Big data analytics are pervasive in data-intensive systems and applications using machine learning and deep learning. IoT sensor devices are generating all types of big data, including structured (e.g., tables) and unstructured data (e.g., text and image), which are beyond the processing power of humans. However, how to conduct big data analysis on IoT data without compromising IoT privacy is still an open problem. IoT shall leverage powerful learning techniques to automatically learn patterns such as similarities, correlations and abnormalities from big sensing data in a privacy-preserving manner. To make this happen, we first examine distributed learning techniques that are suitable for IoT architectures. We then propose a privacy-preserving distributed learning framework with a novel dynamic deep learning mechanism to extract patterns and learn knowledge from IoT data. Simulations are performed to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our solution.
Massive amount of queries with location data from mobile sensors, connected vehicles, and IoT devices make the Location-Based Services (LBS) pervasive. LBS service providers can provide valuable services for mobile users ranging from POI (Point-Of-Interest) discovery to local search, etc. However, user personal privacy issues mainly come from the fact that users need to send their coordinates and query interests or features to the service provider which may compromise their privacy. In this paper, we focus on a new user privacy problem from a historical query point of view, and consider query search features as new tools for attackers to possibly locate users in a specific location and/or region. We introduce a new query-feature-based inference attack with an illustration on a real-world data set. We define Indistinguishable Feature-Inferred Location/Grids and Probabilistic k-Effectiveness to provide a strong property with differential privacy mannered guarantee. To achieve the privacy property, we design novel randomized algorithms to countermeasure the privacy attack. Based on entropy and recourse cost related metrics, simulations and analysis are performed to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approaches.
Multiple sensors with different functions on sensor-enabled devices on a mobile vehicle are generating large amount of data in real time which consists of a vehicular user's instant context. Context-aware services and applications utilize users' contexts to provide personalized services in return. However, most of the context-aware applications are selfish and very curious of users' sensitive information. In this work, we propose a framework for privacy preserving mobile sensing by caching on mobile vehicles. The framework combines a context releasing component with sensitive data caching capability to achieve strong contextual privacy for mobile vehicles. The main strength of our approach is to improve the privacy level by data caching for sensitive contexts as well as the quality of query results. Finally, we conduct simulations to evaluate our framework for effectiveness and efficiency.
Recent advances in mobile device, wireless networking, and positional technologies have helped location-aware applications become pervasive. However, location trajectory privacy concerns hinder the adoptability of such applications. In this article, we survey existing trajectory privacy work in the context of wireless sensor networks, location-based services, and geosocial networks. In each context, we categorize and summarize the main techniques according to their own feathers. Furthermore, we discuss future trajectory privacy research challenges and directions.
The popularity of location-aware mobile devices and the advances of wireless networking have seriously pushed location-based services into the IT market. However, moving users need to report their coordinates to an application service provider to utilize interested services that may compromise user privacy. In this paper, we propose an online personalized scheme for generating anonymity zones to protect users with mobile devices while on the move. We also introduce a strong adversary model, which can conduct inference attacks in the system. Our design combines a geometric transformation algorithm with a dynamic pseudonyms-changing mechanism and user-controlled personalized dummy generation to achieve strong trajectory privacy preservation. Our proposal does not involve any trusted third-party and will not affect the existing LBS system architecture. Simulations are performed to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.
Polymerization of 2,5-diformylfuran with two primary amines was carried out in acetonitrile and ethanol at room temperature. The reaction was characterized using a combination of mass spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy, which revealed the clean formation of the imine –CHN− functional group. Although some cyclic products were detected from mass spectroscopy, the ring size was limited to products that have the −CHN− group only in anti-geometry. The furan Schiff bases exhibit good thermal stability. While mass spectra evidenced oligomers of different lengths, cross-polarization magic angle spinning 13C NMR spectra of the insoluble polymer revealed the linear structure as proposed. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry
Hydroxyl-functionalized graphene (G–OH) was efficiently produced from exfoliation of graphite powder by ball milling the presence of potassium hydroxide (KOH). While the nanoscale graphene sheets were confirmed by various characterization techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy, the formation of hydroxyl groups in G–OH was revealed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis (NMR), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) measurements. The as-prepared G–OH showed strong hydrophilicity with good solubility in water, excellent electrochemical activity and no influence on the growth of human retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. More than 80% cell survival rate and less than 7% lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release were observed for RPE cells treated with G–OH, indicating excellent biocompatibility.
Polymer thin films offer a versatile and ubiquitous platform for a wide variety of real-world applications in biomedicine, nanotechnology, catalysis, photovoltaic devices, and energy conversion and storage. Depending on the chemical composition of the polymers and the associated microenvironment, the physicochemical properties (biocompatibility, stability, wettability, adhesion, morphology, surface free energy, and others) of polymer films can be tuned for a specific application through precisely controlled surface synthesis and the incorporation of desirable and responsive functional groups. In this short review, we first summarise the methods most commonly used for the fabrication of polymer thin films. Then we discuss how these polymer thin films can be used in a selection of biomedical applications in antifouling materials and biosensors. Some directions for the rational design of polymer thin films to achieve a specific function or application are also provided.

Fe(2+) cations in FeCl(2) or FeSO(4) were oxidized by graphene oxide, leading to an in situ deposition of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles onto the self-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets.
