The analysis is based on 2-jet hadronic Z decays obtained in the data collected between 1991 and 1992. Three separate event samples are analysed, contain ing electrons, muons and large missing energy (neutrinos), respectively. From the electron sample, we measure Br(b —> ez/X) (10.89±0.20=b0.51)% and, from the muon sam ple, Br(b —► ¡jl vX ) = (10.82±0.15±0.59)%, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We present evidence for soft gluon interference, as required by QCD. This interference is expected to manifest itself in an angular ordering of the gluons radiated within a jet. Using hadronic decays of the Z boson in the L3 detector at LEP, we compare variables sensitive to such an angular ordering, namely the energy-energy correlation asymmetry and the newly introduced particle-particle correlation asymmetry, with the predictions of various parton shower models. Only those models which incorporate the expected interference agree with the data.
The (K-stopped, pi0) strangeness and charge changing reaction was investigated by producing a 12Blambda hypernucleus from a carbon target. The branching ratio for K- capture to the ground and p-shell states of this hypernucleus was found to be (0.28 +- 0.08)x10-3 and (0.35 +- 0.09)x10-3, respectively, which after correction for isospin was lower than a previously measured value for the 12C(K-stopped, pi-)12Clambda reaction, but still above the theoretical predictions for the ground state. The experiment obtained a missing-mass resolution comparable to in-flight reactions, however the higher background and lower selectivity of the K-stopped reaction limits its usefulness in experimental study of the 12C(K-stopped, pi0)12Blambda reaction.

In the latest hg38 human genome assembly, centromeric gaps has been filled in by alpha satellite (AS) reference models (RMs) which are statistical representations of homogeneous higher-order repeat (HOR) arrays that make up the bulk of the centromeric regions. We analyzed these models to compose an atlas of human AS HORs where each monomer of a HOR was represented by a number of its polymorphic sequence variants. We combined these data and HMMER sequence analysis platform to annotate AS HORs in the assembly. This led to discovery of a new type of low copy number highly divergent HORs which were not represented by RMs. These were included in the dataset. The annotation can be viewed as UCSC Genome Browser custom track (the HOR-track) and used together with our previous annotation of AS suprachromosomal families (SFs) in the same assembly, where each AS monomer can be viewed in its genomic context together with its classification into one of the 5 major SFs (the SF-track). To catalog the diversity of AS HORs in the human genome we introduced a new naming system. Each HOR received a name which showed its SF, chromosomal location and index number. Here we present the first installment of the HOR-track covering only the 17 HORs that belong to SF1 which forms live functional centromeres in chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 16 and 19 and also a large number of minor dead HOR domains, both homogeneous and divergent. Monomer-by-monomer HOR annotation used for this dataset as opposed to annotation of whole HOR repeats provides for mapping and quantification of various structural variants of AS HORs which can be used to collect data on inter-individual polymorphism of AS.
The design, construction, and performance of a segmented-target, cathode-strip, tracking-detector is discussed. The chamber was made of low-Z materials in order to allow photons to leave the target region. It was used to determine the reaction vertex of stopping kaons, and was successfully operated in a high-intensity kaon beamline at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The vertical and horizontal resolutions of the stopping kaon reaction positions were σX∼0.454mm and σY∼1.180mm, respectively. The uncertainty in the longitudinal (Z) direction is given by one-half the thickness of a target segment.
