Although the safety benefits of mindful organizing have been empirically examined, we still know little about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying the relationship between mindful organizing and safety violations. Empirical data were collected using a questionnaire administered to 408 Chinese construction workers and were analyzed using structural equation modeling and hierarchical linear regression. The results indicated that mindful organizing influenced safety violations indirectly through both safety moral disengagement (-0.25 and p<0.001) and illegitimate task perception (-0.03 and p<0.05). Furthermore, the effects of mindful organizing on safety violations are moderated by project identification. The findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge by offering a deep understanding of how and when mindful organizing promotes construction safety performance. In practice, this research will enable construction managers to develop appropriate strategies to promote mindful organizing practices for fostering safety behaviors in construction workers.
This study examines methods to improve predictive accuracy and interpretability of residential building energy consumption (RBEC) prediction, aiming to support energy retrofitting, demand response, and sustainable energy management that reduce environmental impacts. This study proposes a Bayesian-optimized hybrid Convolutional Neural Network and Long Short-Term Memory (BO-CNN-LSTM) that fuses static household/building attributes with temporal climate signals and is integrated with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for feature-level interpretability. Results demonstrate that the proposed BO-CNN-LSTM achieves an overall R2 of 0.884 on the test set, outperforming CNN (0.672), LSTM (0.738), and unoptimized CNN-LSTM (0.812). It also exhibits lower MAE and RMSE, with a slower R2 degradation in both seasonal-window and cross-seasonal forecasting, confirming its short-term precision and long-term stability. Compared with tree-based baselines such as XGBoost and LightGBM, the BO-CNN-LSTM delivers superior predictive accuracy, whereas conventional models typically achieve R2 between 0.6 and 0.8. Furthermore, the SHAP analysis identifies gas heating, building area, monthly heating degree days, heating equipment control systems, building age, and number of minors as key determinants of RBEC. Dependence and interaction plots reveal crucial conditional effects, providing actionable insights for scenario-oriented retrofit prioritization and operation strategies. Overall, the integration of Bayesian optimization, hybrid deep learning, and SHAP analyses enhances both the accuracy and interpretability of RBEC prediction. Furthermore, the findings contribute to explainable AI for energy systems, support urban policy, and supply transferable prediction workflows for digital-twin and Life Cycle Assessment applications.
PurposeThis study examines how social interaction and emotional states shape residents' behavioral decision-making regarding energy-efficiency retrofit (EER) of existing residential buildings, aiming to promote EER acceptance and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.Design/methodology/approachA multi-agent simulation model grounded in social interaction theory and overreaction theory was developed to analyze residents' EER decision-making. The model integrates residents' self-assessment, social interaction and emotional states, capturing their dynamic evolution over time. Behavioral evolution was further illustrated through the analysis of fluctuation patterns in simulation curves.FindingsSocial interaction significantly enhances EER acceptance by strengthening observational learning and demonstration effects. However, high network connectivity and strong emotional sensitivity can amplify short-term fluctuations, exhibiting a "double-edged sword" effect. Costs of EER implementation and maintenance exert the strongest influence on residents' decisions, whereas visible and immediate government subsidies effectively trigger short-term participation. In contrast, indirect benefits, such as house appreciation and environmental benefits, exert comparatively limited impact under the model's baseline parameterization.Originality/valueThis study provides a novel analytical framework by integrating social interaction and emotional states into the analysis of residents' EER behaviors. It addresses a gap in existing research, which often neglects the psychological and social dimensions of behavioral decision-making in energy efficiency contexts. The findings offer actionable insights for designing effective policies to foster EER acceptance, emphasizing the importance of social networks and emotional dynamics in shaping collective behaviors.
Construction workers are often subjected to strenuous manual labor, poor working conditions, and prolonged separation from family, leading to psychological symptoms such as stress, depression, and anxiety. These psychological factors, combined with safety climate elements like risk perception and safety attitude, significantly influence workers’ safety behaviors, including risk-taking, safety compliance, and safety participation. To address these issues, this study investigates the interplay between psychological symptoms, safety climate, and safety behaviors among construction workers in Mainland China. Data were collected through a survey of 160 construction workers, with results analyzed using correlation and regression techniques. The findings reveal that: (1) risky behavior is primarily driven by anxiety and risk perception; (2) safety participation is influenced by safety attitudes and levels of depression; and (3) safety compliance is affected by risk perception, safety attitude, stress, and depression. Interestingly, an inverse relationship is observed between depression and both risky behavior and safety compliance. These results underscore the importance of addressing psychological well-being to improve safety outcomes. Practical implications include providing psychological counseling, stress management training, and improving social connections for workers, such as facilitating regular video calls with family members or offering travel reimbursements.
