides (Palaeoides) magnioculus Belokobylskij, subgen. et sp. nov., from late Eocene Danish amber are described and illustrated from one female. This is the first time the tribe of euphorine parasitoids is reliably documented in the fossil record. A key to all genera and subgenera of this suprageneric taxonomic group is compiled. The discussion about position of the genus Parasyrrhizus Brues, composition of the tribe Centistini s. l., and the composition of the Danish amber hymenopteran fauna are provided.
†Rhantus villumi sp. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of a single specimen from the earliest Eocene Fur Formation, Denmark. With an estimated age of ca. 55.4 Ma, it represents the oldest member of an extant genus of the family Dytiscidae. However, the presence of Rhantus in the early Eocene is only slightly older than previous estimates, and generally agrees well with phylogenetic analyses of the subfamily Colymbetinae. The presence of a predominantly temperate genus in the presumably warm Lagerstätte is briefly discussed, supporting the hypothesis of temporary cooling, as suggested by several other invertebrate records from the Fur Formation. It is suggested that the new species could feed on mosquito larvae, which are known from the Lagerstätte. Finally, a record of another Dytiscidae species from the same locality is mentioned, but, due to poor preservation and lack of diagnostic characters, this fossil remains unidentified to genus or species level.
Stephanopachys ambericus Zahradník & Háva, 2015 from the subfamily Dinoderinae is recorded from Eocene Danish amber and Baltic amber from Latvia for the first time. Diagnosis of this species is made, and illustrations are given. Fossil records of auger beetles are discussed.
A new species of chthonioid pseudoscorpion is described from Eocene Rovno amber (Ukraine), including a detailed diagnosis and illustrations: Chthonius marusiki sp. nov. (Arachnida, Pseudoscorpiones) is the first valid species of the family Chthoniidae from Rovno amber. Diagnostic, biogeographic, paleohabitat and ecological features of this new species are presented and discussed, and are compared to the related extinct and extant species of this genus.
Thallisellites augustinusii Lyubarsky et Perkovsky sp. nov. (Erotylidae: Languriinae, Thallisellini) is described from the late Eocene Baltic amber. Extant species of the tribe Thallisellini are Neotropical. New species differs from Thallisellites olgae in the slightly developed anterolateral angles of the pronotum; pronotal maximum width in anterior angles; short antennae, and the absence of the pronotal basal short longitudinal keel.
Ceratonotha danica gen. nov., sp. nov., a new genus and species of Erotylidae (Coleoptera), is described and illustrated from Eocene Danish amber. Ceratonotha is morphologically similar to fossil erotylids from European amber, differing from them mainly in the length of the 4th tarsomere. Cycadophila mumia Alekseev & Bukejs, 2017, described from Baltic amber, belongs in this new genus and is here transferred, becoming Ceratonotha mumia (Alekseev & Bukejs) comb. nov..
The fossil representatives of the family Resinacaridae (Acari: Heterostigmata) from the Late Eocene Rovno amber are reviewed. Three new species are described in the genus Resinacarus Vitzthum, namely, R. longipilis sp. nov., R. vitzthumi sp. nov., and R. striatus sp. nov. A new genus and species, Pararesinacarus krczali gen. and sp. nov. are also described. The extant species Pararesinacarus aradii (Krczal) comb. nov. was moved from Resinacarus. All active stages of the extant type species of the genus Resinacarus, R. resinatus Vitzthum, are redescribed based on type material. A key to genera and species of Resinacaridae is also provided.
Atomaria saxonica Lyubarsky et Perkovsky, 2018, a first cryptophagid species from Bitterfeld amber, is redescribed after its discovery in Rovno amber. European amber cryptophagids are listed. Cryptophagids (18 species) are the most diverse group of mycophagous beetles in European amber.
