Abstract Mollisols of the Eurasian steppe belt are highly productive soils whose hydraulic functioning depends on aggregate hierarchy and management-induced structural dynamics. This study compared the hydro-structural properties of two pedogenic endmembers: the Chinese Isohumusol (monsoon-influenced) and the Ukrainian Chernozem (continental-influenced). Field experiments quantified aggregate size distribution, aggregate stability indices (Mean Weight Diameter, MWD; Geometric Mean Diameter, GMD), bulk density, and seasonal infiltration dynamics to evaluate hydro-structural resilience under contrasting tillage. The Isohumusol exhibited a coarse, depth-stratified architecture with a high proportion of very coarse > 10 mm aggregates and high surface stability under No-Till (MWD = 2.84), supporting peak initial infiltration rates (> 700 mm h⁻1). However, this structure was susceptible to seasonal densification with surface bulk density increasing by 16% from spring to summer and significant degradation under conventional tillage. In contrast, the Chernozem displayed a more homogeneous structure dominated by stable 2–10 mm aggregates, maintaining high stability across the profile (MWD up to 3.01). Its matrix-dominated pore system resulted in lower infiltration rates (< 600 mm h⁻1) but greater resistance to structural collapse, as reflected by a stable fractal dimension (D ≈ 2.47). Reduced tillage systems in the Chernozem increased subsoil bulk density (> 1.35 g cm⁻3), signaling compaction risks. These findings demonstrate that infiltration dynamics and structural stability are fundamentally governed by soil-specific pedogenic templates and seasonal abiotic drivers, necessitating regionally tailored conservation tillage strategies.
An approximate solution for the constrained variational problem describing the start-up mode of the tower crane slewing mechanism during steady load hoisting has been developed. The root mean square value of the slewing drive torque has been selected as optimization criterion. The drive torque, its rate of change, and the drive power have been constrained. A dynamic model describing the coupled motion of the hoisting and slewing mechanisms has been formulated in the form of a system of ordinary differential equations. The approximate solution to the optimization problem has been represented by two polynomial functions: the first one ensures the satisfaction of the prescribed boundary conditions of motion, while the second one minimizes the optimization criterion. A modified particle swarm optimization algorithm has been employed to determine the optimal solution. As a result, pendulum-type load oscillations as well as oscillations in the structural elements of the crane have been significantly reduced.
The aim of the work is to study the dynamic behavior of induction motors and estimate key electromechanical parameters using the SINDYc method in conditions where only the results of no-load and short-circuit tests and a dataset with reference data of various three-phase induction motors of the AIR series are available. To achieve this goal, general physics methods, three-dimensional modeling, processing and visualization of results in the Wolfram Mathematica program were used. The working hypothesis of the research is to investigate the possibilities of using SINDYc to estimate the dynamics of key electromechanical parameters of three-phase induction motors, subject to limited input data and the availability of reference data of various three-phase induction motors of the AIR series. The most important result is the combination of parameters obtained from experiments of no-load and short-circuit of a three-phase asynchronous motor with a dataset of characteristics of various motors of the corresponding series, and unknown quantities are found using the developed mathematical model and the use of calculation relations given in this work. The significance of the research results obtained in the work lies in the fact that based on the developed method, it is possible to analyze the dynamic behavior of asynchronous motors and evaluate the dynamics of key electromechanical parameters of an electric motor using the SINDYc method in conditions when only the results of no-load and short-circuit tests are available. The results of the analysis of the sparsity of the SINDYc model showed that in the studied range of threshold values, the accuracy on the test sample practically does not change, while the number of active terms in the equations changes moderately.
Surface and ladder fuels play a significant role in controlling fire behavior, and their estimation is critical for fire modeling and management. Although airborne laser scanning (ALS) provides cost-effective, spatially explicit data on forest 3D structure, its utility for surface fuel estimation remains uncertain due to canopy occlusion and the presence of tree trunk points. We assessed the impact of tree trunk point filtering (TPF) on model performance for estimating surface fuel loads in strata within a vertical gradient of 0.0–2.0 m, which includes litter, herbaceous, and shrub layers. We used high-density ALS data ( 2500 points m−2) from boreo-nemoral mixed forests in southern Sweden. We compared the performance of 438 LiDAR (lidar) metrics in characterizing surface fuels using parametric (linear and non-linear) and nonparametric (random forest — RF) regressions. There was no significant impact of TPF when comparing lidar-derived metric distributions and model performance under filter types, although a minor improvement was observed in the 0.5–2.0-m stratum. The performance of surface fuel strata modeling was the highest for the litter layer depth (R2 = 0.39) and moderate for the herbaceous layer and branch biomass (R2 = 0.26–0.28). The linear regression model consistently outperformed the RF model and showed slightly better performance than the nonlinear regression. We obtained a negligible positive impact of TPF (ΔR2 = 0.02) on predicting the litter layer depth utilizing the parametric regression approaches. Intensity-based metrics calculated using a minimum 5-m buffer radius were instrumental in modeling fuel layers within the 0.0–0.5-m stratum. Removing tree trunk points did not affect the representation of surface fuels in airborne lidar data. We suggest, however, that the correct classification of ground and no-ground points and detection of objects such as boulders and deadwood can have a major effect on the adequate prediction of surface fuels.
