The author has examined ATP-induced isometric tension in glycerol-extracted muscle fibers from the cat, rabbit, and chicken. Before the treatment with glycerol, the protein composition of the muscle tissue was determined so that the part of the myofilaments in the fiber area could be calculated. The isometric tension was measured in a Ranney myograph. The rabbit fibers gave tension values of 137 ± 9 g/mm2 myofilament cross-sectional area, the cat fibers 128 ± 9 g/mm2, while the chicken fibers proved to be less suitable for the experiment because of difficulties in the preparation.
Isometric tension in tetanically stimulated calf muscles was examined in vivo in 3 rabbits and 18 cats. In two cats the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles were studied separately. After determination of the isometric tension the muscles were dissected and their water content, total N content, and protein composition were analyzed. On this basis it was possible to calculate that part of the cross-sectional area of the muscle fibers which consisted of myofilaments. The recorded maximum isometric tension was related to the myofilamental cross-sectional area. Under the given experimental conditions, the calf muscles developed a tension of 108 ± 5 g/mm2 cross-sectional area. Higher values resulted from tests of individual calf muscles than from combined muscles.
The removal of injected C14-labelled histamine from the blood in various tissues has been studied in man. An intravenous infusion of C14-histamine was given at a constant rate until a steady state had been obtained and samples of arterial blood taken simultaneously with samples of blood from the pulmonary artery, the hepatic, renal, internal, jugular. iliac or axillary veins.The largest extraction of C14-histamine from the arterial blood occurred in the renal and the portal circulation.There was no measurable extraction of C14-histamine from the blood during its passage through the lungs or the brain.

The authors have carried out 2017 cadmium tests, according toWuhrmann andWunderly, on 827 patients suffering from various internal diseases. A great number of patients suffering from serious diseases showed negative cadmium tets. There was no correlation between the tests and body temperature, ESR or leucocyte count. In a group of 210 patients the test was compared with the results of paper electrophoroseis. There was no indication that an increase of the α and/or the γ-globulin proteins in combination with normal or decresed albumin content and a normal or decreased β-globulin content results in a positive cadmium reaction. A comparison between the thymol flocculation test and the cadmium test on 298 patients revealed no correlation between the two tests.
