Surgical/percutaneous islet cell transplantation has demonstrated limited success in achieving exogenous insulin freedom for T1DM patients and requires chronic toxic systemic immunosuppression. Immunoisolation methods using biologic macroencapsulation and preserving semi-permeable characteristics have been well-validated. An endovascular solution using an immunoisolated stent would protect islet cells and obviate the need for systemic immunosuppression. The purpose of this study is to create an islet cell containing immunoisolated stent graft and assess endocrine function of the encapsulated islet cells.