Introduction Decision-making failure is a critical factor influencing workers’ unsafe behavior. While previous research has predominantly concentrated on rational decision-making failures, it has largely ignored the impact of irrational decision-making failures and the mechanisms through which these failures contribute to unsafe behaviors. This oversight limits our understanding of how unsafe behavior develops. Utilizing dual-process theory and the prototype willingness model, this study distinguishes between two types of decision-making failures: unsafe behavioral intention (reflecting rational decision-making failure) and unsafe behavioral willingness (reflecting irrational decision-making failure). We examined how these failures influence workers’ unsafe behavior and explored the moderating effects of conscientiousness and consideration of future consequences on these relationships. Method Data were gathered from 446 construction workers through a questionnaire survey. Structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Results The results revealed that: (1) both unsafe behavioral intention and unsafe behavioral willingness significantly and positively affected workers’ unsafe behavior; (2) unsafe behavioral intention mediated the relationship between unsafe behavioral willingness and unsafe behavior; (3) conscientiousness negatively moderated the link between unsafe behavioral intention and unsafe behavior; and (4) the moderating effect of consideration of future consequences on the relationship between unsafe behavioral willingness and unsafe behavior was not supported. Practical Applications This study provides a comprehensive perspective on the relationship between decision-making failures and unsafe behavior, elucidates the underlying mechanisms, and offers targeted strategies for managing unsafe behaviors.
Emerging information and construction management technology (EICMT) has become prevailing in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry to achieve digital transformation by applying emerging information technologies (i.e., Internet of things, cloud computing, and mobile Internet) in construction management works (i.e., cost management, stakeholder management, on-site construction management, etc.). This study aims to test the relations between organizational elements and building professional EICMT implementation and explore its practical path by identifying the mediators and moderators. 507 valid responses were obtained using the questionnaire online. Mplus 8.0, a statistical analysis software that prevails in handling complex models, is used for path analysis and bootstrapping tests in this study. Path analyses are conducted to test the relations between organizational elements and EICMT implementation. Bootstrapping tests are used to identify the mediator and moderator. The finding reveals that corporate normative pressure and technology facilitating conditions can directly affect building professional EICMT implementation; the mediating role of perceived ease of use is verified between technology facilitating condition and building professional EICMT implementation, and the moderating effect of top management support is confirmed by remodeling the relations between organizational elements and EICMT implementation, which provides a boundary condition for the building professionals' EICMT implementation. Our study extends the relations between organizational elements and building professional EICMT implementation by exploring the mediator role of perceived ease of use and moderator of top management support. The findings from this study can enrich the research on the antecedents of EICMT implementation in the AEC industry. Moreover, this study provides guidelines for practitioners to formulate corporate norms, foster corporate culture, and provide technology facilitating conditions to promote EICMT implementation. It also requires top management to engage in digital transformation in the AEC industry. Emerging information and construction management technology (EICMT) is applied to improve project management efficiency in the AEC industry. Construction enterprises make several efforts to encourage their building professionals to implement EICMT, such as formal norms and informal culture, but the implementation of EICMT is contentious in practice. This study recommends that corporate normative pressure, technology-facilitating conditions, and top management support are crucial for the EICMT implementation in building professionals. Besides, building professionals prefer to select technologies that are easy to use rather than practical. Therefore, construction enterprises should formulate formal norms related to EICMT implementation to evaluate building professionals' job performance, which can urge employees to apply EICMT in their daily work and also provide rewards for these employees who use EICMT in their jobs and improve work outcomes. Moreover, construction enterprises can provide convenient conditions on EICMT to encourage building professionals to accept EICMT, such as training, operation manuals, and professional guidance. Construction enterprises' top managers should actively participate in EICMT promotion by implementing EICMT in daily work, communicating EICMT with their employees, and recognizing its benefits.
PurposeJob stressors have a considerable influence on workplace safety behaviors. However, the findings from previous studies regarding the effect of different types of job stressors have been contradictory. This is attributable to, among other factors, the effectiveness of job stressors varying with occupations and contexts. This study examines the effects of challenge and hindrance stressors on construction workers' informal safety communication at different levels of coworker relationships.Design/methodology/approachA three-dimensional framework of informal safety communication is adopted, including self-needed, citizenship and participatory safety communication. Stepwise regression analysis is then performed using questionnaire survey data collected from 293 construction workers in the Chinese construction industry.FindingsThe results demonstrate that both challenge and hindrance stressors are negatively associated with self-needed and citizenship safety communication, whereas their relationships with participatory safety communication are not significant. Meanwhile, the mitigation effects of the coworker relationship (represented by trustworthiness and accessibility) on the above negative impacts vary with the communication forms. Higher trustworthiness and accessibility enable workers faced with challenge stressors to actively manage these challenges and engage in self-needed safety communication. Similarly, trustworthiness promotes workers' involvement in self-needed and citizenship safety communication in the face of hindrance stressors, but accessibility is only effective in facilitating self-needed safety communication.Originality/valueBy introducing the job demands-resources theory and distinguishing informal safety communication into three categories, this study explains the negative effects of challenge and hindrance job stressors in complex and variable construction contexts and provides additional clues to the current inconsistent findings regarding this framework. The diverse roles of challenge and hindrance job stressors also present strong evidence for the need to differentiate between the types of informal safe communication.