Using the data collected with the L3 detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 149 pb(-1), the tau longitudinal polarisation has been measured as a function of the production polar angle using the tau decays tau(-) --> h(-)nu(tau) (h = pi,rho,a(1)) and tau(-)-->l(-)<(nu)over bar>(l)nu(tau) (l = e,mu). From this measurement the quantities A(c) and A(tau), which depend on the couplings of the electron and the tau to the Z, are determined to be A(c) = 0.1678 +/- 0.0127 +/- 0.0030 and A(tau) = 0.1476 +/- 0.0088 +/- 0.0062, consistent with the hypothesis of e-tau universality, Under this assumption a value of A(l) = 0.1540 +/- 0.0074 +/- 0.0044 is obtained, yielding the value of the effective weak mixing angle sin(2)<(theta)over bar>(W) = 0.2306 +/- 0.0011. We analyse e(+)e(-) --> tau tau gamma events using 100 pb(-1) of data collected by the L3 experiment during the 1991-1995 LEP runs at the Z pole. From the energy of the photons and their isolation from the tau decay products, we determine the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau to be, respectively:a(tau) = 0.004 +/- 0.027 +/- 0.023;d(tau) = (0.0 +/- 1.5 +/- 1.3) x 10(16) e.cm.This is a direct measurement of these tau form factors at q(2) = 0. The reactions e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) and e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-), in a single tag configuration, are studied at LEP with the L3 detector. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 93.7 pb(-1) at root s = 91 GeV. Differential cross sections are measured for 1.4 GeV2 less than or equal to Q(2) less than or equal to 7.6 GeV2. The leptonic photon structure function F-2(gamma) and azimuthal correlations are measured for e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-). The related structure functions F-A(gamma) and F-B(gamma), which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes, are determined for the first time. Time-dependent B-0-(B) over bar(0) mixing is studied using about two million hadronic Z decays registered by L3 in 1994 and 1995. For this study three techniques are used. Tagging of the b-quark charge at decay time is performed by identifying leptons from semileptonic B decays. The flavour of the b quark at production time is determined from the charge of the lepton in the opposite hemisphere or by using a jet-charge technique. The proper time of the B-particle decay is obtained by reconstructing the production and decay vertices or by a measurement of the lepton impact parameter. The combined result for the frequency of B-d(0) meson oscillations isDelta m(d) = 0.444 +/- 0.040 ps(-1).
An upper limit on the lifetime difference of short- and long-lived B-s(0) masons has been obtained using an inclusive bottom hadron sample from 2 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP. A lifetime fit has been performed on data samples separately enriched in neutral and charged b hadrons. An experimental upper limit on the decay rate difference of short- and long-lived B-s(0) masons of (\Delta Gamma\/Gamma)(Bs0) < 0.67 (95% C.L.) has been determined. In addition, the lifetimes of B + and B-d(0) mesons have been measured to be tau(B+) = 1.66 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.03 ps and tau(B-d(0)) = 1.52 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.04 ps, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. A measurement of the inclusive charmless semileptonic branching fraction of beauty hadrons, b --> X-u l nu, has been performed using almost two million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP, yielding the result: Br(b --> X-u l nu) = (3.3 +/- 1.0 +/- 1.7) x 10(-3). The first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V-ub extracted from this measurement is: \V-ub\ = (6.0(-1.0-1.9)(+0.8+1.4) +/- 0.2) x 10(-3), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and theoretical, respectively. The formation of the eta' in the reaction e(+)e(-)-->e(+)e(-)eta'-->e(+)e(-)pi(+)pi(-)gamma has been measured by the L3 detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 91 GeV. The radiative width of the eta' has been found to be Gamma(gamma gamma)=4.17+/-0.10(stat.)+/-0.27(sys.)keV. The Q(2) dependence of the eta' formation cross section has been measured for Q(2) less than or equal to 10 GeV2 and the eta' electromagnetic transition form factor has been determined. The form factor can be parametrised by a pole form with Lambda=0.900+/-0.046(stat.)+/-0.022(sys.)GeV. It is also consistent with recent non-perturbative QCD calculations. The coupling of the Z boson to quarks is studied in a sample of about 3.5 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 to 1995. The forward-backward quark charge asymmetry is measured by means of a jet charge technique. From the measured asymmetries, the effective weak mixing angle is determined to be sin(2)<(theta)over bar>(w) = 0.2327 +/- 0.0012(stat,) +/- 0.0013(syst.). (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
