Khairun University is an Indonesian public university in Ternate City, North Maluku. Named after a historical monarch of the Sultanate of Ternate, it was founded in 1964 initially as a partner of the Sam Ratulangi University in Manado. The university was nationalized in 2004, making it a state-operated institution. In 2016, the university claimed a student count of 1,120 with 115 teaching staff, over double of 550 in 2014. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In 2017, following the prohibition of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, the university demanded all its teaching staff affiliated with the organization to resign.
The interaction between humans and birds plays an important role in shaping the sustainability of tropical rainforest ecosystems, particularly through bird vocalizations that function as bioacoustic indicators of ecological conditions while simultaneously embedding socio-cultural meanings within local communities. This study aims to (1) classify types and categories of bird sounds as perceived by rural communities, and (2) assess the role of bird vocalizations as cultural symbols supporting community-based conservation practices. The study was conducted across six islands and eight villages in North Maluku, Eastern Indonesia, using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews and community workshops. A total of 435 respondents, all of whom were farmers residing along forest margins, participated in the study. The results documented 51 bird species belonging to 26 families, whose vocalizations were interpreted and classified by local communities into three acoustic categories: 21 species with loud calls (41.18%), 12 species with melodious calls (23.53%), and 18 species with sad calls (35.29%). Melodious vocalizations were commonly associated with values of beauty, calmness, and social harmony, whereas loud calls were predominantly interpreted as warnings, signals of alertness, or indicators of environmental change. These findings demonstrate that bird sounds serve not merely as ecological cues, but as culturally embedded symbols that guide daily activities, moral values, and conservation ethics within rural communities. By documenting the cultural significance of bird vocalizations across a clearly defined geographic context, this study provides an empirical basis for culturally informed conservation strategies aimed at protecting bird species subject to high levels of cultural use and ecological pressure.
Mercury ions (Hg²⁺) are highly toxic environmental pollutants requiring rapid and cost-effective detection methods. This study presents an eco-friendly approach for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous extracts of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), pineapple (Ananas comosus), and jambulang (Syzygium cumini), which serve as both reducing and stabilizing agents. The formation of AgNPs was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, exhibiting characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks around 400 nm, and TEM analysis, which revealed spherical morphology with diameters of 4–6 nm. The synthesized AgNPs were evaluated as colorimetric sensors for Hg²⁺ detection, based on the color change from yellow/brown to colorless due to the Ag-Hg amalgamation process and the subsequent quenching of the SPR peak. Among the three extracts, S. cumini demonstrated superior performance with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.47 ppm, significantly lower than A. comosus (1.16 ppm) and M. fragrans (2.51 ppm). To demonstrate practical utility, the AgNPs were immobilized onto cotton buds as a portable, “naked-eye” sensor, enabling on-site mercury detection without sophisticated instrumentation. These results suggest that green-synthesized AgNPs offer a sustainable and efficient platform for monitoring heavy metal contamination in aqueous environments.
This study was conducted in response to the increasing use of natural ingredients in topical formulations, particularly green tea extract (Camellia sinensis L.), which is known for its antioxidant activity and potential in skin care applications. The selection of an appropriate base, including the use of cera alba, plays an important role in determining the physical characteristics of the formulation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of variations in cera alba concentration on the physical characteristics of green tea extract ointment. The method involved preparing several ointment formulations with different concentrations of cera alba, followed by physical evaluations including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesion. The results showed that all formulations met the requirements for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, and adhesion, but did not meet the standard for spreadability. An increase in cera alba concentration tended to increase the viscosity of the formulation, resulting in decreased spreadability but improved adhesion. These findings indicate that cera alba plays a significant role in determining the physical characteristics of ointment formulations, and further optimization is needed to achieve an ideal formulation with balanced properties and potential for development as a natural-based topical product.
Abstract The blue swimming crab ( Portunus pelagicus ) is an economically important fishery resource in National Fisheries Management Area (WPPNRI) 712 of the Republic of Indonesia. Recent studies indicate declining stock conditions due to overexploitation and the use of non-selective fishing gear such as bottom trawls. This study conducted preliminary study on the potential use of crab pots as environmentally friendly fishing gear in the Java Sea, WPPNRI 712. A total of 300 crab pots were installed at six locations at depths of 13–16 m. Catch rates and target effectiveness were analyzed descriptively. The results showed a total catch of 112 individuals (15.08 kg), with blue swimming crabs accounting for 60.70%. The average catch rate was 0.50 ± 0.11 kg/location/100 pots. The dome crab pots demonstrated high effectiveness and operational stability on mud substrates. Although findings were limited by the small number of locations, this study highlights the potential of crab pots as an environmentally friendly fishing gear to support sustainable crab fisheries in WPPNRI 712. Broader observations and full-scale statistical analysis are needed to validate the spatial pattern of potential fishing ground.