Due to the industrialization of the construction sector, enterprises that manufacture prefabricated components are developing rapidly. Because the production capacity of each enterprise varies immensely, the upstream enterprises are unable to match the component manufacturing enterprises that are suitable for the supply target. With respect to the product capacity, scientific and accurate evaluations are crucial. The authors preliminarily determined factors that impact the production capacity of components and considered a literature review and the inspection results of component manufacturing enterprises. By performing a thorough investigation and analysis, they constructed the index system for evaluating the production capacity of enterprises that manufacture prefabricated components, and each index was interpreted. To determine the weight of the evaluation index, an analytic hierarchy process was utilized; furthermore, the characteristics of each grade were described, and a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model was built. Moreover, to empirically analyze the built model, the authors selected a construction company and analyzed 127 questionnaires filled in by employees at all the organizational levels related to PCT production and to 34 evaluation results of experts from standard quota research institutions in various provinces. The results of the two methods revealed the following: This enterprise level is the "Reinforcement level" (level 3). The evaluation results are consistent with the empirical results of the model established herein, which verifies its feasibility.
Although leader-focused interventions to improve safety performances on construction sites have been widely proposed and discussed, the mechanism linking informal safety communication between leaders and workers is poorly known. This research developed and tested a theoretical model regarding the effects of leader-member exchange on the informal safety communication of construction workers, focusing on the cognitive psychology perspective. Psychological and cognitive factors were examined as mediators in this research. Meanwhile, empirical data were collected from 333 construction workers in China using a detailed questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was implemented to analyze the data using commercially available software. The results showed that frequent exchanges with frontline supervisors could make workers more willing to communicate safety issues with coworkers. There were differences in how supervisors activated the three types of safety communication. The psychological contract of safety had more substantial mediating effects on the relationship between leader-member exchange and the self-needed safety communication of workers. In contrast, psychological safety was more related to citizenship safety communication than participatory safety communication. These results enrich the theoretical knowledge of leader-worker research and provide practical insights for promoting worker interactions beneficial to safety performance onsite.
PurposeThis study aims to develop an improved understanding of the formation of citizens' purchase intention to increase the adoption of prefabricated housing (PH).Design/methodology/approachAn integrative model of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and norm activation model (NAM) was proposed based on previous studies. To verify the conceptual model, an analysis was conducted after data collection from a questionnaire survey. Lastly, findings were presented by explaining the formation of purchase intention in the egoistic and altruistic contexts. Practical implications were likewise discussed.FindingsFindings manifest that citizens' purchase intention is influenced by egoistic and altruistic cognitions. An effective strategy is to show citizens the pro-environmental features of PH to promote its adoption because they value the environmental performance of housing. Meanwhile, consumers' social fitness also plays an essential role in decision-making, and the dual contradiction in the PH market is revealed.Originality/valueThis study extends the knowledge of psychological decision-making theories in the field of purchase intention toward PH by proposing an integrative framework of TPB and NAM. Results indicate a systematic and comprehensive understanding of consumers' decision-making in the PH domain. Moreover, results of this research contribute to specifying and refining the applicable contexts of TPB and NAM by adding two antecedents: subjective knowledge and environmental concern. This research contributes to the literature by being one of the first to investigate purchase intention toward a high-cost product with invisible technological innovation.
Despite the prevalence of unsafe behaviors on construction sites, limited attention has been paid to why and when some individuals on construction crews imitate their coworkers' unsafe behaviors. This research proposes a theoretical model wherein coworkers' unsafe behaviors are transmitted to other individuals through two pathways: safety silence and role stress, which includes role conflict and role ambiguity. Furthermore, the psychological contract of safety acts as a boundary condition. Empirical data were collected using a questionnaire administered to 498 Chinese construction workers and were analyzed using structural equation modeling and hierarchical linear regression. The results indicated that individuals were more prone to violate safety rules when witnessing coworkers' unsafe behaviors. These behaviors indirectly affected individuals through safety silence and role conflict. The psychological contract of safety could mitigate the adverse effect of coworkers' unsafe behaviors on individual safety violations and role stress. The findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge by offering a deep understanding of construction workers' responses toward unsafe behaviors. Practically, this research will assist managers in developing appropriate strategies for preventing the spread of unsafe behaviors within construction crews.
