This article explores the production of knowledge on doping and anti-doping through the lens of the sociology of science, focusing on themes such as epistemic communities and the cumulativity of knowledge. Using a corpus of 177 scientific papers authored by 211 researchers, we examine what sociology reveals-and overlooks doping and anti-doping, identifying existing knowledge gaps and areas for further exploration. Our inquiry refines key questions: can researchers in this field be considered part of an epistemic community with shared beliefs and practices? Additionally, does knowledge produced in this domain accumulate over time? Findings highlight the fragmented nature of sociological contributions, with limited theoretical coherence, significant compartmentalization of approaches, and regional disparities concentrated in Northern Europe and North America. Clusters of researchers with shared topics and methodologies exist, but evidence of cumulative knowledge across subfields remains scarce. To address these challenges, we advocate the creation of an anti-doping observatory to catalog research, foster collaboration, and align academic contributions with institutional needs. This initiative aims to enhance both the sociology of science and the impact of anti-doping efforts.
'Compliance' is an instrument used by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for national agencies to adhere to the requirements of the captor. Based on pragmatic sociology, we describe the actions of actors working on 'compliance' at the Brazilian Anti-Doping Agency (ABCD), in view of the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, and the development of an 'anti-doping culture.' Using multi-situated ethnography, we describe the work of mediators that transform, translate, distort and modify their interests. As sources of controversies, we chose ABCD's creation and operation; the approval of the Brazilian Anti-Doping Code; and the establishment and operation of the Anti-Doping Sports Justice. ABCD's social work in achieving 'compliance' reflects a process of translation to stabilize this national anti-doping community led by a state agency and, therefore, in the making of a Public Policy.
•Theoretical resources are rare and not varied in the sociological literature on anti-doping.•Using diverse sociological approaches and models, drawn up outside the epistemic community of researchers working on doping, can help elucidate the doping issue.•Taking into account the complexity of doping in research programmes could allow researchers to grasp local and global transformations in the system and their articulations.•Sociology of work helped us identify five different ways of “doing prevention”, to which institutions were differently committed.•A research focusing on WADA/NADOs’ procedures-based management identified possible related risks: e.g. loss of pleasure in working, emergence of fear or increasing pressure.
The fight against doping evolves constantly. While we are writing this paper, institutions are working to implement the 2021 version of the World Anti-Doping Code. However, the process of reflection on the application of a particular measure included in the 2015 Code has not yet been taken very far. We refer to the invitation to become a «lanceur d’alerte” (in French) or “whistleblower” (in English), that is, to “report” any suspicious practice. But these terms are not synonymous. Beyond a question of translation, the history of these two notions shows very different cultures and practices. We propose to clarify them before discussing the consequences of this tension on anti-doping practices and on this chimera that is harmonization.
The text sets out to examine so-called "interdisciplinary" research practices when researchers work on health issues. The article specifies the author's approach, which departs from both a normative posture and a purely epistemological approach, instead opting to study an interdisciplinary act in progress. Based on an ANR report led by Trabal, Collinet and Terral (2014), the research presented mobilizes the latest developments in socio-informatics to examine forms of interdisciplinarity in two areas - doping and obesity. It appears that the research on doping is marked by strong asymmetries between disciplines, and that "true" interdisciplinarity is often postponed when it does not seem to lend itself to a simple mode of coordination. In the case of obesity, we observe that practices are marked by staging and display work; the demand for interdisciplinarity is combined with a desire to structure a professional identity. In all cases, we were able to identify some trails that have been blazed to enable researchers to respond jointly to disciplinary and interdisciplinary injunctions. The promise is an interesting figure that relies on a postponement of proof, made possible by weak codification of interdisciplinarity. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
The issue of doping in sport questions ways of designing comparative research. On the one hand, because the social practices the institutions try to fight are often the fruits of both international networks and local conditions. On the other hand, because the harmonization policy pursued by the World Anti-Doping Agency is being built on the basis of alignments with international standards. Finally, these policies evaluation processes are sometimes self-referenced and are based on the production of opaque indicators. This article proposes an alternative by building-up corpus of texts in several languages upon which international comparisons can be made. One of their development goals would be to understand the interconnection conditions between an internationalization process and local realities as well as the functioning of heterogeneous institutions.
