This report presents the activities carried out at the Victor Meirelles Museum (MVM) through the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Brazilian Institute of Museums (Ibram) and the Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ). In December 2023, researchers from the Applied Scientific Instrumentation and Computational Simulation Laboratory (LISComp/IFRJ) were at the MVM performing physicochemical analysis on five works by Victor Meirelles. The techniques applied were X-Ray Fluorescence Macro Mapping (MA-XRF), Energy Dispersion X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The analyzes will allow the characterization of the composition materials of the paintings, as well as the curative conservation and restoration interventions carried out over time, thus contributing to the qualification of the musealization process.
In November 2019, the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the Federal University of Bahia (MAE/UFBA) received a visit from researchers Kanawayuri L. Marcello Kamayura, Auakamu Kamayura and Kaluyawa Kamayura, who came to the Museum to discover the collection of their people formed by the anthropologist Pedro Agostinho da Silva in the 1960s, and the processes of musealization of these objects. The technical visit was carried out in the context of the Kamayura Archive project, which aims retrieving information about the material culture of this people, which is currently found in museums and universities. The preparation of the MAE/UFBA team for the visit involved a series of activities aimed at deepening knowledge about the Kamayura people and about the Pedro Agostinho collection: Internal training on "Material Culture from Alto Xingu", the elaboration of "The Guide for the Documentation of the Ethnographic Collections of MAE/UFBA (1983-1999)" and the research for the biography of the collection, presented in the "Timeline of the Pedro Agostinho Collection".
The Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at the Federal University of Bahia (MAE / UFBA) has an intrinsic relationship with Valentin Calderon. In addition to his idealizing the Museum, MAE / UFBA safeguards two collections related to the researcher: the Valentin Calderon collection, made up of archaeological and personal objects, and his personal archive. In this context, the objective of this article is to discuss the potential of personal archives in museums, focusing on the construction of researchers' biographies as a subsidy for the preparation of collections biographies and their preservation. For this, we present and discuss the idea of biography through the ethnography of science and identify the potential and possibilities of doing biography in the musealization of Valentin Calderon's personal archive. From the analysis, we understand that the biographical making is configured as a tool with great potential for the musealization of Calderon's personal archive and archaeological collection, offering new possibilities for the interpretation of these collections and providing data for their documentation, conservation and communication.
This article aims to identify and analyze the heritage documents and related legislation referring to indigenous cultural heritage, emphasizing the way in which these instruments have been approaching the preservation of ethnographic collections and, more recently, the shared stewardship with indigenous peoples. For this purpose, documents produced at the national and international levels were consulted, and those with the traditional, ethnological, ethnographic and/or indigenous terms were selected. A total of 16 documents were identified and analyzed, including heritage charters, declarations, recommendations, policies and legislation. Through the analysis, it was possible to verify the transformations that occurred in the scope of the valorization of the indigenous ethnographic collections, from their recognition as heritage to be preserved until the current moment of indication of the shared stewardship with the groups.