Existing studies have highlighted the importance of informal safety communication among workers at construction sites. However, there is still a lack of empirically tested theoretical models with valid and reliable scales for describing and measuring construction workers’ informal safety communication (CWISC). Accordingly, this study aimed to fill this need by developing an instrument to assess the communication performance of construction workers. Four stages of scale development were described: construct formation, item generation, factor extraction through the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 219), and scale assessment through the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 156). Using questionnaire data drawn from construction workers in China, the CWISC was verified to be a three-dimensional construct including citizenship safety communication (CSC), self-needed safety communication (SSC), and participatory safety communication (PSC). The corresponding CWISC scale with 12 items was shown to have acceptable internal consistency reliability, as well as content, convergent, and discriminant validity. The CWISC scale could serve as an instrument to assess and identify the weaknesses in informal safety communication performance of construction workers. In turn, this information could help supervisors implement appropriate management practices to those workers to enhance workplace informal safety communication. Related studies taking a multidimensional CWISC into account were expected to be carried out.
This study develops and tests an integrative model to better understand the mechanisms by which the leadermember exchange (LMX) determines workers’ safety behaviours. The modified theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was proposed by using attitudinal ambivalence to replace univalent safety attitude. Empirical data were collected from 229 construction workers in China using a detailed questionnaire. Both situational and routine safety violations were considered in this model. The results showed that LMX had significant effects on both types of safety violations through three mediators from the modified TPB framework. Specifically, attitudinal ambivalence and group safety norm mediated the relationships between LMX and both types workers’ safety violations. However, perceived behavioural control only mediated the relationship between LMX and individuals’ routine safety violations. Furthermore, this research supported the distinctions between situational and routine safety violations. The indirect effects of LMX on individuals’ situational safety violations took place mainly through group safety norm. By contrast, the indirect effects on individuals’ routine safety violations took place mainly through attitudinal ambivalence and perceived behavioural control. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications, research limitations, and future directions were discussed. The results provide some meaningful insights into how to improve safety compliance behaviours from the perspective of supervisor-worker relationships.

The incremental cost of passive residential construction and use is a crucial determining factor for developer's investment and consumers' purchasing decisions. According to the time of cost,the costs are divided into annual cycle cost and non-annual cycle cost. Based on the model of the life cycle cost of passive residential building, carbon emission metrics are added, the discount rate, the annual increase of each indicator,and the non-annual cost are considered. The net present value of incremental cost income for a passive house is calculated and accumulated,as well as its investment recovery period of the incremental cost;and the incremental cost-benefit is analyzed,providing decision-making reference for developers and consumers and promoting the development of passive residential scale.

The paper makes the government and developers as the game subjects firstly, analyzes the gains and losses of variables which influence the government and developers, and establishes the evolutionary game model between government and developers under the condition of bounded rationality by evolutionary game theory. Then solves the replication dynamic equations and determines the stability of the equilibrium Jacobi matrix, paints the phase diagram of evolutionary game. At last, analyzes their strategy choices affected by gains and losses variables, puts forward the countermeasures and suggestions for the government accordingly, and promotes the scale development of the passive residential construction.
The scale development of passive house is the inevitable trend of housing industry in the future. As one of the main way of providing,the implementation power of passive residential exploitation decides the size and quality of passive house. The paper makes the government,developers and consumers as the main subjects of the game,analyzes the profit and loss variables which influence the income of the government and developers,and establishes the evolutionary game model between government and developers based on the participation of consumers under the condition of bounded rationality by evolutionary game theory. Then the replication dynamic equations are solved and the stability of the equilibrium Jacobi matrix is determined. The evolution trend and the phase diagram of evolutionary game are plotted when the saddle point is in different positions. At last,their strategy choice affected by gains and losses variables is analysed. By confirming the effectiveness of the game model through the empirical analysis,the reference is provided for the government to develop incentive policy and the scale development of the passive house construction is promoted.
In recent years, along with the smart city concept, the smart city construction has been concerned at home and abroad. In order to measure the development level of the smart city, this paper constructs the smart city galaxy structure model and its evaluation system based on the connotation of the smart city and the influence factors of the smart urban development. The weight of each dimension is calculated by entropy method, then the evaluation system of galaxy structure model tries to be applicated with the instance. The main value of the model of the smart city galaxy structure and its evaluation system is to realize the operability of the concept of smart city, and to provide a useful reference for further promoting smart city development level.
The incremental cost in the construction and use of passive residence is an important determinant of developers' investment and consumers' purchasing decisions. In this paper, the costs are divided into annual cycle cost and non-annual cycle cost according to the cost occurrence time, the carbon emission measurement index is added based on the passive residential life cycle cost composition model, then calculate the passive residential incremental cost-benefit present value of the cumulative considering the discount rate, the increase range of index and the occurrence years of non-annual cost. The paper calculates the payback period of incremental cost of the passive residence and analyzes the incremental cost and benefit finally, which can provide reference for developers and consumers to promote the development of passive residential scale.
